Black Kids
Black Kids are a five piece popular rock and roll combo from Jacksonville, Florida. Owen Holmes plays bass guitar for them, a fellow called Kevin Snow drums his way through their songs, Dawn Watley and Ali Youngblood share keyboard duties, whilst Ali’s brother Reggie plays the guitar and sings, sings, sings. Note that his name is Reggie Youngblood, possibly one of the greatest rock and roll names in recent memory.
The band’s first recording was an EP of demos entitled Wizard of Ahhhs, released in August 2007. They gave it away for free via their MySpace page, thereby inadvertently setting that thing known as the ‘blogosphere’ alight and securing a career in music by being deemed worthy of a 8.4/10 review from Pitchfork (the official mark of ‘well good’).
Now managed by the same team behind Arcade Fire and Bjork and bigged up by everyone from the Rolling Stone to The New York Times, Black Kids release their debut single proper, I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You’, this very week. You might have seen them performing it on Later… With Jools Holland last week – the first time the show was ever broadcast live.
BLACKKIDSMUSIC.COM: Though it may at the minute indeed be simply little more than a link through to their MySpace page, occasionally the band have been known to give away things like completely cracking EPs for free via this official site. Worth the occasional check, then.
