The Music

Like many classic acts before them, The Music formed out of boredom. After all, their location up in Leeds, north of the UK, certainly didn’t herald a hive of activity, so much as a yearning urge developing for singer/guitarist Rob Harvey, guitarist Adam Nutter, bassist Stuart Coleman, and drummer Phil Jordon to join forces with one another and create their own musical-entity.

Upon finding a unique chemistry amidst each other very early on, it didn’t take much time before the foursome’s sound evolved: a towering cacophony of whirling guitars, dynamic bass and drums structures, topped off with Harvey’s own unique, high-pitched vocal-howl... Admittedly, too, the fact that this was all conjured up from the innocent-seeming heads of just four teenagers is further testament to the act’s skill and ability.

Following rapturous live-performances, interest soon took to its natural progression. Legendary UK indie-label, Fierce Panda, released the band’s limited-edition debut-single, ‘Take The Long Road & Walk it’ to an immense press-reception. Its 1,000 copies’ stock sold out in just a couple of days. With a label-deal soon emerging with Hut Recordings – yes, those behind the Pumpkins, The Verve, et al – not only did more recording become underway, but so did tours with the not-so-mere likes of Oasis, Doves, The Vines, New Order and The Charlatans, along with the release of their second body of work, the ‘You Might As Well Try To F**k Me’ EP of 2001.

But, amidst a trip to Japan and sell-out gigs all over the place, it was time for the group to work on their first ever LP. Teaming up with producer Jim Abiss – of DJ Shadow and Bjork notoriety – the resulting ten tracks recorded, and soon on offer in stores around the world, make for a spiralling world of hypnotic hooks, entrancing atmospherics and head-grindingly tender, strong melodies... With its release-date looming, and press-attention soaring higher than ever before, The Music are set to shine. Yet, unlike many of their overnight-success contemporaries, they’re going to do this within graceful endurance for not just 2002 – but beyond as well. Stick with ‘em.
