Future of the Left

Future of the Left were born out of not giving a shit. Two (perhaps only two) great bands existed in Cardiff, Wales – Mclusky, and Jarcrew. A few kids – we adored giving 5/5 reviews to the boys at every opportunity – loved them. But the world at large was not set alight. As such, the world at large lost two bands who could have changed everything. In their collapse, Future of the Left were born – a band who might yet still change everything themselves.

They are guitarist and frontman Andy Falkous, drummer Jack Egglestone (both ex-Mclusky) and bassists Kelson Mathias (he of Jarcrew), and they’ve been playing together since 2005. Signed to Too Pure records, where Mclusky had housed all their recorded output, their first gig was at the legendary Clwb Ifor Bach in Cardiff on July 2nd 2006 under a pseudonym so as not to attract solely fans of their previous bands.

Their debut single, ‘Fingers Become Thumbs / The Lord Hates a Coward’ was released in just January of this year in a limited edition vinyl style, and was followed by ‘adeadenemyalwayssmellsgood’ and ‘Small Bones, Small Bodies’ before the release of their debut album ‘Curses’ this month. It sees the band even take occasional moves towards the synthesiser on a number of songs, a brave step for the fiercely guitar based bunch, but a gamble which has paid of brilliantly. You can f**king dance to this record.

FUTUREOFTHELEFT.COM: The band’s stylish monochrome official home.

MYSPACE.COM/FUTUREOFTHELEFT: The usual songs, pics, and stuff you’d expect – except that Andy Falkous personally writes a pretty funny blog you’d do well to subscribe to.

TOOPURE.COM/FUTUREOFTHELEFT: The band’s label describe their act as “a direct response to market research which suggested that the perfect unsuccesful and ignored rock band could be created by melding together the remains of two largely unsuccessful and ignored rock bands”.

FINGERS BECOME THUMBS / THE LORD HATES A COWARD: The group’s debut is characteristically horrid, in a wonderful, wonderful way.

ADEADENEMYALWAYSSMELLSGOOD: A 5/5 review for FOTL’s second ever single.

LIVE @ 100 CLUB, LONDON, JAN ‘07: A ‘downright fun’ evening.
