COURTNEY BARNETT

In the hands of Courtney Barnett, fragments of everyday life become rich and riveting. A deft lyricist and virtuosic guitarist, she is an emblem of millennial wit and one of Australia’s most successful musical exports.

CATE LE BON

The past few years have seen Le Bon emerge as a much lauded and sought-after collaborator,  producing albums for contemporaries such as Deerhunter (Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared?), John Grant (Boy from Michigan), and forthcoming albums from both Devendra Banhart and H. Hawkline. She’s not so much a gun for hire as a multi-faceted artist and producer who can both steer the ship and tap into a collective mindset; in 2019, she joined John Cale for a three-night live stretch in Paris, and 2021 will see a bass appearance on the track "If I Don't Hear from You Tonight" from Courtney Barnett's Things Take Time, Take Time. As Bradford Cox aptly notes about Le Bon, "there are artists who look inwards or outwards, and then there are the very rare ones who transcend either location."

DEHD

The rapturous reception of 2020’s Flower of Devotion gave Dehd access to more resources — budgets, studios, producers. Rather than seek something new however, they invested in themselves, their process, and their deep belief in what they have always done. They booked the same studio where they recorded Flower of Devotion but tripled their stay, giving themselves time to play with arrangements and delight in a wonderland of drum machines and synthesizers. While continuing to write and record every part of the album themselves, the new relationship with Fat Possum did allow for a few indulgences, namely in the addition of Grammy winning mixing engineer, Craig Silvey (The Rolling Stones, The National, Arcade Fire), and mastering engineer, Heba Kadry (Slowdive, Bjork, Cate Le Bon), ensuring Dehd’s vision for “Blue Skies”. The result is the band’s second consecutive breakthrough: sharper and smarter, with harmonies and rhythms more sophisticated and considered. Blue Skies is still Dehd – just more wild and wonderful than ever before. Another jolt of timely hope, only with twice the power.

BIG JOANIE

Big Joanie are a Black feminist punk band whose passionate live shows and punk rock ethos have led to them becoming one of the most talked about bands on the UK live scene.

LEA SEN

Open-eared and open-hearted: these are the watchwords of Léa Sen’s music. At just 22 years old, the London-based singer, songwriter and producer has established herself as one of the capital’s most in-demand talents, meandering between gossamer vocal features for Joy Orbison to solo work that references everything from Bon Iver’s electronic timbre and folk guitars to Sampha’s impressionistic lyricism.

FAKE FRUIT

In 2013, 18 year old musician/songwriter Hannah D’Amato fled her Southern California suburban home. Disillusioned by the ubiquitous garage and psych rock casualties that polluted her local music scene and a healthy teenage desire to flee the nest, D’Amato set her sights on New York City.

GRETEL HANLYN

Gretel Hänlyn is a 20 year old singer, songwriter & guitarist from West London. Having been raised on a diet of Nick Cave it was no surprise that Gretel picked up a guitar & started writing her own gothic stories and songs at age 11. As she grew as a musician, started going to gigs & fell in love with Tim Buckley, Nirvana and then Wolf Alice, her songwriting began to morph into what it is today; a mix of hi-fi grunge, goth-pop and alt/indie ballads.

FAYE WEBSTER

Faye Webster loves the feeling of a first take: writing a song, then heading to the studio with her band to track it live the very next day. When you listen to the 23-year-old Atlanta songwriter’s poised and plainspoken albums, you can hear why: she channels emotions that are so aching, they seem to be coming into existence at that very moment. Webster captures the spark before it has a chance to fade; she inks lyrics before they have a chance to seem fleeting. Her signature sound pairs close, whisper-quiet, home-recorded vocals with the unmistakable sound of musicians together in a room.

MICHELLE

Born-and-bred New Yorkers, MICHELLE formed in 2018 around their celebrated debut album HEATWAVE. The band is comprised of Sofia D'Angelo, Julian Kaufman, Charlie Kilgore, Layla Ku, Emma Lee and Jamee Lockard. On their forthcoming record, the predominantly POC and queer collective are closer than ever before as they continue to mix and match the writing and production groups amongst the six of them. Jamee notes, “We've learned how to maximize everyone's strengths by listening to each other."

INJURY RESERVE

Injury Reserve was originally a trio, consisting of rappers Ritchie With a T and Stepa J. Groggs and producer Parker Corey. Their mixtapes Live From The Dentist (released in 2015) and Floss (2016) earned them underground buzz, and they capitalized on the attention with their debut album in 2019, the eponymous Injury Reserve.

The group’s momentum was put on hold when in June of 2020 Groggs tragically passed away. By the Time I Get to Phoenix was largely completed ahead of Groggs’ passing with his contributions, and will be the first Injury Reserve music to be released since their eponymous debut album. Ritchie and Corey took the past year to complete the record, and the title has meaning past simply referencing Injury Reserve’s hometown. It’s an homage to a song that has been covered countless times, which is in line with Injury Reserve’s ethos and approach when it comes to creating music. The group pulls from several styles and eras of hip hop, but runs each one through the Injury Reserve lens, putting their own distinct and cohesive sound across their references. Nowhere is that dynamic more present than on By the Time I Get to Phoenix.

BILLY WOODS

Billy Woods is a rapper who defies easy categorization; he claims Washington D.C. as his hometown but has spent much of his life in New York City. He was born in the U.S. but spent much of his childhood in Africa and the West Indies, the second child of a Jamaican intellectual and a would-be Marxist revolutionary. On the mic, woods is no less of a conundrum, possessed of versatile flows and an ability to not only tackle topics other artists wouldn’t dream of, but also to bring unique perspectives to the familiar ones.

THEY HATE CHANGE

Dre and Vonne first came together in front of the apartment complex where they both lived as teens. Dre (he/him) had just moved down from Rochester, NY; Vonne (they/them) was trying to sell him bad weed. It was clear from the start that the two listened to music differently from most people—they’re sonic omnivores, obsessive deep-divers, lovers of rare and radical sounds. Starting as kids trawling the internet for tracks, they’ve been collecting music from around the world and across the decades, amassing a shared sonic knowledge so deep that “encyclopedic” barely begins to cover it—not just the East Coast hip-hop that Dre grew up on, or the hyperlocal bass-music variants like jook (the Gulf Coast’s twerkably raunchy answer to house) and crank (think “Miami bass meets NOLA bounce”) that Vonne grew up on, but also drum ‘n’ bass, Chicago footwork, post-punk, prog, grime, krautrock, emo, and basically any genre on the map.

NUKULUK

Nukuluk is an experimental hip-hop / electronica collective based in South London. Their chaotic sound draws off a series of eureka moments during studio play, a broad church of influence and a symbiotic relationship within the group. Alien field recordings, warped bass drones and clattering percussion create otherworldly production landscapes, stages on which vocalists Syd and Monika can battle it out.

GEORGE CLANTON

George Clanton doesn’t just produce gleaming electronic pop, he produces nostalgia too. Beyond hunting for the right melodies and textures, the Los Angeles artist is always searching for a sound that strikes a spiritual chord. In addition to making music, he runs the 100% Electronica record label with his fellow pop mutator and wife Neggy Gemmy. He also spearheads events, including weekly streams on Twitch. Under the monikers ESPRIT and Mirror Kisses, Clanton was a key figure of the early vaporwave scene. But beginning In 2015, he started working under his given name, starting over with an album that shared the same name as his freshly launched label. His 2018 follow-up, Slide, further revealed Clanton’s gift for deeply moving pop and now he’s focused on delivering a powerful sequel. The new album finds him both musically and personally matured. It’s an elegant merging of all his past selves—of stirring rock, sweeping shoegaze, and niche electronics—augmented with more complex layers and physical instruments. It’s also a journey inward as Clanton emphasizes personal reflection and self-improvement—themes he’s held close his whole career.

DEATHS DYNAMIC SHROUD

death's dynamic shroud have always been curious about what we can't see. Tech Honors, James Webster, and Keith Rankin make music that explores that sense of wonderment—emotional, experimental electronic work that fills gaps between the known and unknown. Full of richly textured layers of sound, songs like new single “Judgment Bolt” draw unsuspecting listeners into a place that’s simultaneously murky and neon, somber and playful. You feel a sense of new adventure, with a curious pang of déjà vu.

NEGGY GEMMY

Neggy Gemmy’s (FKA Negative Gemini) heartfelt electronic pop is built around duality. The Los Angeles-based producer, singer, and songwriter, born Lindsey French is constantly shapeshifting as her interests and surroundings change: no two releases are quite alike. The breadth of her palette and the emotion in her storytelling is evident in her upcoming third album—especially in the vulnerable, reflective opener “California.” Making art that honestly reveals emotions, and provokes the same in listeners has long been the goal of her work, even outside of creating music. French runs the 100% Electronica label with artist and husband George Clanton, hosts a weekly VR livestream on Twitch, and does her own graphic design. After growing up moving around the US, French first found a musical home in Brooklyn’s underground electronic scene, and that energy echoes through the sweaty club beats of her 2016 album, Body Work. Her next EP, Bad Baby, shifted toward a lo-fi indie rock sound. These releases proved she’s a keen student of whatever genre she touches, no matter how niche. Recently, seeking another fresh start, French relocated to L.A. Ultimately, though, she makes a home where she always has: in her music.

LIL SILVA

Lil Silva cut his teeth in his hometown Bedford grime scene as an affiliate of Macabre Unit, where equally fierce competition and camaraderie pushed producers to find their own sound in order to stand out. Slapping a beat tag on your instrumentals was, in many ways, cheating: fans should know it’s your record simply by the sound of the synths, snares, and structures deployed. For Lil Silva, there was no reason why the grime scene wouldn’t have its own Pharell, or Timbaland, or J Dilla. Even as he stepped sideways away from grime, that belief and ambition never left him. The anthem status of his late-noughties UK funky cuts ‘Seasons’ and ‘Pulse vs. Flex’ was as immediate as it has been enduring. Some songs are timeless; others will always feel like they’re coming from the future. This is, Lil Silva has discovered, his sonic trademark. The addition of his voice to his songs has only compounded this quality.

IVY SOLE

Ivy Sole (she/they) does not fit neatly into any one box—that uniqueness is their superpower. The 28-year old rapper-singer is a rare hybrid of sultry and soulful R&B paired with undeniable hip-hop lyricism. As a Charlotte, NC native and Brooklyn resident, Ivy’s sound draws on a diverse set of influences including southern rap, gospel, spoken-word poetry, boom bap and more.

JESHI

Jeshi’s journey to making Universal Credit, his open-hearted and heavy-hitting debut album, began with a desire to take his music further, to say something he’d not yet said on EPs like 2020’s BAD TASTE or The Worlds Spinning Too Fast. He’d been making music his entire life but felt like he was coming up against the edges of what he had set out to do. There was only one answer; push and keep on pushing. The result is an album that acts as a radial act of empathy; looking out across society and attempting to bridge the divide between rich and poor. Universal Credit is an album that gifts humanity back to the demonised and lays bare the truth behind the prejudice; that nobody is immune from poverty or hardship and that luck plays a major role in everybody’s fate.

DESIRE

Desire is an electronic band formed in Montreal & currently based in Palm Springs. They make synth pop where film, fashion, & fantasy collide on the dancefloor. On stage, vocalist Megan Louise theatrically pivots between French & English while draped in latex from head to toe. From vixen to villain, she turns to predator with blood pumping thrill. Carrying the campy torch of Vaudeville into this century she is joined by composer Johnny Jewel (ChromaVcs, Glass Candy, Twin Peaks) on piano & drum machine.

CLUB INTL.

Club Intl is a NYC based collective, led by musician John Eatherly (Public Access T.V. , The Virgins, be your own PET). Produced by Johnny Jewel (Chromatics, Glass Candy) - and signed to his iconic label, Italians Do It Better, the project came to fruition when Eatherly's East Village basement studio, had a nightclub built directly on top of it. "All of a sudden there was this nightclub above our clubhouse." Eatherly explains. "The energy from upstairs & seeing hundreds of kids just wilding out every night, started seeping into what we were working on downstairs." Eatherly and friends channeled this energy into a new band called, "Club Intl". The band released their debut single "Crush" in May 2020 to critical acclaim from Pitchfork, The Guardian, Fader, and more... In February 2021, the group partnered with Andrew VanWyngarden (MGMT) for a mix of their latest single "Never Be The Same".

KEVIN MORBY

The story begins with Kevin Morby absentmindedly flipping through a box of old family photos in the basement of his childhood home in Kansas City. Just hours before at a family dinner, his father had collapsed in front of him and had to be rushed to the hospital. That night Morby still felt the shock and fear lodged in his bones. He gazed at the images until one of the pictures jumped out at him: his father as a young man, proud and strong and filled with confidence, posing on a lawn with his shirt off. While his father regained his strength, Morby meditated on ideas of fear, anxiety, hope and resilience all churning together. And then, he headed to Memphis. He moved into the Peabody Hotel and spent his days paying tribute and genuflecting to the dreamers he admired. In the evening, he would return to his room and document his ideas on a makeshift recording set-up, with just his guitar and a microphone. The songs, elegiac in nature, befitting all he had seen, poured out of him. This Is A Photograph features contributions from longtime staples of Morby’s live band, as well as old friends and new collaborators. If Oh My God saw Morby getting celestial and in constant motion and Sundowner was a study in localized intent, This Is A Photograph finds Morby making an Americana paean, a visceral life and death, blood on the canvas outpouring. As Morby reminds us early on, time is undefeated. So what do we do while we’re still here? This is a photograph of that sense of yearning.

THE SOFT MOON

The one-man project of the Soft Moon gives the darkly hypnotic sounds of Suicide, Joy Divison, Bauhaus, and Krautrock new life with a stripped-down approach. Vasquez is also inspired by his Afro-Cuban heritage and the wide-open spaces of the Mojave Desert where he was raised. While working in San Francisco,Vasquez released his first single, Breathe the Fire, on Captured Tracks in March 2010. That September, Parallels followed, and the Soft Moon's self-titled debut album appeared in November. Darker still was the Total Decay EP, which arrived in late October 2011. Vasqeuz continued to write songs while on the road, and enlisted the help of engineer/producer Monte Vallier to turn them into the streamlined tracks that appeared on 2012's Zeros. After touring in support of the album, Vasquez moved to Venice, Italy, using the solitude and his status as a foreigner as inspiration for a set of songs that explored despair and healing. Working with producer Maurizio Baggio at Hate Studios, Vasquez honed his singing and songwriting to produce 2015's Deeper, the Soft Moon's most emotional album yet. A pair of remix EPs featuring work by Ancient Methods, Trentemoller, Blush Response and arrived early the following year. For the Soft Moon's third album, Criminal, Vasquez reunited with Baggio and built on the confessional territory of Deeper as he explored his abusive childhood and its aftermath.

COCO

"Just as releasing music anonymously felt natural in 2020, it now feels natural to share ourselves and delight in the connection we make with our listeners."

In 2019, Maia Friedman (of Dirty Projectors, Uni Ika Ai), Dan Molad (of Lucius, Chimney), and Oliver Hill (of Pavo Pavo, Dustrider) came together on an afternoon in Los Angeles. Old friends with rich history—Maia and Oliver had toured together more than once; Dan had produced music for their respective projects—the trio convened with ambiguous artistic intention, easy chemistry, and open expectations. Before the sun had set, Coco had a name and two fully formed songs.

WESTERMAN

“I wanted to make something that was eventually uplifting” says Will Westerman about the origins of his debut album Your Hero Is Not Dead. “I wanted to say in as unguarded terms as I could — there are reasons for hope.” This vision, fully realized, is an album about empathy and compassion, struggle and release, and all the ways we contradict and battle within ourselves.

Your Hero Is Not Dead is full of supremely crafted songs about moral, political, and ethical grey areas. Recorded alongside his close friend and producer Nathan Jenkins (aka Bullion), they find Westerman attempting to resolve external issues by looking inward. Like a young Peter Gabriel in a late-capitalist world, Westerman’s music falls somewhere between artful soft rock and confessional electronic pop.

I LIKE TRAINS

Through their re-telling of some of western history’s most idiosyncratically bleak tales of human interest, to their realisation of humanity lying prostrate at the hands of environmental and technological factors far greater than us, I LIKE TRAINS have been transfixed by the art of survival. A group who stood apart from the crowd even as their adopted home of Leeds enjoyed its hype boom and bust years during the mid-noughties. Under the microscope of the wider media during its ‘New Yorkshire’ era, they have never really been fashionable: too surly, too bleak, too stubborn to follow the pre-meditated narrative placed on them by their critics and peers. They have not cared for escapism even as they voyage through an age of it; their albums have confronted head-on fears that most people choose to switch off, turn over and click away from, prolonging and intensifying reality’s inevitable impact.

CASS MCCOMBS

Maybe a minute passed before I knew I’d be singing “Karaoke” for the rest of my life. The second song on Heartmind, the tenth album by Cass McCombs, “Karaoke” is a god-level burst of power-pop perfection, as fetching as anything Cass has ever cut. The springy staccato guitar, the vaporized electric keys, the melody seemingly born for singing or clapping or dancing along: Cass triangulates a perch of his very own out among The Go-Betweens, The dB’s, and The Cure, and vibrates there, a beacon. And then, of course, there is the song’s playful if painful lyrical conceit—the lover who is making all the sacred motions of commitment but whose feelings may be no more deep or real than someone simply reading the lyrics for “Vision of Love” or “Stand by Your Man” from some crowded bar’s TV screen.

So after harmonizing alone with “Karaoke” for the twentieth time during a solo cross-country drive, I had to ask Cass for myself how it all went down: Was this heartbreak, or was it legit love? He paused, thought, then laughed. “Well, that’s the question,” he said slowly. “Neither?” Or maybe, he finally averred, both? That is—to me, anyway—the true joy of Heartmind, an eight-song album that feels more like a journey among assorted tuneful feelings, somehow shaped to meet whatever it is a particular listener needs, to mirror whatever they bring to these uniformly incandescent and tragicomic tracks. Cass has set the stage, but you get to pick the heroes and villains, the winners and losers, the jokes and the drags. He doesn’t want to give you the questions, let alone the answers.

To wit: Did the soldier at the center of the aching country epic “Unproud Warrior” abdicate responsibility or finally claim it? As the percussion shuffles and horns sigh beneath “Krakatau,” will you agree that you can be cleansed without being killed—or be anything better than you already are while still remaining yourself? Do you identify with being enraptured by music for so long that it ultimately drained you, too, as Cass suggests (maybe?) during the wiry opener, “Music Is Blue”? These are just a few of the questions that come to mind when I hear Heartmind, but I don’t even know if they’re the right questions. Still, I can now sing along to every word.

MURKAGE DAVE

Murkage Dave’s debut, ‘Murkage Dave Changed My Life’, is a record that broke new ground in both British Pop and Black British identity. His second studio release ‘The City Needs A Hero’ is set to reach new heights with Dave exploring socio-political, romantic & introspective themes, further affirming his modern-day poet status.

“For his sophomore solo outing, he adds even more ingredients into the mix, invoking soul, house and indie pop resulting in what is without a doubt his best album yet.”
9/10, The Line Of Best Fit

“With ‘The City Needs A Hero’, east-Londoner Murkage Dave’s observant tales of conflicted times widen their scope. Candid and forlorn, The City Needs A Hero captures the 2022 milieu.” Rolling Stone

Murkage Dave has collaborated with Mike Skinner, Jaykae, Skepta and Parisian producer Hologram Lo, US “Night Bass” originator AC Slater and french rapper Nekfeu. While working on his new album, he’s had the honour of working with a diverse range of talent including trip-hop pioneer Tricky, alt-pop icon Caroline Polachek and LA rap veteran Evidence.

It’s no surprise that his defiantly British sound - a pop blend that’s rooted in a youth spent listening to UK Garage and R&B, but also revealing formative years in Manchester absorbing The Smiths and Joy Division - is attracting fans globally.
Pre-pandemic his ‘Keep Up The Bad Work Tour’ sold out in many cities, including Manchester’s YES and London’s Studio 9294. He’s also toured as a support act for The Streets, playing 25 shows across the UK and Europe, as well as warming up for indie-rock band Peace and Tricky on their respective tours. At the end of 2019, he joined forces with friend and grime veteran Manga Saint Hilare for ‘We Need To Look After Us’ a collaborative album and sold out live show.

The Leytonstone born musician has received support and attention from the likes of; Pharrell Williams, Young Fathers, Iggy Pop, Romesh Ranganathan and Beastie Boys member Mike D, all of which have supported his music on their radio shows. He’s also been supported at BBC Radio 1 by the likes of Clara Amfo, Sian Eleri, Jack Saunders, DJ Target, Jamz Supernova, Annie Mac, and Toddla T. As well as receiving press coverage from Pitchfork, The Fader, Wonderland, Rolling Stone, The Times, The Line Of Best Fit, Complex, The Face, Evening Standard, The Guardian, Highsnobiety, Noisey, Mixmag, Clash, Dummy, Hunger, Trench Mag and many more.

BILLY NOMATES

A beacon of brutal truth in an industry built on inconsequential bullshit, the Bristol-based singer- songwriter gives voice to the silenced, the disillusioned, the broken-hearted, and the burnt-out, assembling brilliantly biting dispatches from the fringes of a society mired in austerity, inequality and insularity. Or, as Maries puts it, with trademark bluntness, “There's too much music in the world already, so everything I make has to count.”

“Make everything count” might just as well serve as Maries’ creative mantra. From the impactful imagery powering her soulful and bleakly humorous post-punk, to the economy of sound she achieves with her defiantly DIY set-up, there’s not a superfluous detail in the entirety of Maries’ output as Billy Nomates so far. It’s this very combination of authenticity and searing insight that made 2020’s self-titled debut such a revelation, winning Maries admirers including Iggy Pop, Geoff Barrow, Sleaford Mods and Steve Albini. And as she moves now onto album number two, Maries is more focused on her mission as ever, not least because the path to this point has been nothing short of torrid.

ALICE PHOEBE LOU

Alice Matthew (aka Alice Phoebe Lou) is a South African singer/songwriter with a distinctive voice and a style that combines ethereal bedroom pop with elements of folk, synth pop, jazz, and blues. Emerging in 2014, Lou has issued a handful of EPs and four full-length efforts (Orbit (2016), Paper Castles (2019), Glow (2021), and Child's Play (2021). "She," a track she contributed to the 2017 documentary Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story, was included on the Oscars' shortlist for Best Original Song.

The daughter of a pair of documentary filmmakers, Lou was born and raised in the small Cape Peninsula town of Kommetjie. A multi-instrumentalist by the age of fourteen, she spent her formative years as a street musician in Europe, honing her skills for passerby in Berlin, where she would eventually move. Lou self-released her debut EP, Momentum, independently in 2014. Two years later, she issued her first long-player, Orbit, which earned accolades in the German press and elicited praise back home in South Africa. The following year saw the release of the EP Sola, as well as the appearance of the one-off single "She," which was used in the acclaimed documentary Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story. Paper Castles arrived in 2019 and yielded the sumptuous hit single "Something Holy," followed by an extensive bout of international touring. Like most musicians at the time, Lou spent 2020 in occupational stasis due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but her creative spark never dimmed, due in large part to having fallen in love and subsequently having her heart broken. She chronicled those tumultuous times on 2021's aptly named and transcendent Glow and its surprise late-year follow-up Child's Play

LAUNDROMAT

Inspired by a broad range of influences including Kim Deal, Broadcast, Jaki Liebezeit, Jason Albertini, Madlib and Gonjasufi, Hayes also cites film as a huge source of intrigue: "I find a lot of inspiration in film - Repo Man (1984), Deep End (1970), Punch-drunk Love (2002), and Alice in the Cities (1974) in particular."

Lyrically, the project explores the end of the world, binge drinking, social anhedonia, nostalgia, as well as the time Hayes got ‘catfished’ - for nearly 7 years.
