DOWNLOAD NEW SINGLE 'CUT MY TEETH' FROM PEGGYWHO.COM!

The simple way to put it is to say that Peggy Sue are an indie rock group originally from Brighton, England, and they have a new album entitled Acrobats due out on September 12th. Band members Rosa Slade and Katy Young, backed by Olly Joyce on drums, have been honing their skills as a group for going on 3 years, and it’s been a joy to watch their music mature at such a rapid pace.

First release The Body Parts EP came out in 2008 and saw them garner gushing reviews for their - depending on who you read - similarities to Regina Spektor, PJ Harvey, The Moldy Peaches, Kate Nash or even, at a stretch Adele (pre smug A-list days). This was soon followed in late 2008 with The First Aid EP and later, in April 2010 by their well-received debut album Fossils and Other Phantoms (released on Wichita), with The Guardian describing how they “...combat melancholy with some startingly abrasive PJ Harvey-style guitars” and NME lauding their “...spooky, sexy, dark folk..” RockFeedback's Tom Hannan described their songs as “...having a grunge-like sensibility instilled with the edge and good humour of NYC anti-folk.”

Like a conciliatory two headed beast (who's ever so friendly once you get to know it) Rosa and Katy's voices play a warped game of call and response with each other, sometimes abrasive, sometimes soft but always entertaining - if at first overwhelming. Katy once stated: “If we’ve had a shit gig, we’ve always lost our voices the next day. We just go ‘fuck this’ and sing really loud; we’ll make noises and scream, getting aggressive as we can.” I think there you have a rough idea of their philosophy.

What's abundantly clear is their comfort in their own sound, something that comes across live as -  despite the virulence and anger present in their songs - their presence in the flesh is an ever engaging and friendly one, all smiles and self-effacing. This despite an emerging penchant for a bigger sound on record, displayed in the power of new single 'Cut My Teeth', akin to the Screaming Females, but without the bombast. Singing together more than they do apart, this affecting clash gives this strange beast a unique beauty.

A Twitter account talks excitably of finishing degrees, TV documentaries, Kimya Dawson and early forays into the live circuit – they are clearly passionate about storytelling, with an array of unique songs showcasing an honest view on life, love, comic book heroes and regret. A quick glance of live reviews across the web will attest to their warm, likeable and childlike stage presence, charming with one hand and demanding reparations with the other.

Describing their label Wichita, home to Best Coast, Sky Larkin, Bloc Party and Les Savy Fav amongst others, the girls refer to “...one of our favourite labels and the perfect home for us.” Acrobats sees their second full length release with the imprint in the space of two and a half years.

Excerpts from the new LP suggest their acoustic guitars are getting dusty in a cupboard somewhere, as a scrubbed up version of their earlier anti-folk is backed by propulsive and virulent drumming, electric guitar jangling away in cyclical style as they talk yet again, of a guy giving “..nothing he didn't want back.” Talk of Shellac-inspired songs on this LP provides yet another surprise reference point from which they travel from, but never rest upon. They do their best to hide this darker side to their persona in presentation and style, but it's this collision with their outer-selves that makes Peggy Sue quite the exciting prospect that they are.
