MARIKA HACKMAN

“hand solo,” “blow,” “conventional ride”—these are just a few of the cheeky offerings off Any Human Friend, the new album from rock provocateur Marika Hackman. “This whole record is me diving into myself and peeling back the skin further and further, exposing myself in quite a big way. It can be quite sexual,” Hackman says. “It’s blunt, but not offensive. It’s mischievous.” There’s also depth to her carnal knowledge: Any Human Friend (out via AMF Records and Sub Pop Records in North and South America) is ultimately about how, as she puts it, “We all have this lightness and darkness in us.”

Hackman lifted the album’s title from a documentary about four-year-olds interacting with dementia patients in senior homes. At one point, two little girls confer about their experience there, with one musing on how it’s great to make “any human friend,” whether old or young. “When she said that it really touched a nerve in me,” says the London-based musician. “It’s that childlike view where we really accept people, are comfortable with their differences.”

Such introspection has earned Hackman her name. Her 2015 debut, We Slept at Last, was heralded for being nuanced and atmospheric. She really found her footing with her last release, I’m Not Your Man—which earned raves from The Guardian, Stereogum, and Pitchfork—and its sybaritic, swaggering hit “Boyfriend,” which boasts of seducing away a straight guy’s girlfriend. “Her tactile lyrics keep the songs melodically strong and full of surprises,” remarked Pitchfork. We’ll say!

“I’m a hopeless romantic,” she explains. “I search for love and sexual experience, but also I’m terrified by it.” Hackman is a Rid of Me-era PJ Harvey for the inclusive generation: unbounded by musical genre, a preternatural lyricist and tunesmith who isn’t afraid to go there. (Even her cover art, which finds Hackman nearly nude while cradling a baby pig, is a nod to Dutch photographer Rineke Dijkstra’s unfiltered photos of mothers just after they gave birth.) To that end, “hand solo” extorts the virtues of masturbation and  features Hackman’s favorite line, “Under patriarchal law, I’m going to die a virgin.” The song “blow” paints a picture of social excess. And “conventional ride” thumbs its nose at heterosexual sex through “the trope a lot of gay women experience: sleeping with someone, then it becomes apparent you’re kind of an experiment.”

The diverse work of legendary singer, composer and transgender activist Beverly Glenn-Copeland has been gathering momentum in recent years thanks to a reissue of the extraordinary folk-jazz explorations of his debut self-titled album (1970) and the widespread discovery of his acclaimed masterpiece Keyboard Fantasies (1986); an ahead-of-it’s-time synth exploration which somehow combines the essence of new-age minimalism, early Detroit techno and the warmth of traditional songwriting.

Throughout a fifty year recording career, Beverly Glenn-Copeland's music has defied categorisation and genre, its only consistency being the extraordinary fusion of vision, technology, spirituality and place.

After many years of absence from the concert stage, Glenn-Copeland has resumed performing with his new band, Indigo Rising, in Canada and Europe. On Neon Brown (out summer 2019 on 4AD), Velvet Negroni is a griot relaying the life and times of his own island—it’s a singular place, with the squeak and thrum of guitar strings looped over drum machine beats accented by steely marimbas, all creating a pocket for one of the most authentic and original artistic voices ever committed to tape.

You follow his voice as it rhymes in double time, or hiccups and la-las through a break, or croons from a room down the hall, as it unfolds into another story of lost love, or another joke about lost drugs, as he tries to make sense of a life spent in the (sometimes harrowing) pursuit of communion.

Turns out what sounds like a lonely island is in fact the city of Minneapolis. Velvet Negroni grew up in an outer suburb of the Twin Cities as Jeremy Nutzman, a black kid adopted into a white evangelical Christian family. His fundamentalist missionary of a mother drove him to virtuosity, both as a classically trained concert pianist and a competitive figure skater, but he had to climb out his bedroom window to play guitar in his first band.

Battles return this autumn with their fourth album Juice B Crypts on Warp Records to follow their complex, mind-bending predecessors Mirrored, Gloss Drop, Dross Glop and La Di Da Di. Their latest album is a sensory overload of information that throws everything you thought you knew about Battles into flux once again.

Battles redefined line-up puts Ian Williams (Keys, Guitar, Electronics) and John Stanier (Drums) at the core of the covertly named Juice B Crypts, which was produced and mixed by Chris Tabron (Trash Talk, Beyonce, Mobb Deep, Ratking). Marrying synthesizer loops, cut-throat drum patterns and cyclical riffs, the album flirts with new technology, questions of authenticity and the technicalities of reinventing the wheel at the eleventh hour.

In true Battles form, the pair have encrypted the album with hidden codes and secret languages that only they know. What does the composer of "Taxi", a semi-modular analog subtractive audio synthesizer, a two cycle gasoline tie drilling machine and a 70's band with fifteen studio and six live albums have to do with Juice B Crypts? One answer Ian points you to is the concept of ‘medium specificity’ coined by New York art critic Clement Greenberg, which valued artists’ abilities to manipulate mediums based on their materiality. Like painters on the vanguard of modernism, Battles apply their medium of choice: intricate arpegios sequenced on an Elektron Octatrack, mind-altering pitch-shifted chord progressions, sixteen-measure time signatures and twisted clues to do the talking. All to be somewhat expected from the band responsible for boundary-defying songs such as “The Yabba”, “Atlas” and “Ice Cream”.

Space Rock Psych Warriors Black Mountain announce their forthcoming album, Destroyer, out May 24 via Jagjaguwar. Broen is the name of an Oslo, Mykonos-based quintet who specialize in vibrantly experimental groove-conscious pop. In the band’s native language, Norwegian, Broen means bridge. When the band started in 2011, its moniker was just a name that sounded cool to its founders. However, as the distinct artistic personalities in the collective began pooling their influences, they found it was an apt descriptive term for their bold musical adventures into unchartered artistic territories.

“The name has become a metaphor for us in terms of creating bridges between sounds and musical landscapes that would conventionally maybe not meet,” says vocalist Marianna S. A. Røe. Adds tuba player Heida Karine Johannesdottir Mobeck: “Each time we play, we take the risk to walk together over the bridge that can lead us band members to musical places we didn’t know existed.”

Arm in arm for those fearless sonic odysseys are Anja Lauvdal synths, Lars Ove Fossheim guitar, Hans Hulbækmo drums, Heida Karine Johannesdottir Mobeck tuba, and Marianna S. A. Røe vocals. The five-piece band pens emotive and artfully-abstract poetic lyrics, and composes wildly imaginative pop informed by jazz, funk, psychedelia, electronics hip-hop, and whatever genre members are feeling on any given day. To date, Broen have internationally released 2017’s I Love Art (Bella Union), and 2019’s Do You See the Falling Leaves?( Bella Union).

Songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Dominic Wolf is the rendering of the one-man band. Tucked away in his home studio in East London, Dominic Wolf has spent the past year building a collection of organic sounds and samples he uses throughout his live set and upcoming releases. From using popcorn boxes as drum toms to using chocolate powder tins and wasabi seeds as shakers - every object that reaches Dominic's home studio in East London has been recorded and sampled in his latest works. Pillow Queens formed in Winter 2016 with the immediate release of their demo EP Calm Girls, which sparked a successful string of UK & Irish dates & festival appearances.

Their second EP State of the State made its way onto BBC 6 Music’s playlists, with Steve Lamacq calling them “deceptively infectious, with sharp hooks and sharp nails”. The lead single Favourite picked up lots of great support on the UK’s national airwaves, including plays on BBC RADIO 1, BBC Introducing, RADIO X & Amazing Radio. After two more UK tours, and two sellout hometown gigs, the band soon found themselves more and more comfortable on bigger stages, opening for the likes of American Football and Pussy Riot, capping off Summer 2018 with a stadium performance opening for Idles & Future Islands.

This quick momentum led to the band working with Mercury Prize nominated producer Tommy McLaughlin for their next single Gay Girls – which received a nomination for the RTE Choice Music Prize song of the year, as well as International airplay on NPR’s World Cafe & KEXP.

ELENA SETIÉN

Elena Setién is an artist defined by her vivid songwriting and nuanced compositions. The multi-instrumentalist’s music exudes the bold individualism and sense of empathy associated with her homeland of Spain’s Basque region. Setién’s declarative gestures both musically and lyrically breathe life into her expressive allegories. Her careful arrangements are direct and affecting and give her room for forays into experimentation. While Elena’s recordings are decidedly pop, she has considerable experience as an improviser. Another Kind Of Revolution, Elena Setién’s Thrill Jockey debut, is a work of entrancing, effortless beauty.

Setién grew up during a period of political upheaval in Spain, in the Basque region. The turmoil of the post-dictatorship period of the 1980s and the intensive civic actions left her with a sense of duty to fight for progress. A brief encounter with Laurie Anderson more recently also profoundly affected Setién. Specifically, Anderson’s parting thoughts on being an artist today: “You just have to make something beautiful and free.” Revolution is, for Setién, going back to simple truths and manifesting the beautiful in people. Her lyrics throughout Another Kind Of Revolution describe the beauty of everyday life, nature, and promote the forces of change not as a burden, but as the very source of hope to draw from.

DANA GAVANSKI

Dana Gavanski is a singer/songwriter currently residing in Toronto. She released her first EP, Spring Demos, in the fall of 2017 via Fox Food Records, a collection of delicate folk songs that she wrote the year before while living in Montreal. Once moving to Toronto, Dana met and began collaborating with some local musicians and is currently working on her first LP to be released later this year with the UK label Full Time Hobby. While still rooted in the intimacy of folk songwriting, Dana’s new album explores a different sonic texture with the addition of a full band.

Born in Vancouver to a Serbian family, but relocating to Montreal to attend university, Dana originally planned to pursue a career in film. However, she shifted her attention back to music when her then ex-partner left her his guitar before moving to NYC. Having known only how to play ‘Diamonds and Rust’ by Joan Baez, Dana picked up a Travis Picking technique book and started re-learning how to play. When in the Summer of 2016, she took a job with her father as a producer’s assistant on a horror film in the Laurentians, she made enough to focus solely on developing her music for a year. With that came her first EP, Spring Demos. In April 2019, Dana released her debut 7” single “One by One” b/w “Do You?” on Full Time Hobby.

Dana’s debut LP is due in early 2020.

New York-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Beshken is self-releasing his album ​Aisle of Palm, d​ ue June 17th. Arriving on the heels of two 2018 singles, “Victim”, “The Medicine” and the 2017 EP, ​For Time Is the Longest Distance Between Two People, t​ his latest record coalesces elements of indie, experimental dance, ambient, psychedelia and dream-pop. It’s a highly personal testament to Beshken’s chameleonic dance between genres. Exploring the point where acoustic recording and digital rendering meet, ​Aisle of Palm​ is an effective lesson in how field recordings, synthesizers, and introspective lyrics can fuse into a challenging, yet accessible format.

Beshken wrote the LP in late 2017 while living in Berlin, influenced by an existential chapter adapting to a foreign place and ruminating on sleepless nights. These periods of transition from place to place or wakefulness to sleep can be vulnerable and isolating--​the first step in letting one’s unconscious have agency. Beshken is content at this hypnagogic junction, seeing it as ​fertile ground for meditation and new beginnings,​ ​“The record is brooding and tempestuous--but I was also aiming to explore the levity in disorienting moments”.

Synth and bass sounds in the single “Cursed” are actually noises from the echochamber-like geodesic domes of Teufelsberg, a Cold War-era listening station just outside the German capital. “Focus On” is a mantra to living life in the present, the lyrics repetitive and reassuring. In “Golden Sun”, a haunting Moog Mother-32 modular synthesizer complements a garage​-​inspired groove. Beshken’s falsetto evokes emotion on “Gray Ghost”, while the song outro elicits videogame-like circuitry.

ELSA HEWITT

Elsa Hewitt is a prolific producer and songwriter, known for making avant-garde electronic music. Mesmerising and deceptively experimental, her music merges currents of lo-fi house, future garage, dub-techno, experimental-techno and hip-hop, with hazy textural ambience, well honed songwriting and spoken word. It is a distinctive yet unpredictable sound that continues to evolve with every release. In 2016, following over twelve years developing her songwriting and aptitude for creating albums, the talented artist won the PRS Foundation's Lynsey de Paul Prize and was shortly after selected for Brownswood’s Future Bubblers Year 2 collective. Consequently in 2017 there came the release of three albums; 'Cameras From Mars', 'Dum Spiro Spero' and 'Peng Variations', which are now collectively entitled 'Becoming Real Trilogy'. In 2018 Hewitt produced 'Quilt Jams', consisting of 13 improvised, minimal and ambient compositions, 'Given' for 'Future Bubbers 2.0’, progressive pop single 'Invisible Threads', the 'Becoming Real - Trilogy Compilation' vinyl, and created and performed work for the Open Music Archive and The Jazz Cafe. Elsa Hewitt’s newest album 'Citrus Paradisi' is released on 1st March 2019, making it her fifth album release in two years.

Eraserland is just that. It’s death to ego, and rebirth to anything or anyone you want to be.”

In December 2017, Tim Showalter was uncertain about his next record and the shape it would eventually take. With no new songs written and lacking any clear vision, he was unprepared for the message he would receive from his friend Carl Broemel, the conversation that would follow, and the album that would become Eraserland. Leading off with standout track “Weird Ways” and his powerful declaration of “I don’t feel it anymore,” Eraserland traces Showalter’s evolution from apprehension to creative awakening, carving out a new and compelling future for Strand of Oaks.

“This project seemed to just fall together naturally,” said Broemel, guitarist for My Morning Jacket. “I felt drawn to Tim’s positive energy and his albums…I threw it out there that I’d be happy to help in any way I could with the record.” Broemel quickly reignited Showalter’s interest in what would become Strand of Oaks’ sixth full-length studio release, and within 24 hours, My Morning Jacket members Patrick Hallahan (drums), Bo Koster (keys), and Tom Blankenship (bass) were also on board.

JACKIE MENDOZA

Born and raised in the border city of Chula Vista, California, Jackie Mendoza blends the cultural influences of her hometown and her motherland of Tijuana, Mexico, creating eccentric electronic pop, Latin-driven dance beats and vibrant soundscapes. Latin-pop, indie pop and electronic music have all had strong but equal impacts on Jackie’s musical path at different times in her life. Mendoza has been experimenting with electronic ukulele-based pop, expanding the instrument’s sound to its maximum potential by layering it with beats while singing in both English and Spanish. Her debut EP, LuvHz (Love Hurts), out later this year on Luminelle Recordings, was mostly written during a precarious time in Mendoza’s life, and is a six-track exploration of love and relationships.

Bianca scout is a musician and a dancer although, upon exposure to her craft, it is apparent that the two stem from an inseparable core of her being. 

Her interstellar chords and still-lake skimming vocals invoke a collage of worlds that leave ripples in the recipient’s emotional pool.

Her ability to invite her listeners into an all encompassing potentiality spores an eternity in a moment.

French producer/vocalist/DJ COUCOU CHLOE – a resident of both London and NTS Radio – released her debut EP Halo (on Creamcake) only in autumn of 2016, but much has happened since then. With her track “Doom” appearing as part of the soundtrack for Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma show at New York Fashion Week in September 2017, the scene was set for her Erika Jane EP – this time on nascent record label NUXXE, which she co-runs alongside Sega Bodega and Shygirl.

With a thoroughly modern sound that has gestated online but lives primarily in the club, her beats range from sensuous and slow hip-hop bangers – complete with her modulated vocal raps – to  nervously energetic, four to the floor with a twist. Playfully experimental but always with an ear tuned to pop, Erika Jane was the best realization of COUCOU CHLOE yet… until 2019’s Naughty Dog EP. With sumptuous trap-adjacent production and a no fucks attitude, Naughty Dog is another reflection of COUCOU CHLOE’s blasé charisma.

Yoni Wolf has spent the last two decades traveling the remote sonic terrain where underground hip hop, avant-pop, and psych-rock meet. In that time he’s cultivated a unique sound, and a unique position as one of contemporary music’s most distinctive voices. Some of Yoni’s most compelling and critically-praised musical experiments have been issued under the moniker WHY? and his latest entry is no exception. On AOKOHIO Yoni condenses the essential elements of WHY? into a stunningly potent musical vision. 

Co-produced by Yoni and his brother Josiah, AOKOHIO presents a rich palette of musical voices that emerge and disappear into a constantly shifting kaleidoscope of sound. “I wanted a wide variety of sounds. I didn't want this album to sit in one sonic zone. I've always felt like too jagged of a person to be smooth in that way,” Yoni says. While the album features many notable guest contributors, from Lala Lala’s Lillie West, to Nick Sanborn and Amelia Meath of Sylvan Esso, the listener’s attention remains squarely directed on Yoni’s voice and vision.

AOKOHIO finds Yoni rethinking fundamental aspects of his approach to creating and delivering his music. The album is presented as six movements comprised of two to four songs each, with some segments appearing as brief fragments that dissolve within seconds.

“When I started this project, I decided I needed to try a new approach in creating music and how I work,” Yoni reflects. “I wasn't feeling the idea of going back in and making another ten or twelve song album. It felt arduous. It felt like too much. So I wanted to pare the process down and make it manageable. I thought, 'Why don't I make small five or six minute movements and finish up each movement before I move on to the next.' That's how I started approaching it. The whole process took over five years, I'd start working on something and set it aside for awhile. The earliest songs on this album started in 2013.“

As Yoni reimagined his approach to creating music, he also began thinking of new ways to share the music with his audience. “I initially wanted to release the music as I progressed through the project,” Yoni says. “When I finished a movement I wanted to put it up digitally on Bandcamp or Soundcloud. I just wanted to make little pieces of music and put them out there. But I had a call with my manager and the label and they said, 'We can release stuff through time like that, but we want to do it properly.' So the idea of the project changed after that, but it retained the integrity of working in movements. It's definitely a very different way of working for me. I think it has yielded some interesting results.”

The concept of sharing AOKOHIO in segments over time has been preserved with the release of an accompanying visual album. “I think it's a very artful way of putting the music out there,” Yoni explains. “It's like a television series, it's revealing itself slowly over time. I think it's cool that the audience gets to hear it one piece at a time, and has to wait and digest each piece before they get the next one.”

With his four acclaimed solo albums and myriad records of various collaboration, Kevin Morby has become a true musical auteur. Each record possesses its own unique persona and explores intriguing themes and fertile terrain through shifting, focused textures and dexterous, dedicated skill. And now, with the lavish, resplendent, career-best double LP Oh My God (out April 26th via Dead Oceans), Morby delivers a grandiose director's cut of his biggest statement to date, epic in scope as well as sound. Additionally, today Kevin shares the video for the album's first single, "No Halo," directed by Chris Good.

Throughout his past work, Morby has noticed the ubiquity of an apparent religious theme. Though not identifying as "religious" in the slightest, Morby recognizes in himself a somewhat spiritual being with a secular attitude towards the soulful. And so, in an effort to tackle that notion head-on and once-and-for-all, he sat down in his form of church—on planes and in beds—and wrote what would become his first true concept-album. If Singing Saw was Kevin's LA record, and City Music was his ode to New York City, then Oh My God lives in the sky, above the weather, both nowhere and everywhere at once.

"Religion is around all of us," Morby says. "It's a universal language and there is profound beauty in it. I've found it a useful tool within songwriting, as it's something everyone can relate to on some level. There are religious themes or imagery in a lot of what I've done, so I wanted to get all of that out and speak only that language for a whole record. It's not a born-again thing; it's more that 'oh my god' is such a profound statement we all use multiple times a day and means so many different things. It's not about an actual god but a perceived one, and it's an outsider's view of the human experience in terms of religion."

In 2016, on the heels of a trio of critically-acclaimed albums, he wrote the protest song "Beautiful Strangers" about the devastating world events of that year, and in it he inserted multiple "oh my god"s as pleas of desperation. The song became his most celebrated work to date and the phrase became a mantra for Morby, inspiring him to weave the exclamation conceptually into the fabric of an entire album. In effect, he sought to highlight how that immortal turn of phrase embodies so much of our relationship with the sacred and profane—how religion is all around us, always, and that by simply uttering an OMG we enforce its ubiquity and ability to endure while humanizing its reach.

KISHI BASHI

Kishi Bashi is the pseudonym of singer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter Kaoru Ishibashi. Born in Seattle, Washington, Ishibashi grew up in Norfolk, Virginia where both of his parents were professors at Old Dominion University. As a 1994 graduate of Matthew Fontaine Maury High School, he went on to study film scoring at Berklee College of Music before becoming a renowned violinist. Ishibashi has recorded and toured internationally as a violinist with diverse artists such as Regina Spektor, Sondre Lerche, and most recently, the Athens, Georgia-based indie rock band, of Montreal. He remains based in Athens.

Kishi Bashi is also the singer and founding member of the New York electronic rock outfit, Jupiter One. In 2011, he started to record and perform as a solo artist, opening for Sondre Lerche, Alexi Murdoch, and of Montreal. He supported of Montreal on their spring 2012 tour.

San Francisco band Hot Flash Heat Wave rose to prominence in the Bay Area music scene in 2015 with the release of their 'Gutter Girl' music video, from their debut album Neapolitan, with its accompanying video eventually trending on Reddit. Their versatile sound, at times reminiscent of psychedelia, dream pop, and post-punk, demonstrates a dynamic range of songwriting prowess centered around consistently infectious, sun-soaked melodies and guitar hooks.

HFHW formed in Davis, California as a noise collaboration between Adam Abildgaard and Nick Duffy in 2010, adding Ted Davis in the following years amidst a series of lineup changes. Renouncing the traditional front-manned format of most contemporary bands, the members instead each contribute songs and share the lead.

Helado Negro returns with This Is How You Smile, an album that freely  ickers between clarity and obscurity, past and present geographies, bright and unhurried seasons. Miami-born, New York-based artist Roberto Carlos Lange embraces a personal and universal exploration of aura – seen, felt, emitted – on his sixth album and second for RVNG Intl.

Following Lange’s personal-as-political 2016 album Private Energy, re-released as Private Energy (Expanded) in 2017, This Is How You Smile  nds vitality in turning the privacy dial further inward. On “Please Won’t Please,” the album’s  rst o ering and opening track, Lange sets the scene with a spare drumbeat that moves the music forward in a more maligned than militant march, his voice tenderly permits himself weariness: “We light ourselves on  re, just to see if anyone believes.” Something must be reserved, “will anyone rescue what’s left of me.” This Is How You Smile only grows and glows brighter from there; an album that meditates on the slow, eternal love of family, and gently proposes revisiting those feelings as a way to relate to and beyond our core of familiarity.

Through her folkloric mystique, otherworldly psychedelia, and a dash of enigmatic punk, Ahomale by Combo Chimbita catapults the sacred knowledge of our forebears into the future. Their second studio album and Anti- Records debut sees the visionary quartet drawing from ancestral mythologies and musical enlightenment to unearth the awareness of Ahomale, the album’s cosmic muse. Comprised of Carolina Oliveros’ mesmeric contralto, illuminating storytelling and fierce guacharaca rhythms, Prince of Queens’ hypnotic synth stabs and grooving bass lines, Niño Lento’s imaginative guitar licks, and Dilemastronauta’s powerful drumming, the lure and lore of Combo Chimbita comes into existence.

Du Blonde may sound like a band, but in fact it is, and always has been, the work of just one person. Beth Jeans Houghton.

Her new album Lung Bread For Daddy delves even deeper into self sufficiency, seeing Beth take the reigns on production, instrumentation, album artwork and direction of music videos. This project is entirely her own.  “I've always known exactly what I want my records to sound like and apart from drums, I have the ability to play all the instruments, so why wouldn't I? It was also a ‘fuck you’ to anybody who has made me feel like my playing abilities were not good enough over the years.”  Houghton states defiantly.

Lung Bread For Daddy veers wildly between genres reminiscent of proto-punk, psych rock and the wholesome song writing of the 1970’s, taking the listener on a journey through the landscape of her past. It is an honest and often uncomfortable look into the life of a person who’s experiences (“ My lyrics are always autobiographical. I can't write fictional lyrics.” ) have been touched by a myriad of characters, homes across continents, periods of extreme loneliness, mental illness and a search for an understanding of personal identity.

Flume rose to prominence as a teenager with his brilliant, scene-starting, self-titled debut in 2012. Featuring the hits Holdin On, On Top, Sleepless and others, the album amassed global plaudits, becoming a chart-topper in his native Australia. In the two years that followed, Flume established a name as a serious international contender, thanks to his compelling live show (debuting at Coachella, Lollapalooza, Reading & Leeds and many others) and skillful remixes of high-profile acts including Lorde and Disclosure.

After a series of well-received collaborations (Lockjaw EP with Chet Faker [2014] and Some Minds with Andrew Wyatt [2015]), Flume released his second LP, Skin. Launching with the blockbuster hit Never Be Like You feat. Kai, the album reinforced Flume’s status as an inventive, boundary pushing producer while simultaneously reaching huge new audiences around the world. That year, in addition to becoming an A-list BBC Radio 1 artist, Flume sold over 300,000 tickets globally across a sold out 59 date world tour. BROOKE BENTHAM

Having spent most of her younger years up North, Bentham channels a maturity and life ethic that's wise beyond her age, a result of having partially raised herself. Her parents worked away from home a lot (her dad is an engineer, her mum a primary school teacher), so it was often up to Bentham and her three older brothers to fend for themselves. “I think it made me grow up a lot faster than I would have,” she says. Lending an air of fate too, the experience of being brought closer to elder siblings switched her onto their musical obsessions. The likes of French electro duo Justice and Ed Banger artist Uffie haven't exactly informed Bentham's own oeuvre, but being exposed to those sounds early on made her acutely aware of a world outside of commercial pop music. She picked up a guitar early, even attempted banjo at one stage, and started taking singing lessons at the age of 15. That's when her teacher encouraged her to start writing songs and gigging at nearby pubs and open mic nights.

“I was writing a lot of Paolo Nutini inspired cheesy acoustic stuff,” she laughs, embarrassed now. At the time, most females with an acoustic guitar were singing similar tunes, it was the norm but it was also a means to an end. “Everything I wrote I hated. It was so frustrating trying to find one distinguished sound I could have as my own. But I just kept doing it, kept writing.” A huge fan at the time of Yo La Tengo, Fleet Foxes, Kevin Morby and Bon Iver, she continued to mine her own creative voice to try and develop something similarly ground-breaking. Eventually her first taste of success – a song called 'Oliver' – was a turn in the road. That tune brought her the sonic direction she was working towards. Her first proper show was at local legendary rock venue The Cluny back in Newcastle. By chance, the sound guy that night also did sound for successful performer James Bay and a connection sparked with Communion, the label part-owned by Ben Lovett of Mumford & Sons. She played a showcase evening for them as soon as she moved to London, where she's lived now for three years.

A few years ago, while in a tour van somewhere in Idaho, the members of Chastity Belt—Julia Shapiro, Gretchen Grimm, Lydia Lund, and Annie Truscott—opted to pass the time in a relatively unusual fashion: They collectively paid one another compliments, in great and thoughtful detail. This is what we like best about you, this is why we love you. 

I think of that image all the time, the four of them opening themselves up like that, by choice. It’s hard to imagine other bands doing the same. But beyond their troublesome social media presence—see: the abundance of weapons-grade duck face, the rolling suitcase art—and beyond the moonlit deadpan of say, “IDC,” lies, at the very least, an honesty and an intimacy and an emotional brilliance that galvanizes everything they do together. Which is a fancy way of saying: They’re funny, but they’re also capable of being vulnerable. “Giant Vagina” and “Pussy Weed Beer,” two highlights from their aptly titled 2013 debut, No Regerts, were immediately preceded by a sublime yet easily overlooked cut named “Happiness.” I saw a younger, still unsettling version of myself all across 2015’s Time to Go Home. 

I Used to Spend So Much Time Alone, their third and finest full-length to date, was recorded live in July of 2016, with producer Matthew Simms (Wire) at Jackpot! in Portland, Oregon (birthplace of some of their favorite Elliott Smith records.) It’s a dark and uncommonly beautiful set of moody post-punk that finds the Seattle outfit’s feelings in full view, unobscured by humor. There is no irony in its title: Before she had Chastity Belt, and the close relationships that she does now, Shapiro considered herself a career loner. That’s no small gesture. I can make as much sense of this music as I can my 20s: This is a brave and often exhilarating tangle of mixed feelings and haunting melodies that connects dizzying anguish (“This Time of Night”) to shimmering insight (“Different Now”) to gauzy ambiguity (“Stuck,” written and sung by Grimm). It’s a serious record but not a serious departure, defined best, perhaps, by a line that Shapiro shares early on its staggering title track: “I wanna be sincere.” 

When asked, their only request was that what you’re reading right now be brief, honest, free of hyperbole, and “v chill.” When pressed for more, Truscott said, “Just say that we love each other. Because we do.”

"Gang at the Windmill, Brixton, now as a four piece, with a younger sister on guitar and singing! A half hour set, one piece of music. But not prog, as they were hinting. They have definite musical ideas, sometimes absurd ones, which become better as they stick to them. The more absurd the better. They have a free way with performance too: they know the absurdity of rock routines and develop a way of being together through them and out the other side into laughter and the scary space of whatever comes after rock-ism. The singing swaps back and forth between one brother drumming at the back and one on guitar at the front -- which means the uncertain mood is shared out as a general problem, socialised -- it's not just ye olde young man angst. Joe on the bass leaps about like a big kid, he is the one with his shirt off and a surplus of energy. They are a band, they need each other's difference and physicality.  I really liked the strangeness of Gang's first album, and I like what they are doing now even more."

Deeper’s Origins date back to 2014 when prior to releasing any material an abrupt line-up change left the Chicago based band looking for a new direction. Singer and guitarist Nic Gohl along with childhood friend, guitarist Mike Clawson and drummer Shiraz Bhatti threw out all of their old songs and brought on bassist Drew McBride to round out the lineup. The subsequent demos leaned on intricate guitar interplay, direct “of the times” vocals and a spirit that speaks to the band’s collective place in this pit of endless internet.

Deeper honed their sound over the course of 2015 & 16’ in basements, lofts, and anywhere that would have them. Touring the demos and landing at a fully realized inflection point. Call it Post-Punk, call it Indie Rock, it’s a record that steps in and out of boxes filtered through an unmistakable midwestern lens.

As social norms and political ideologies distort, writing and creating art was the only way to control the growing voice in the band’s collective head. The conceptualizing of the album started and stopped over that two year time warp culminating in a few feverish tracking sessions in late 2017. What was left is a stark shimmering portrait of a modern American experience.

Sarah Klang is the 26-year-old singer songwriter that hails from Gothenburg, Sweden’s second largest city.  Since 2016 she has been releasing what she describes as pop songs laced with country and Americana influences and is about to release her second album ‘Creamy Blue’ on October 25th 2019.  After making her major breakthrough in 2018 with a series of critically acclaimed singles she went on to release her #1 charting and Swedish Grammy winning album ‘Love In the Milky Way’ later that same year.

Whilst working as a waitress in her father’s bar she made the decision to turn her hand to writing her own songs, using her love and the long history of classic love songs as her starting point.  This resulted in her writing the kind of songs that have charmed Scandinavian and European audiences alike. With her heart meltingly beautiful yet grandiose voice she manages to create the illusion that she’s simultaneously pouring her bleeding heart into the mic whilst trying to claw her way out of the depths of her longing for lost love, leaving the audience wondering about the heartache that lay behind it. With a batch of self-penned songs that showcased a dreamy melancholy she set about playing in a number of underground venues in Gothenburg. From the stage she created an almost vintage soundscape preaching to the audience that although she may have been devastated by the longing for the love of another optimism for the future always wins through.

Following the release of debut album Love In The Milky Way’ Sarah embarked on a sell out tour of Scandinavia which included three straight sold out nights at Stockholm’s Södra Teatern and a triumphant hometown return at the Gothenburg Concert Hall.  A short European tour followed and at the start of 2019 Sarah and her band accompanied First Aid Kit on their arena tour. During the tour she showcased new material from her upcoming album, culminating in her performing her biggest headline show to date at Stockholm’s Gröna Lund in May.

October 25th 2019 is the release date for ‘Creamy Blue’, Sarah Klangs second album, once again written and produced in collaboration with Kevin Andersson.  In back up to the release Sarah and her band head back out on a European tour and who knows what awaits after that?

The group released their demo, Basic Pain Procedure in 1983, but it was two years until they met PWL producer Phil Harding, who produced their 1985 debut single "Isn't It Funny How Your Body Works?" and helped them set up their own label, Power Of Voice Communications. The band at the time was inspired by the post-punk scene and specifically acts like "Siouxsie and the Banshees, Killing Joke and Bauhaus who were having a big influence on us, in some ways stylistically but also in the energy that they gave".

They released three more singles on their own label, "Warsaw Ghetto" (1985), "Warsaw Ghetto Remixes" (1986) and "Let Your Body Learn" (1986), before signing to Mute Records in 1986. The singles "Murderous" (1986) and "Let Your Body Learn" (1987) followed, building their reputation in the Industrial Rock, Electronic Body Music and Hard Beat scenes, as well as making inroads into the developing Chicago House scene.

"Join In The Chant" (1987) became part of the Balearic beat scene that influenced the UK acid house scene.

With Turn Out The Lights, the now 21-year-old Baker returns to a much bigger stage, but with the same core of breathtaking vulnerability and resilience. From its opening moments —when herchiming, evocative melody is accompanied by swells of strings —Turn Out The Lights throws open the doors to the world without sacrificing the intimacy that has become a hallmark of her songs. The album explores how people live and come to terms with their internal conflict, and the alternately shattering and redemptive ways these struggles playout in relationships. Baker casts an unflinching and accepting eye on the duality of –and contradictions in –the human experience, at times evenfinding humor and joy in the midst of suffering. She ultimately calls on herlisteners to move beyond “good” and “bad,” or “happy” and “sad,” to embrace more complex truths.

The album was recorded at the legendary Ardent Studios in her hometown of Memphis, TN, and mixed by Craig Silvey (The National, Florence & the Machine, Arcade Fire). This evolution fromSprained Ankle’sintentionally spareproduction allowed greater scope and freedom for Baker,who is still the album’s sole writer and producer. Strings and woodwinds now shade the corners of her compositions, and Baker takes topiano rather than guitar on several tracks. In songs like the epic “Claws In Your Back,” these new textures push Baker’s work to cinematic heights of intensity.

When you think of all things Pink, a sound that fuses the likings of Basement Jaxx, the Gorillaz, CSS, and Tom Tom Club, with lyrics focused on “women empowerment” and re-defining the definition of “kawaii” or cute in Japanese, you think of CHAI.

Formed in 2012, in the Nagoya region of Japan, identical twins Mana (voc/keys) and Kana (gt./cho.) would ask fellow high school classmate, Yuna (dr./cho.), and later Yuki (ba./cho.), a college acquaintance, to join what we now know as CHAI. Both independent releases, “Hottaraka Series” which translates to “irresponsible series”, was the title of CHAI’s 1st EP released in December of 2016, soon followed by “Homegoro Series”, their 2nd EP, released in April of the following year.

"Hello, Hope, it's been a while," go the opening lines of "Dead Ends", the centerpiece of Ben Cooper's latest EP as Radical Face. Over the eight years he put into the three-part The Family Tree series -- The Roots (2011), The Branches (2013), and The Leaves (2016) -- he'd grasped onto ideas and perceptions that left him hopelessly drained, creatively and emotionally. Speaking with a professional finally enabled him to let go, something he's honored by naming his new effort Therapy.

With The Family Tree, Cooper sought  to confront his difficult upbringing in Florida by forming a fictional genealogy paired with stirring folk arrangements. Intense family drama near the end of the process pushed The Leaves to take on a far more personal tone, as Cooper felt "dishonest… putting it into a separate avatar." That only made the songs increasingly more difficult to perform, however, which coupled with the artistic exhaustion of pairing music with his grand concept made him pine for palliation.

In an attempt to test himself and move on from the compositional confines of that trilogy, Cooper undertook a number of different projects. There was his Missing Film instrumental album, a score he released for filmmakers to use for free, and his Covers, Vol. 1 EP, in which he only sang songs by female artists. Adding to the challenge was his relocation to California; moving away from his studio in Florida forced him to relearn how to record in an apartment with minimal tools.

But Cooper as says, "If you wait for ideal conditions, you'll never get anything done." Singing the songs of Lana Del Rey and Cyndi Lauper reconnected him to traditional structures, while watching the Boom Boom Room performances on Twin Peaks: The Return and revisiting Talking Heads inspired him to seek richer, vaster orchestrations. His desire to leave the acoustic leanings of his past works behind and return to verse-chorus framework became the drive for the sonic shifts on Therapy.

No matter how civilized we become, there’s an innate inclination towards tribalism. That yearning won’t be pacified until it’s satiated or satisfied by the embrace of a tribe either.

Halifax-born and Vancouver-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Jon Bryant explores the conundrum of connection on his full-length debut for Nettwerk, Cult Classic.

“Over the past few years I’ve really become a skeptic. Thanks to social media, politics, religion and news media, etc.,” he explains. “Many songs on the album reflect that skepticism and emphasize the ways I’ve evolved as both a writer and person; spiritually, mentally and emotionally.”

Originally from Wrexham North Wales, Polly is now based in Margate's creative community after spending 5 years in the London music scene with fronting a shoegaze band. Art School Girlfriend is the next chapter in the musical tapestry of Polly's life - exploring themes of lust, queer identity, infatuation and disillusionment.

Margate's coastline has provided a dramatic and apt backdrop for the upcoming debut EP, reflected in not only her uniquely intoxicating sound, but also the artwork and aesthetic. With everything written and produced by Polly in her studio space (which is nestled alongside Gabriel Stebbing, Ghost Culture et al) finishing touches were added at Epworth's infamous Church Studios. Raised on the music of The Velvet Underground, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave and Patti Smith, Art School Girlfriend's music is atmospheric and stark in equal measure, a perfect balance of calm and chaos.

Miss June is what happens when angst matures. Raised in the embers of punk rock, Miss June harness jagged, noisy guitars filtered through the unrivalled stage presence of frontperson Annabel Liddell, unafraid, unapologetic and ready to wake up the music scene.

Described as “some unholy union between Sonic Youth and Le Tigre” the NZ four piece, completed by the music school alumni recruited by Liddell – guitarist Jun Park, bass player Chris Marshall and drummer Tom Leggett – has built a reputation for fierce, formidable and head-spinning live shows.

Birthed out of the boredom of rural village life in Buckinghamshire, Haze now reside in Bristol and make urgent, dissonant music, described as a ‘special brand of ramshackle post-punk that’s raucous and dripping with irony’ by So Young Magazine.

Earlier this month Haze released ‘Piochitas’, the follow up to the critically acclaimed 2018 single ‘St John’. It’s a heavy, bass-driven track with acerbic lyrics inspired by Trotsky and his time in Mexico with Frida Kahlo; another step forward from this uncompromising and socially-concious Bristol-based four-piece. The band have set themselves up to have a breakthrough year in 2019 having already played a capacity show at DIY’s ‘Hello 2019’ showcase and with tour dates and a performance at The Great Escape ahead.

CHARLY BLISS

Though Charly Bliss has been a band for over half a decade, the path that led to their first full-length record, Guppy, has been anything but straightforward. As the story goes, the band officially started when frontwoman Eva Hendricks and guitarist Spencer Fox, both just 15, crossed paths at a Tokyo Police Club show in New York City, but the ties within the band go much deeper than that. “It’s kind of insane and hilarious,” says Eva, “Sam is my older brother, so obviously we’ve known each other our whole lives, but all of us have been connected to each other since we were little kids. Dan Shure and I dated when we were in our early teens and he and Spencer went to summer camp together. Dan and I broke up years ago, but eventually he’d become our bass player. The reason we all get along so well has to do with the fact we share this ridiculous history. We are all deeply embedded in each other’s lives.”

The ten tracks that make up Guppy, Charly Bliss’ sparkling full-length debut, show the band embracing all of their strengths—a combination of ripping guitars and irrepressible pop hooks, all delivered with the hyper-enthusiasm of a middle school cafeteria food fight. That every track is loaded front-to-back with sing/shout-worthy lyrics and earworm melodies is a testament to the band’s commitment to the art form of pop songwriting.

BARRIE

Inclusivity is at the heart of Barrie, the Brooklyn five-piece made of Barrie Lindsay, Dominic Apa, Spurge Carter, Sabine Holler and Noah Prebish. And on their debut LP Happy To Be Here, their multidimensional take on classic pop sounds awake and present, like a group that’s daydreaming but firmly there with one another. Lindsay largely wrote these songs late into the night, alone in her apartment, and her voice feels appropriately full of possibility throughout.

Barrie, the band, is primarily her project; on the record, which she co-produced with Jake Aron (Snail Mail, Solange, Grizzly Bear), Lindsay plays guitar, piano, synth and bass. But still, Barrie is distinctly not a solo project, and Happy To Be Here—out May 3, 2019 via Winspear—is very much a full band record. Dominic’s drums fill the entire album, while Noah added synths and Spurge sang on nearly every track; the three also contributed production. And Sabine, though stuck in Germany with visa issues, remotely recorded vocals.

Far Caspian’s lo-fi foundations were built in producer and frontman Joel Johnston’s university halls, later joined by fellow band members Jof Cabedo (drums and vocals) and Alessio Scozarro (bass and vocals). Since getting noticed by blogs early on, the Leeds dream-pop outfit have been tipped as “one of the North’s best emerging indie bands of the year” by The Line of Best Fit, with live audiences responding just as positively on the band’s first tour with a number of sold out shows and appearances at tastemasker festivals such as Live at Leeds and Hit The North.

BREATHE PANEL

Signed to FatCat Records (C Duncan, TRAAMS, Sigur Rós) and now based in London and Brighton, Breathe Panel released their debut album on July 13th 2018. Recorded with Hookworms frontman and production wizard MJ at his Suburban Home Studio in Leeds, the band have drawn upon musical influences including Chris Cohen, Real Estate and Deerhunter.

Meeting at University, Josh Tyler, Nick Green and Benjamin Reeves sprung out of a vibrant scene of musicians playing and gigging together. Between writing in a shared house basement and taking long walks on the South Downs, Breathe Panel have crafted their own sound based around the intuitive songwriting partnership of Josh and Nick.

Recalling thoughtful days spent outdoors, Nick's vocals wash across bright, shimmering guitars and intricate drum patterns to create something beautifully expansive yet highly introspective. They combine writing about topics including anxiety, colours, people, memories and the cure of nature with capturing a sound that makes them feel good.

Evangelical hawkers of DNA-rearranging post-punk exotica Melt Yourself Down play an intimate show at The Lexington this summer!

MADMADMAD

MADMADMAD began with the release of their bonkers jam “Mouse Rock/La Cigale”, a 7” single. The three French musicians first met in a studio in Tottenham (North London), and started jamming and recording several tracks filled with excitable rhythm.

Following their sold out, self-released white label EP ‘PAX’ in September 2017, and radio plays by the likes of Erol Alkan and Gilles Peterson, they’ve recently signed to in uential publisher J.I.M./Ninja Tune and released their first full length album in 2019.

MADMADMAD is a DIY studio album blending cold disco, early 2000’s electro, Krautrock and New York Noise using a combination of live and electronic instruments. Their live party set is utterly mad, loopy, and alien and after a storming live show at the Transmusicales in front of 3,000 people, they’re now hitting the road.

CRUMB

Crumb is the collaboration of Brooklyn-based musicians Lila Ramani (guitar, vocals), Brian Aronow (synth, keys, sax), Jesse Brotter (bass), and Jonathan Gilad (drums). The friends came together in 2016 with the goal of developing and recording a collection of songs Ramani had written in high school and college, the work ultimately resulting in the band’s first two EPs, 2016’s “Crumb” and 2017’s “Locket.” Encouraged by the warm reception online and at shows, the band evolved into a full time touring and recording project.In June 2019, Crumb will release Jinx, their first full-length album and best distillation to date of their singular blend of psych-rock and jazz. On Jinx, Ramani continues to helm the songwriting, with Aronow, Brotter, and Gilad each bringing distinctive ideas to match her ethereal, intimate vocals and luminous guitar lines. Informed by two years of nearly non-stop touring, the songs sweep and swell to capture the beguiling live spirit of Crumb shows, while taking listeners one step furtherdown the band’s dizzying, hypnotic path.

XYLOURIS WHITE

Xylouris White is firmly rooted in the past and future. Playing Cretan music of original and traditional composition, the band consists of Georgios Xylouris on Cretan laouto and vocals and Jim White on drum kit. Xylouris is known and loved by Cretans and Greeks at home and abroad and has been playing professionally from age 12. Jim White is an Australian drummer known and loved throughout the world as the drummer of Dirty Three, Venom P Stinger and now Xylouris White. For the last four years these two men have been performing as Xylouris White, the culmination of 25 years of friendship forged through music and place.

LATE KING DAISY

Late King Daisy is the new project from Artur Dyjecinski. In the years since his last release “The Valley of Yesiree”, Dyjecinski has been focused on creating his new project, stockpiling songs and developing his craft for an album (hopefully) to be released in 2019. In a sense, over time, the songs have come to take on an identity of their own, Dyjecinski explains. “I feel it deserves it’s own identity moving forward. The name feels like ‘me’ rather than a character that I inhabit, yet allows for an important separation and development."

William Tyler returns to London to play an intimate show at Cafe OTO following his sold out show at St John on Bethnal Green. 

Some words from M.C. Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger:

William Tyler’s new record, Goes West, is the best music that he’s ever made. I’m sure of this because I know and love all of his music intimately, and this album moves me the most, and the most consistently. The first time I heard it was in the late spring in the Texas Hill Country, rolling between limestone and scrub. I was on a cleanse then—no alcohol, no drugs, no evil thoughts—and was astonished at the emotional clarity that the album held. It offered up a model for what I wanted my head to feel like. Goes West marks a sort of narrowing of focus for William’s music; it sounds as though he found a way to point himself directly towards the rich and bittersweet emotional center of his music without being distracted by side trips. Perhaps this is down to the fact that William only plays acoustic guitar on the album, a clear and conscious decision considering that he is one of Nashville’s great electric guitarists. The band that performs Goes West alongside William—including guitarists Meg Duffy and Bill Frisell, bassist and producer Brad Cook, keyboardist James Wallace, drummer Griffin Goldsmith, and engineer Tucker Martine—is the best and most sympathetic group of players that William could have assembled to play these songs.

HEATHER WOODS BRODERICK

Heather Woods Broderick excels at distilling her experiences into a soulful melancholy that’s enduring both for it’s intimate relatable moments and its persistent sense of mystery. Her uncanny ear for evocative production and gorgeous vocal harmonies serves her well on her new album Glider. Throughout the album, the rich dreamlike atmospheres she creates hint at a darkness looming on the horizon, while the singularity of her ethereal voice always seems to linger long after the music has stopped.

As a talented multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Heather has had the opportunity to record and tour with plenty of incredible artists including Horse Feathers, Efterklang, Sharon Van Etten, and Lisa Hannigan, which has kept her moving house and traveling around the world for much of the past decade. She currently lives on the coast of Oregon, but it’s easy to imagine how her peripatetic lifestyle might diminish her sense of a place to call home, while also strengthening her resilience, and her connection to the reassuring constants in her life. As she explains “Living in so many different places has made me able to feel pretty comfortable everywhere.” Her uncommon sense of ease and grace, despite her hectic life, stems in part from her deeply rooted and intertwined musical and familial background.

THE MYSTERY LIGHTS

The Mystery Lights story begins in 2004 in the small town of Salinas California when friends Michael Brandon and Luis Alfonso – whose shared fondness for groups like The Mc5, Velvet Underground, Dead Moon, and The Fall (just to name a few) – decided to join forces and craft their own brand of unhinged rock and roll. From there they spent the better part of 10 years touring relentlessly before migrating to Queens New York in 2014.
With a live show known for its raw, visceral energy and relentless assault – leaving little to no stoppage between songs – they barreled through countless NYC haunts and DIY venues, quickly amassing a fervent local following. The buzz soon caught the attention of Daptone Records execs who were in the beginning stages of launching a new rock-centric imprint, Wick Records.

Impressed by the groups’ musicianship, groove, endless supply of energy, and understanding of musical history the Mystery Lights were quickly signed to Wick. Though a rock band at heart, the parallels to what Daptone Records had traditionally looked for in their Soul artists was undeniable. Soon sessions were booked with Producer/Engineer Wayne Gordon, and the release of their debut single “Too Many Girls” b/w “Too Tough to Bear” launched to mass critical fanfare.

Upon the release of their self-titled full-length on June 24th 2016 The Mystery Lights were quickly crowned “one of New York’s finest garage rock bands” by NME. Extensive touring, including multiple stops in Europe, Asia and Australia followed which found the group graduating from support slots at hole-in-the-wall clubs to headlining stages at major festivals worldwide.

After two years of break-neck, non-stop touring, the group settled back into Queens to prepare for their second full- length record, “ Too Much Tension” (out May 2019). With Wayne Gordon in the producer’s chair and several intense writing sessions under their belt the group were back at Daptone’s House of Soul and ready to track. While keeping the hard-hitting approach of the first LP, “TMT” finds the group digging deeper into their well of eclectic influences, enriching their sound while echoing the past. Mixing the eerie, insistent synth sounds of groups like The Normal and Suicide, the energy and swagger of punk’s golden age, the pop sensibility of The Kinks, and the stark, deliberate execution of Television – The Mystery Lights are taking their idiosyncratic brand of rock and roll to dizzying new heights.

MAX BLOOM

Things change: relationships, musical tastes, the ways we create. Max Bloom knows that. After eight years as part of Yuck, touring with the likes of Tame Impala, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Alvvays, and playing festivals like Coachella and Glastonbury – things changed. Bloom’s own taste was moving away from the ‘90s indie rock that had informed his songwriting with Yuck, and the breakdown of an eight-year-long relationship was the catalyst for him to start making his own music in 2017. Facing severe depression, the end of a long-term relationship and a migration back to his family home, Bloom started crafting solo material as a way to process those changes. Writing without the pressure of an established audience or a predefined sound allowed him to explore different ways of creating. Taking cues from classic songwriters like George Harrison, Elliot Smith and Harry Nilsson, Bloom began experimenting with more expansive instrumentation, rather than focusing on the distorted guitar sounds that characterised his work with Yuck. Writing with the kind of new perspective that only emotional upheaval can bring, Bloom’s lyrics are open, honest and conversational, resulting in a new sound that’s full of intimacy and truth. Sometimes change can be good.

After announcing their first public concerts in over 5 years, Chromatics is set to take the stage all over Europe. Onstage, the group will be playing their favorite moments from Night Drive, Kill For Love, Cherry, & Dear Tommy. Out of the greyer climes of Oslo— particularly East Oslo with its drizzly expanse of apartment blocks and gas stations stocked with Kent cigs and smut mags— has suddenly come a burst of color by the name of Das Body. Ellie, Kim, Patrik, Didrik— all four were born and bred in Norway and have become fast friends making music that is listenably and undeniably pop, though just a little iffier— pop that feels like a newly-thrifted favorite T-shirt: comfortably worn, slightly sunfaded, and with a cigarette burn on its sleeve. Das Body is writing pop music without the sentimentality that oversweetens so much currently on radio rotation. Instead, to their vulnerability, they mix in a little vulgarity, or a little light-heartedness. After a few years deep in the studio, they have now emerged with already plenty of buzz from local fests and press, and their debut EP released in September 2018 on Luminelle Recordings. Das Body brings a uniquely Nordic odd-pop that is, nonetheless, destined for charts the world over.

TIBERIUS B

Tiberius b is the solo moniker of Francesca Belcourt, a Canadian singer/songwriter and producer based in their birthplace, London England. Tiberius b chronicles the intimate and gruesome experiences of navigating the modern world with heightened sensitivity, atop a playful musical foundation. Under their own name, Belcourt has shared the stage with artists like Jenny Hval and TOPS, toured throughout North America as one half of the dream pop duo Mu, and collaborated with artists Cecile Believe and Project Pablo.

INKA UPENDO

From Helsinki, now living in Falmouth, Inka Upendo is a musician and producer who crafts unique soundscapes of intertwined percussion, ethereal vocals, found sounds and synthesizers.

Her first track - Limbo, was released last year, and almost immediately found support on BBC Introducing in Devon & Cornwall. Since then her music has been spreading throughout Finland and the UK. Also a member of Eel, a record label and collective based in Cornwall founded by Hockeysmith, Inka released Mellow as part of the collective's debut compilation earlier this year.

As of April, Inka has signed with new music company archForm, and will be releasing a debut EP in September. The songs revolve around the contrasts in her production style, whilst exploring themes such as the feeling of inadequacy, the absurdity of love and the ubiquity of capitalism.

Peggy Sue are London-via-Brighton indie duo Rosa Slade and Katy Young. Founded in 2007, the band have released three albums on Wichita Recordings, culminating in 2014's critically acclaimed 'Choir Of Echoes', and toured with the likes of Jack White, Local Natives and First Aid Kit.

'Slow Fade' is the first single from Peggy Sue's upcoming fourth album. After a three year break - during which Rosa Slade and Katy Young have been performing with all-female singing group Deep Throat Choir - 'Slow Fade' is an apt comeback; a melancholy celebration of patience. It is a dreamy breakup song, one that let's you hang around lazily in the days when you aren't ok yet.

The single - and upcoming album- borrow in equal parts from the perfectly-constructed pop songs of the 1960s and   the understated, noisey guitar experiments of 90s indie bands such as The Breeders and Blur. The new material sees front-women Slade and Young joined by Dan Blackett (Landshapes) on drums and Benjamin Gregory (GRIP TIGHT) on bass who bring a fresh energy and clarity to the band's enduringly captivating duel vocals. 

DEEP THROAT CHOIR

Deep Throat Choir has been going since 2013, formed by Luisa Gerstein, we started with a simple desire to get together once a week and raise our voices together, to strip music down to just vocals and drums, to rework the words and melodies of other artists like Sylvan Esso, Electrelane, Wildbirds and Peacedrums, MK, and write our own music.

There were five to begin with and now we are thirty. Singing together every week, usually in a circle, is still the most important thing we do. We write together, put on our own shows and nights, perform and collaborate with other artists.

Raised on a Peabody Estate in Waterloo, Bower was more interested in football and friends in his younger years until he stumbled across his calling. “I used to have a piano at my grandparents that I’d fiddle about with as a really young kid,” he remembers, “but it wasn’t until I was like 14 that I started to give it a proper go.” Tinkering away during music lessons at school, reworking indie classics into piano-led versions, he quickly caught onto the freeform creativity that music afforded him.

Moving from piano to acoustic guitar, Luke began self-teaching his way around structure and form. A last-minute call from the prestigious Brit School, just five weeks before term was due to start, took that ambition further still. “I’d forgotten all about the Brit School!” he admits, “but they called up like, ‘Someone’s dropped out, do you wanna step in?”. Naturally, Luke seized the opportunity, where he was able to cut his teeth and learn the play bass and get to grips with electronic production elements, paving the way for his future sound.

Early bands saw him playing shows at South London hotspots like the Amersham Arms and Off The Cuff, alongside everyone from punk groups like Shame and HMLTD to new wave jazz pioneers like Moses Boyd and Poppy Ajudha.

From there, Luke became embedded in that scene. A frequent face – both on-stage and in the crowd – at shows in South London’s low-key jazz joints Steez and Brainchild, he caught early, embryonic versions of “so many of the bands that are killing it now.” He began inviting them into practise rooms and shared spaces, collaborating on whatever sounds came forth. “It was really chaotic,” he laughs, “but great for knowing how to work with other musicians – how to be tested. You’d have to bring your A-game.”. Cut to 2017 and Luke was playing lead guitar in Puma Blue and bass with Nilufer Yanya as part of their world-touring live bands.

Now, Luke is breaking out of his comfort zone. Turning down world tours and setting aside three months at the start of 2019 to go into the studio, the result is a more focused vision from the musical polymath. New singles ‘Crucial’ and ‘Adonis’ are lushly arranged cuts of future-facing, jazzy pop production. Building on the steady foundation of last summer’s ‘Vol. 1’ EP, it’s evidence that Luke’s years of digesting the scenes and sounds around him has led to something special. “With this next EP, it’s less about what I have to say, and more what I want to say. The different sounds and vibes on it are exactly what I want to be making. It’s a really nice feeling.”

MAYA LAW

Maya Law is a fiery 19 year old singer songwriter with a big voice. She’s gained support from BBC Radio 1xtra, Radio 1, Amazing Radio and Radio 2 alongside love  from The Tipping Point, Record of the Day, Somewhere Soul, The Line of Best Fit and Earmilk among many others. She is one of Huw Stephens Tips for 2019 and is being championed nationally by her local BBC Introducing team. Law’s live set currently consists of two parts, in which she uses her vocals and acoustic guitar before moving into her unique gritty version of neo-soul style using an old ghetto blaster and mpc.

NADIA TEHRAN

Born in Jönköping, Sweden to immigrant Iranian parents, Tehran is a rebel by blood. Her father served on the frontline of the Iran-Iraq War. His stories of the revolution inform Tehran’s art and anarchist spirit. As a child Tehran started performing as her own form of rebellion. By 12 years old, she was singing in the only punk band in her small Christian town. Tehran continued to gain notoriety within the underground Swedish scene, securing a place for herself as a solo artist on indie label YEAR0001 (Yung Lean, V**gra Boys). Her 2016 EP Life Is Cheap, Death Is Free released to critical acclaim, with i-D Magazine calling it a “powerful statement on race and immigration.” Tehran has performed around the world at legendary Berlin nightclub Berghain, Sonar Festival, Chicago, New York and more. Dozakh: All Lovers Hell (Releasing on May 16th) is Tehran’s first studio album.

MERELY

In ancient stories, fairy tales and mythology, different tropes are often used to symbolise the powers found within all of us; for example, The King and Queen represents internal struggle and justice, and The Warrior represents courage and willpower. On the other hand, The Wizard is more ambiguous and represents the esoteric sides of the human psyche - insight, spiritual growth, a kind of messenger between worlds.

If Merely’s first two albums “Nirvana” and “Uncanny Valley” were her manifestations of The Warrior and The Queen, “Hatching The Egg” is The Wizard - a new incarnation, imagining her as the lead singer in a super group composed of the best renderings of her past self, all disguised as fable animals and creatures from the other side; an album painted with a palette of psychedelic, dreamy pop, shoegaze, chamber music and subtle hints of progressive rock.

Femi is a DJ and visual artist from Stockholm, where she’s been organising and hosting countless clubs and events over the past couple of years and is currently working with playlist curation and talent scouting at Swedish record label YEAR0001.Her sets are distinguished by fusing esoteric club sounds from various eras into a melodic blend of blissful electronic euphoria.

ECCO2K

Vogue has described him as a “Stylish Multi-Hyphenate” coming from a background in film and image-making who is now gaining attention in music as a songwriter and vocalist. While his fans obsess and theorise online over his unpredictable releases and overall lack of public transparency, Drain Gang member Zak Arogundade has quietly established himself as a curator and creator of an ever-evolving style of audiovisual expression amplified by the highly vibrant yet unclassifiable nature of his persona who’s influence extends into a variety of creative fields.

Since leaving his day job as a footwear designer in 2018 he has been alternating between work on his own label g’LOSS, directing and editing visuals for artists like Bladee and Yves Tumor, and attending London and Paris fashion weeks as both runway model and jury member, while hard at work developing the next phase of his musical output under his stage name ECCO2K with studio sessions in Stockholm, Berlin, and Los Angeles.

On December 23. 1999, roughly a week before the whole world was destroyed by the Y2K problem, Icelandic electronic band múm released Yesterday was Dramatic Today is OK.

On the evening of that day the band stood outside of a shop on the main street of Reykjavík selling the album to rushing christmas shoppers. But it wasn’t until later, when the album got its second release in 2000 and then the subsequent international release in 2001, that the albums ripples began to be felt.

“Sublime and gorgeous” Pitchfork said in their review, calling it “one of the most deeply, purely emotionally affecting albums of the year.” The Guardian called it "passionate and gorged with special talent“ in their 5/5 review. In 2005 the album was performed live in its entirety at the Barbican in London as part of the ATP curated Don’t Look Back series.

This year sees the 20 year anniversary of this innovative and influential album, with a special vinyl release and a short tour to celebrate.

GYDA VALTYSDOTTIR

Gyda Valtysdottir has been active as a musician since her early teens when she co-founded the experimental pop-group múm in the late 1990's. Leaving the band after the release of Finally We Are No One to focus on her further musical studies in Reykjavik, St. Petersburg and Basel, she graduated with a double masters degree from the Hochschule für Musik in Basel where her main teachers were cellist and composer Thomas Demenga and violist, composer and improviser Walter Fähndrich.

Her long list of collaborators include Josephine Foster, Kronos Quartet, Colin Stetson, Skúli Sverrisson, Ólöf Arnalds, Jónsi, Úlfur Hansson, Ben Frost, Dustin O´Halloran, Winged Victory for the Sullen, Damien Rice, Aaron & Bryce Dessner, visual-artist Ragnar Kjartansson and cult-film creator Guy Maddin, just to name few.

Gyda has created music for films, installations, dance, among many other creative ventures, possessing a rare range of musical experiences which creates a unique alchemical compound. Her first solo album, Epicycle, was released worldwide in 2017 to great acclaim, for example winning Album of the Year at the prestigious Iceland Music Awards. The album is a collection of recloaked gems of classical repertoire through the last 2000 years.

GIRLPOOL

The music Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad release as Girlpool occupies a transient space. Their constant evolution makes it perfectly impossible to articulate exactly where their project falls within the contemporary musical canon; this is one of the many reasons Girlpool’s music is so captivating.

Never before has a group’s maturation been so transparently attached to the maturation of its members. This is due in large part to the fact that Girlpool came into existence exactly when Girlpool was supposed to come into existence: at the most prolific stage of the digital revolution. Both online and in the flesh, Tividad and Tucker practice radical openness to the point where it may even engender discomfort; this is exactly the point where it becomes clear why theirs’ is such a special project: they accept the possibility of discomfort—Chaos—and show you how to figure out why you might feel it. This is achieved through their ability to empathize as best friends and partners in creation, with the intention of making music that provokes.

They met in November of 2013, and released their self-titled EP just 3 months later. Both were playing in multiple bands at the time. Harmony was 18. Cleo was 17.

The growth they have fostered in one another over the years explains the project’s disparate discography; each record is a photograph of Girlpool, growing over time. Their roots are a certain shade of punk—organized chaos dressed as earworms. “Where You Sink,” one of the first singles off their upcoming record, What Chaos Is Imaginary, gives you an idea of how much things have changed since 2014.

LAZY DAY

Lazy Day began in 2014 as the solo bedroom project of Tilly Scantlebury. After recording her songs in her makeshift bedroom studio, news about Lazy Day spread so quickly that she put together her now four-piece band. Joined by Beni Evans on drums, Liam Hoflay on lead guitar and Kris Lavin on bass, the warmth and energy they have onstage as a unit is infectious. Everyone's invited to the party, nobody is left out.
