Void of the denial and pretension of many of their contemporaries – many of whom kid themselves of their own self-righteousness, in spite of obvious outside influences – Denmark’s The Raveonettes are openly ‘a tribute to the great music’ that has preceded them.

Call it ‘drone’, emblazon it ‘retro’, or just simply shy away and dub it ‘rock ‘n’ roll’ – whatever, Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo’s trade is anything but ‘mediocre’. Demoing the material of their statement-of-intent debut LP, ‘Whip It On’, solely on four-track, the record was even subjected to four key rules:

1) All the songs would be recalled in the same key – Bb minor;

2) No more than three chords were allowed;

3) Each song had to be under three minutes long;

4) No high hat or ride cymbals were allowed in recording the album.

The record, resultantly, was a lo-fi, high-energy success – further brought to life with additional, live-members: guitarist Manoj Ramdas and jazz-drummer Jakob Hoyer. Such performances prompt ed an A&R uproar at the unsigned In The City Conference in 2002 from eager record-labels; Columbia is their home now, and with an impending new record-release, featuring yet more the above, unique formula, it seems as if the pair’s impending dance with alternative-notoriety is only set to heighten in a not-so-significant time-spell.
