Described by Pitchfork as ‘one of the most innovative voices in British music’, Anna Meredith is a genre-crossing composer and producer whose work straddles the worlds of contemporary classical, art pop, electronica and experimental rock. She was awarded an MBE for services to music in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
After building an established career in the classical world and releasing two critically acclaimed EPs, she released her much-anticipated debut album, Varmints, on Moshi Moshi Records in 2016. The critical response saw 4 and 5 star reviews across the board from the likes of Wire, Sunday Times, Uncut, Q Magazine, The Line of Best Fit, DIY and the coveted Best New Music on Pitchfork. As well as being Loud & Quiet’s Album of the Year, Varmints also won the 2016 Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) Award. In 2019 she released the Mercury Prize nominated follow-up – FIBS – to critical acclaim once again, being named Electronic Sound’s Album of the Year, featuring in Pitchfork’s Best Experimental Albums of 2019 and the New York Times, alongside many other End of Year lists including Loud & Quiet, Paste, Stereogum and receiving 4 star reviews across the board.
Since forming in the din of a house party two years ago, PVA are the genre-hopping passion project of London musicians Ella Harris, Josh Baxter, and Louis Satchell. The three-piece traverse fistfuls of genres throughout rapturous live sets, incorporating techno landscapes, Balearic euphoria, and industrial miasma within the same songs. The band’s unique energy combines with blocky synths, deadpan vocals, and motorik drum loops to earmark the group as one of the capital’s foremost new bands. The band signed to Speedy Wunderground to do one of their prestigious sessions, (following the path of Black Midi, Squid, and Black Country, New Road amongst others) selling out 250 records before any could ship and have been widely praised and played heavily on BBC Radio 6 and KEXP, with Divine Intervention being described as ‘Patti Smith fronting Factory Floor’, (Pierre Hall) with ‘that sweet LCD Soundsystem energy … God, it’s good’ (The Guardian). The track has racked up nearly 90,000 plays on Spotify within the space of a couple of months.
With a hefty list of festivals and support slots including Baxter Dury, Franc Moody, HMLTD, The Orielles and Squid, the band have quickly become the most exciting band of 2020. After playing showcases at Austin’s SXSW, they will be heading to Japan to play shows in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.
Meddling together elements of punk-infused dancehall, jungle, bass and pop, Grove is an autodidactic Bristol-based producer and vocalist whose sound is undefined and constantly morphing. Grove’s noise concoctions come from the ‘feminine’ and ‘masculine’ energies that reside within, filtering them through a sensuous & rave-a-licious sound. Lyrical subject matters range from the euphoria of queer rave spaces, to the toppling of the Edward Colston statue.
