Turin Brakes

At the start of 2001, few could have guessed quite the reaction that Turin Brakes’ arrival would mark. Humbly, January of the year saw one limited-edition single released to overly-positive reactions from radio and press alike, and its enabling of two further ensuing EPs to spread the word even more-so soon generated the band with high-profile support-shows.

Yet Olly and Gale’s quietly commanding, largely-acoustic song-writing couldn’t remain outside of the mainstream for too much longer. Fittingly, by the end of 2001, two top-40 singles had been obtained – ‘Underdog (Save Me)’ and ‘Mind Over Money’ – not to mention the release of an album, ‘The Optimist LP’, which resulted in the band selling out three huge London shows, and nominations from The Brits, Q Awards and Mercury Music Prize for their artistic-achievements.

With almost quarter of a million copies sold of the record globally, the pair didn’t waste time setting to work on the follow-up; indeed, the second-LP is already due out at the start of 2003, as produced by Tony Hoffer of Supergrass, Beck and Air fame. Now, thanks to an additional, latest UK jaunt – including further capacity live-appearances – not only do new songs promise even bolder and sumptuous arrangements, but the opportunity for the band to rise even higher than ever before. Justifiably, too.
