Neon Neon

Born as a collaborative project between the Super Furies’ Gruff Rhys and LA producer/artist Boom Bip, Neon Neon released their debut album in March this year - Stainless Style – a loose concept album based around the eventful life of playboy car designer and DeLorean Motor Company founder John DeLorean.

The band make unabashed synth-based electro-pop, and have now become something of a collective. The album and live show features collaborations with the likes of Carte Le Bon, Har Mar Superstar, Yo Majesty, Spank Rock, the Magic Numbers and Fab Morietti of The Strokes. The band have noted that they essentially made a mid-\'80s synth-pop record but have also iterated that the aim was still to make (in Boom Bip’s words) “a new version of something familiar”.

Neon Neon’s recent Mercury nomination and a string of highly praised festival appearances this summer (including an incendiary sun soaked set we caught at Germany’s MELT! event, soon to be documented on Rockfeedback TV) have led to the band getting a huge increase in attention. It seems fair to say that this little side project could easily progress into a somewhat more serious and multi-album making machine. We certainly hope that’s the case.

MYSPACE.COM/NEONX2: Pretty full of stuff for a MySpace page. Five great tracks by the band on the player, plus different re-mixes by Boom Bip that he’s done for the likes of Pitchfork and Rolling Stones are available to stream, and there are loads of video clips to play, including an interview with the devilish duo themselves.

NEON NEON ON LAST.FM: Check out that Mercury Prize nominee shit right here. Apparently Hercules & Love Affair, Super Furry Animals, Gruff Rhys, Glass Candy, White Williams, Chromatics, The Whip are “similar artists”, just in case you were wondering what kind of trouble you were about to get yourself in to.

NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED FOR MERCURY MUSIC PRIZE: We tell you how we reckons Neon Neon’s a good choice for the Mercury prize right here.

I LUST U (FEAT CATE LE BON): Video clip for what is definitely one of the singles of the year: ‘I Lust You’ featuring lovely Welsh singer/songwriter Cate Le Bon.
