BIOGRAPHY

In 2008, LA-born Bethany Cosentino moved to New York to study Creative Writing, but ended up homesick and crying listening to ‘California Dreaming’.  A lot.  Consequently, she returned home and wrote lots of lovely beach music.

Cosentino now plays in the band Best Coast with former Vivian Girls drummer Ali Koehler, and a bloke who used to babysit for her (apparently) who goes by the name of Bobb Bruno.  Not sure just how much we believe Beth, as she told the NME that she met Bruno at a party where a girl jumped out of a window.  But she’s definitely listened to ‘California Dreaming’ a fair few times.

Lots of people say that Best Coast’s music is all innocent and reminiscent of ‘50s-‘60s girl group pop.  But what makes it so relevant is that their music is totally drenched in that dreamy shoe gaze sound that rose to infamy last year.  In that specific field, they’re miles ahead of the chasing pack.

Right now, Beth is playing live (with an intention to pop back to the UK later this year) and busy being loved up with her cat and the fella from Wavves.  If like a lot of people, you’d quite like to be her, go to the guitar centre in Pasadena LA where she hangs out sometimes.  Or buy a Fender Mustang.  Or on a smaller budget, cut yourself a blunt fringe with your kitchen scissors.  Or accept that you’ll never be as cool as Bethany Cosentino.  What am I talking about, this isn’t Nylon magazine…

Watch out for Bronya Francis’ interview feature with Best Coast, running on Rockfeedback later this week.
