Three-part harmonies, a non-consensus on fashion, edgy, throttling guitars – and nagging songs as ragged as they are ingenuously textured and captivatingly melodic.
Stellastarr* then – aka, vocalist/guitarist Shawn, guitarist Michael, drummer/keyboardist Arthur, and bassist Amanda – are something a bit special. From New York – yet not a part of NYC in any suffocating, pseudo-‘scene’ kinda way – the quartet first arose to interest following shows with the likes of the late Joe Strummer and The Strokes, and after performing a now-legendary set at the Tiswas club-night at Don Hill’s, NY, the band were enough to convince the evening’s promoters and producer Tim Reid that there was plenty on display to warrant a potentially remarkable series of future recordings.
Correct. We fast-forward to a signing with major-label RCA, a slaying of the UK – inclusive of a sold-out, debut-tour in 2003, a top-40 single with their debut-release (‘Somewhere Across Forever’) – and raved-about summer-festival appearances. With the eponymous debut-album hitting stores this fall/autumn, now the proof is on-show to the wider masses as to the intrinsic charm and haphazard wizardry of indie’s finest new export.
