LONNIE HOLLEY

The expansive American experience Lonnie Holley quilts together across his astounding new album, MITH, is both multitudinous and finely detailed. Holley's self-taught piano improvisations and stream-of-consciousness lyrical approach have only gained purpose and power since he introduced the musical side of his art in 2012 with Just Before Music, followed by 2013's Keeping a Record of It. But whereas his previous material seemed to dwell in the Eternal-Internal, MITH lives very much in our world - the one of concrete and tears; of dirt and blood; of injustice and hope.

Across these songs, in an impressionistic poetry all his own, Holley touches on Black Lives Matter ("I'm a Suspect"), Standing Rock ("Copying the Rock") and contemporary American politics ("I Woke Up in a Fucked-Up America"). A storyteller of the highest order, he commands a personal and universal mythology in his songs of which few songwriters are capable - names like Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Joanna Newsom and Gil Scott-Heron come to mind.

MITH was recorded over five years in locations such as Porto, Portugal; Cottage Grove, Oregon; New York City and Holley's adopted hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. These 10 songs feature contributions from fellow cosmic musician Laraaji, jazz duo Nelson Patton, visionary producer Richard Swift, saxophonist Sam Gendel and producer/musician Shahzad Ismaily.

Melbourne four-piece Jade Imagine offer a stunningly seamless blend of synthwave and art-rock. Before founding Jade Imagine, front-person and key songwriter Jade McInally had been a stalwart of the indie scene for more than a decade. After winding her way to Melbourne from somewhere consistently sunny, McInally cut her live-performer teeth with her own electro project Tantrums, before playing in the bands of local favourites Jess Cornelius (Teeth and Tongue) and Jess Ribeiro.

After a spot of bedroom recording in 2016, McInally sent a bunch of the first Jade Imagine demos to Dave Mudie (drummer and Courtney Barnett-collaborator). Mudie not only gave them the thumbs up, but took the liberty of laying down some drums and steered pre-production. Buoyed by the outcome, McInally set about gathering band members: presently, the lineup revolves around producer/guitarist Tim Harvey (Emma Louise, Real Feelings) and James Harvey (Teeth and Tongue) on drums.

After signing with local tastemakers Milk! Records, Jade Imagine’s debut EP ‘What the Fuck Was I Thinking’ was released in April 2017. Steered by her management team at Our Golden Friend, led by Lorrae McKenna, the release was beloved by both audiences and critics: Rolling Stone Australia described the lo-fi gem ‘Stay Awake’, one of the EP’s singles, as “a shimmering summer-invite track”, its lowkey, lethargic, insomniac energy perfect for an impossibly hot afternoon.

Following a landmark year as an artist, producer and live performer, Sega Bodega has released ‘U Suck’ - his most distinctive and personal song to date - and revealed he is currently finishing his first full-length project.

‘U Suck’ comes at the tail-end of Sega Bodega's busiest and most successful year yet. Following the release of Autumn 2018’s acclaimed self*care project, Bodega sold out London's Hoxton Hall with his 'bedroom' live show, going on to tour the show across Europe and Asia.

Bodega has continued to develop as a producer and songwriter as well as an artist in his own right. He worked extensively with Brooke Candy on her debut album SEXORCISM, and has produced recent singles for oklou, Shygirl, Cosima, Quay Dash and Col3trane - with some of his biggest placements still to come.

Australian, psych-rock luminaries Stonefield, have hit the ground running with a busy, and very exciting 2019. As they wrap up their first tour of the year, supporting King Tuff on his North American dates, the band has announced they will be entering the studio with King Gizzard's Stu Mackenzie and Joey Walker for the follow-up LP to last year's Far From Earth (Flightless), as well as a UK/EU Tour in May and June. The tour includes several festival stops including Desertfest, The Great Escape, Maifeld Derby and Tomavistas.

Their third studio LP, Far From Earth, was released earlier this year on King Gizzard's Flightless Records via Inertia Music. The release has kept them in demand and on the road, with 2018 tours that included a headlining run in their native Australia, a sold-out leg with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, a Los Angeles residency at the Bootleg Theater, and a headlining tour of Europe and the UK.

PURPLE PILGRIMS

Psychic sisterhood and wistful wanderlust are the twin energies feeding lush ceremonial dream-pop duo Purple Pilgrims - AKA multi-instrumentalist, home producers Valentine and Clementine Nixon. Raised itinerantly in Hong Kong and on New Zealand’s South Island, with deep backgrounds in folk music (their great-grandfather Davie Stewart was recorded by Alan Lomax), the sisters adapted by devising their own telepathic inner worlds. After the Christchurch earthquake of 2011 leveled their home they migrated to the North Island, crashing with friends and sleeping in cars, eventually returning to China, where they began performing crouched sets of gauzy, angelic noise.

Subsequent tours of Europe and America alongside Yek Koo, Gary War and Ariel Pink helped hone their sprawling, choral haze into leaner, more mantric forms. To record their first full-length LP Eternal Delight, the Pilgrims sequestered themselves in Tapu, on the western side of the Coromandel Peninsula of NZ, in a shed surrounded by native palms and birds. The isolation, stars, and river nightswimming evidently soaked into the music – all 10 tracks radiate spectral feeling and wide-eyed sensuality. In 2018 Purple Pilgrims collaborated with legendary Antipodean guitarist Roy Montgomery (The Pin Group) on his album Suffuse, alongside some of the era’s most compelling women singers (Grouper, Circuit des Yeux, Julianna Barwick), the sisters lending their voices and lyricism to his enveloping sound.

SOFIA WOLFSON

Stumbling down the narrow hallway of her family’s Los Angeles home, Sofia Wolfson took her first steps to her dad strumming “Norwegian Wood” on his Taylor Guitar. She was surrounded by music from the beginning: the rooms and hallways always lined with a variety of instruments from guitars to dulcimers, basses to shakers. Wolfson picked up the guitar at age 6, began writing her own songs by age 9, and played her first show when she was thirteen, a pimply high school freshman singing about homework woes, boy troubles and the overwhelming feeling of growing up. During her years at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, though a theater major, she continued writing and performing music, taking lessons learned from her department about performance and delivery.

Raised on a crowded West Hollywood intersection, Los Angeles has always been a central character in Wolfson’s music, whether she draws her inspiration from her morning hike up to the Observatory with her dog Gulliver, or from conversations she overhears while walking through her neighborhood. Her musical influences range from Joni Mitchell to Blake Mills, The Band to Fiona Apple, music she was introduced to by her dad on long car rides north to visit family.

Louis Cole is a Los Angeles based singer songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist. Celebrated as one of the world's most future-sonic-funk drummers and co-founder of KNOWER, his mission is “to create deep feelings through music.” Cole has proudly been DIY to date, amassing millions of views with his viral videos like ‘Bank Account’, and arrives with his third album debut ‘Time’ out now on Brainfeeder.

‘Time’ is - a casual but addictive LP, with a blend of quickfire, hook-laden electro-funk bullets and wistful, soft-focus balladry - and it’s compelling. "A lot of it is little thoughts, that I made into big songs… blasts of inspiration that I was lucky enough to receive.”

Louis’s new album features his friend Thundercat (with whom he worked on “Drunk” co-writing ‘Bus In The Streets’ and ‘Jameel’s Space Ride’) who returns the favour, contributing lead vocals on ‘Tunnels In The Air’. KNOWER’s Genevieve Artadi, and acclaimed jazz pianist and experimental composer Brad Mehldau also pop up on ‘When You’re Ugly’ and ‘Real Life’ respectively. Furthermore, ‘Last Time You Went Away’ features a 23-piece string orchestra - the Rochester Stringz from Eastman School of Music.

Squirrel Flower is the alias 22-year-old Ella Williams adopted for herself when writing songs and poetry as a child. Coming from a professional musical family spanning generations, Williams has always been surrounded by music. By 14 she started writing more seriously and released her first EP of folk music under her own name. After immersing herself in the DIY scene of her Boston hometown before moving to Iowa to study Art + Gender, Women’s, & Sexuality studies at Grinnell college, she found a more experimental sound, linking her choral roots, classical harmony and ethereal chord structures, and released her first EP as Squirrel Flower, "Early Winter Songs From Middle America." her second EP, Contact Sports, is a perfectly formed collection of songs about relationships; intimacy, dependency, betrayal and geography, set to the backdrop of the American Midwest. The songs represent push and pull of love and intimacy while also being meditations on place. From the fulsome guitar and visceral, cathartic breakdown of lead single ‘Conditions’ to the carefully layered beauty of ‘Hands Melt’, this varied collection frequently impresses with its maturity and craftsmanship. Tracks like the fuzzy, dimly-lit euphoria of ‘Daylight Savings’ are spellbinding in their turn of phrase as Williams sings “I know we’ve gained an hour, but I feel like we’ve lost two”.

Devour marks the fourth full-length record from New York City based artist Margaret Chardiet’s project Pharmakon and the most intense output of her 12 plus years creating industrial noise. Like her previous albums, Devour comes with a strong concept that is exorcised throughout the five demolishing tracks on the album, using imagery and language of self-cannibalism as allegory for the self-destructive nature of humans. Each of the five songs echoes a stage of grief associated with this cyclical chamber of self-destruction and the chaos surrounding us that leads us to devour ourselves in an attempt to balance the agony.

The album was recorded by Ben Greenberg (Uniform) and is the first Pharmakon album recorded live in studio. The A and B sides were each recorded as a continuous take with vocals from start to finish, marking a totally new process for the artist that allows the ferocity and immediacy of her live performance to resonate throughout. Devour also explores new sonic territory, with denser electronics, groovier hooks, and moments of her most unhinged vocal deliveries to date. As one of the premiere vanguards of modern industrial and power electronics, Chardiet continuously pushes the genres and everyone involved in them, and with the release of Devour, she has once again changed the game.

From the first jangling sunshine chords on opening track ‘Mango’, Silver Dollar Moments announces itself as a proper piece of indie pop goodness. Then, across 45 minutes, it takes all kinds of turns, into ESG-ish yips and funk, dreamy-arch harmonies, disco synth-pows and stoner bongos, unsettling submerged voices - with all that and more it still flows like a fountain of indie pop, fresh and catchy and altogether.

Maybe one reason it all coheres so beautifully is that The Orielles are a close-knit unit: two sisters and their best mate. “We met Henry at a house party a few years ago,” says Sid. “I mean, it’s a bit lamer than that sounds. It was a friend of our parents, she was having a 40th birthday party, and we went along, and Henry was there too, with his parents.” They’ve been writing songs together ever since, Esme singing and on bass, Sidonie on drums, Henry on guitar. They’ve played live all over the UK as well as Europe and North America, and this year they signed to Heavenly Recordings and headed into Eve Studios in Stockport.

In the studio right alongside them was Marta Salogni, possibly the most beloved producer in the western world at the moment, who’s also worked recently with Liars, Kelela, Björk and The Moonlandingz. “Marta is mint,” say the band. “She’s fucking sick.”

On the album, they expanded their skillsets: “There’s loads of percussion - bongos, cowbell, allsorts,” says Sidonie. “Henry plays the Hammond organ, and a Fender Rhodes, a Minimoog, a normal piano, and a glockenspiel.” Some of this was prompted by Salogni: “We got stoned and she played a 20-minute synth set and we just sat there watching it, like, whoah,” says Henry. “It was literally one of the best pieces of music I’ve ever witnessed live,” says Esme. There’s flute on the album, too, from Lucy Power, who came in last minute and improvised on ‘Henry’s Pocket’. “We got to make music on all these beautiful instruments that they’ve collected over the years at Eve,” says Henry. “It was inspiring, really. We were sad to leave.”

The songs are also inspired by cinema, literature and physiological details of domestic animals. “So many pop songs are about relationships or growing up or whatever,” they say. “We wanted to write a few songs that make people think, What the hell is that about?”

When Alex Stephens (A.K.A. Strawberry Guy) self-released his debut single last year, he was merely doing it out of a love for songwriting. What he wasn't expecting was a million Youtube streams and an avid fanbase. Now, the South-Wales born, Liverpool-based songwriter is ready to release a full EP of his compelling, lushly produced dream-pop.

Born outside Cardiff, Strawberry Guy moved to Liverpool to study music and grow as a writer. 'I knew that it was a very artistic city with all it’s creative history, it seemed like the perfect place to move to.'  he says. Whether it's playing keyboards in The Orielles or just being part of the city's growing musical scene, Alex plays music for the love of music, something that heavily translates into his adept songwriting.

'I put out the first single ‘Without You’ on Soundcloud not really expecting much from it.'  he explains, speaking to us about his journey to this release. 'To actually have a fanbase now from it is surprising and amazing.'  These passionate supporters are already strong in number & character and Youtube is becoming increasingly filled with various fan-made videos for his tracks.

Bridging the gap between the luscious twanging of Americana and the sweeping echoes of indie pop, Welsh born John James Davies’ lovechild L.A.PEACH is anything but mundane. Drawing on his innate sense for storytelling, the London based qualified football coach has a daring approach when it comes to his songwriting: bold, charming and gritty all wrapped in a sheath of resplendent pop melodies that burst with extroverted intelligence.

Following a string of sold out London shows at Blondies, The Social and The Shackelwell Arms, a UK tour with Oxford’s Lacuna Common and the release of their latest EP Come On Over And Test Me (released via Sad Club Records), the predominately Welsh band are now gearing up to record their very first album!

Peggy Sue are London-via-Brighton indie duo Rosa Slade and Katy Young. Founded in 2007, the band have released three albums on Wichita Recordings, culminating in 2014's critically acclaimed 'Choir Of Echoes', and toured with the likes of Jack White, Local Natives and First Aid Kit.

'Slow Fade' is the first single from Peggy Sue's upcoming fourth album. After a three year break - during which Rosa Slade and Katy Young have been performing with all-female singing group Deep Throat Choir - 'Slow Fade' is an apt comeback; a melancholy celebration of patience. It is a dreamy breakup song, one that let's you hang around lazily in the days when you aren't ok yet.

The single - and upcoming album- borrow in equal parts from the perfectly-constructed pop songs of the 1960s and   the understated, noisey guitar experiments of 90s indie bands such as The Breeders and Blur. The new material sees front-women Slade and Young joined by Dan Blackett (Landshapes) on drums and Benjamin Gregory (GRIP TIGHT) on bass who bring a fresh energy and clarity to the band's enduringly captivating duel vocals.

MAYRA ANDRADE

Mayra’s singing is a blend of radiant, dancing colors, velvet beats and spicy melodies. Her voice is subtly seasoned with pepper, as if the Europe of pop had always been a tropical archipelago. The songs conjure up an eternal summer that disperses the mists and chills, but never resort to the tinsel of exoticism. Sung in Cape Verdean creole, English and Portuguese, they carry us away in their warm, adventurous unpredictability. Mayra’s pop spans the world’s entire vast sweep from Western romanticism to Southern sensuality, and domestic reggae to African 3/4 time. It is topical, tropical, traveling pop. Her aim was simply to make 'music that reflected my life'.

And her life has been very colorful. Her father fought for Cape-Verdean independence, a struggle supported by Cuba. When there were fears for his wife’s health during pregnancy, she left to have her child in the 'brother country'. So Mayra was born in Havana. She spent her early childhood in Praia, Cape Verde. Then, at the age of six, she went with her mother and diplomat stepfather to Senegal, Angola and Germany. When she returned to Cape Verde at the age of forteen, she began to sing and won a gold medal at the 2001 Francophone Games contest in Ottawa.

DEVON WELSH

Can music make you feel less alone? Can it foster intimacy from afar? In his stark songs, which are like sonic poems, the Canadian artist Devon Welsh has mined such questions with rigor, vulnerability, and grace. From 2010 to present, his body of work has pushed language to the fore in service of closing the space between artist and listener, prizing human connection above all.

With his duo Majical Cloudz, Welsh found a huge audience for that vision: he released two critically-acclaimed LPs with Matador Records, and went from DIY house-show tours to playing arenas with Lorde. Moreover, Welsh created life-affirming moments: on-stage, he looked people in the eye—blurring the line between music and performance art—and could bewilder listeners or make them cry. But after disbanding Majical Cloudz in 2016, Welsh retreated to take stock of his purpose as an artist. He shifted his relationship with music. His solo album, ​Dream Songs​, arrived in 2018, rescaling the pulsing heart of his work with arresting orchestral arrangements.

In the wake of ​Dream Songs​, Welsh has taken stock once again. Leaving his longtime home of Montreal, the Ontario-born artist moved to rural Wisconsin to recalibrate still. Recording in a basement studio and embracing a quieter, simpler life, he worked on his emotional health through meditation and therapy. His newest music is in ways a product of those introspective focuses.

When Poliça’s Channy Leaneagh fell off her roof while clearing ice in early 2018, she smashed her L1 vertebrae and battered her spine, leaving her in a brace with limited mobility for months. Yet Poliça’s fourth album, ​When We Stay Alive​, is not about one debilitating accident. It’s about the redemptive power of rewriting your story in order to heal, and reclaiming your identity as a result.
While recovering, Leaneagh’s doctor told her to focus not only on physical healing, but to meditate on the mental act of healing as well – working to erase the anger, regrets, and fear she felt about her fall. To do so, he suggested she rewrite the story she told herself about what happened on February 28th. Left alone with her thoughts and her back fully braced, Leaneagh would visualize herself slipping and falling not onto cement, but instead onto a cloud, landing safely before breaking into a sprint over snow melting to reveal tall blades of green grass. As she felt the positive effects of this mental exercise, she set about doing the same for other injuries and pains that she gripped onto from her past.

Prior to Leaneagh’s accident, she had been setting music aside as she raised her children and worked to make ends meet as a nursing assistant. Now in the still silence of healing, she found that a multitude of feelings were becoming very loud. Leaneagh realized her self-identity had become attached to her experiences of physical and mental trauma, and she began to consider what it would be like to live without the past as a burden. “I felt there were many things I could look at and say, ‘This happened to me but I’m okay now. It’s not happening anymore and I got the care I needed for it. Now it’s time to rewrite the story I tell about myself and to myself,’" she explains.

While half of ​When We Stay Alive​ was written before the fall, and half afterwards, the tracks meld together in a coherent and redemptive sonic whole. Those written before the fall relay ideas with a more heightened sense of anxiety and distress: the rousing “Forget Me Now” interrogates what makes two people bring out the worst in each other, while on the soulful “Steady,” Leaneagh struggles with the sudden pressure of becoming the head of her immediate family after her parents moved away. “TATA” was inspired by the challenge of keeping a cool head in the face of tense community meetings where anger continues to rise against Northern Metals, a north Minneapolis company under fire for pollution issues.

Inspired by the power found in her healing process, on the second batch of songs Leaneagh tried a slightly different approach, working to reevaluate her past, difficult personal experiences and bring in a sense of insight, strength, and light that perhaps wasn’t there at the time. The stirring “Feel Life” captures Leaneagh’s process of recasting pain as an alarm to live and see beyond what we lack. She takes back her sense of self on the haunting “Be Again,” a song recorded as she relearned to sing while wearing a brace. “For me this song is a meditation to myself,” Leaneagh explains. “To come back from the disassociation I’ve lived with most of my life.” “Blood Moon” sees her examining how keeping this sort of guard up can prove more precariously isolating than protective. “I can look back and see how music has always been here for me to be loud, say what I feel and ask for what I need in these songs I write,” she says. “I always find my courage again on the stage – that is where I feel alive, and for that I am eternally grateful for music and the people that I make it with.”

When We Stay Alive​ possesses a new confidence in its sound, reflected in its fierce, determined songs and anchored by the heavy synths and punctuating beats of Poliça co-founder and producer Ryan Olson. Over the last several years Olson and Leaneagh have widely collaborated with musicians from all over the world: both with Bon Iver, and Leaneagh individually with Boys Noize, Lane 8, Sasha, Leftfield, and Daniel Wohl; Olson with Swamp Dogg in addition to countless musicians from the 37d03d collective. As a result, ​When We Stay Alive​ features one of the largest musical casts of any Poliça record to date. To create the album, Olson brought his favorite collaborators into his studio for all-night sessions. He’d then send Leaneagh the files to write lyrics to while recovering at home, which she’d record alone or with engineer Alex Proctor. Drummers Drew Christopherson and Ben Ivascu colored the songs with a new approach – drastically changing the rhythmic dynamic from previous efforts by creating an indistinguishable hybrid of live and electronic instrumentation--and bassist Chris Bierden provided a melody-laden low-end as well as more layered backing vocals than ever before.

On Poliça’s first three albums, Leaneagh focused on restructuring the world and her relationships within it. On W​hen We Stay Alive,​ she realizes the power in restructuring her inner self.​ The album’s title references the idea of moving forward through life – our experiences, both good and bad – and what happens next with the strength we find. “I had been living unconsciously in past trauma,” Leaneagh says. “I don’t want to deny something happened – this is not about repression – it’s about taking the power back from the past, holding the power in the present, and creating a new story for myself.”

M. T. Hadley’s debut album Empty is a hopeless pop masterpiece. The first single, “Rattle”, was written in 2011. The whole record takes us on a journey through the 2010s, a decade of misery and decline. Here are nine songs in the key of accepting pain.

Martin grew up in North London and went to a primary school in Islington with a boat in the playground instead of a climbing frame. He had piano lessons and guitar lessons. But why should we create anything at all, he wondered? Later he attended Stoke Newington School, where he played in a swing band led by a man who pretended he’d fought in the War. He remembers watching Labrinth make a song on Cubase VST there and feeling blown away. He joined an indie band, and they were managed by a man who needed to launder some money. Martin’s favourite philosopher is Plato.

Aged 16, Martin moved to Camden School for Girls so that he could study classical civilization, and saw an Ancient Greek pot for the first time in his life. The graceful outline of a lekythos vase, which would originally have been used for storing perfumed oil, but today remains empty, now decorates the inside cover of his record. He finds it odd that we look for meaning in Greek vases when they’re always empty. Empty, he says, is how people often feel. He hopes his record makes listeners feel worse, and then better; but worse to begin with. He doesn’t think anybody can ever feel better without feeling worse beforehand. In his first year at Camden, Martin thought, “Oh I’ve met all of these people and it’s really exciting.” In his second year he realised how much of a horrible place it was to be, but found his own Shangri-La hiding out in the practice room with a music technology teacher named Thor who spent all his time on David Icke’s website. Thor would say, “Alright Martin,” and he’d say, “Yeah,” and Thor would say, “Martin, promise me you won’t ever take Tamiflu won’t you?” It was from this man that he learnt to program hi-hats.

After school, Martin left his band and went to study philosophy at Birkbeck. During his last year of university, his mother passed away. The next few years are a blur. His first and only hit, “Janet”, from 2016, is a heartfelt ode to her. When he shared the song, his old money-laundering manager commented, “I might hang myself.” Strangers write to Martin all the time to talk about their own loss. The forthcoming video for “Janet”, shot by artist Ciarán Wood, revisits Martin’s childhood holiday home of Wheal Freedom and is at the same time beautiful and brutally sad.

Empty begins with “Reticence”, co-produced by Lewis Roberts (Koreless), which is a version of another song from the album, “Reticent”. Martin shares a studio with Lewis in Hackney Wick, a place he detests. Upstairs are some South African techno DJs he won’t talk to. He likes to ride the overground to Westfield Stratford and dine alone in the World Food Hall, at Comptoir Libanais, or Crepeaffair, or Los Iguanas, or Tossed, there in the shadows of Boris’s twisting red tower. He’d like to be a concierge in a beautiful hotel: “A weird person that knows everything but is also subservient.” The original song, “Reticent”, is a critique of people who compliment strangers in bars. His sound is best described as beached whales singing to one another on the sand, tummies bloated with plastic bottles and coffee cup lids.

Other album highlights include “Private Eye”, about hiring a private eye who falls in love with the woman he's supposed to be spying on in Mexico; “First Floor”, inspired by a Chris Morris sketch about someone who wants to jump 40 times from a first-floor balcony rather than once from a very tall building in case they change their mind. This is a song about failing to die. Another highlight is “Roof Party”, which opens with the line, “I don’t have a body, and I don’t have a soul.” “Roof Party” is inspired by the philosophical concept of mereological nihilism, which claims that nothing is a proper part of anything, and sounds like pure joy.

Martin has written with musicians like Tobias Jesso Jr., Nilüfer Yanya, Metronomy, and Jai and A. K. Paul. He claims that James Blake and Frank Ocean like his music. He loves Joan Armatrading, Todd Rundgren, Scott Walker and Stevie Wonder. His video for “Rattle”, directed by Jacek Zmarz, is out now. All of Martin’s videos tell a story of their own, a slightly different story to the songs, and have subtitles so that they can be watched without music. “They just take up more space on a website,” he says, “that’s why people like music videos. They’re just bullshit, boring.”

More expansive and ambitious than ever before, Gengahr are a band reborn. A testament to going it alone, Sanctuary is the experimental North London alt-pop four-piece’s finest body of work to date, a DIY triumph which welcomes old friend Jack Steadman of Bombay Bicycle Club as producer, adding his distinct brand of symphonic sparkle to Gengahr’s complex, layered sound. 

Born of an epic journey, the follow-up to their acclaimed 2015 debut A Dream Outside and 2018’s Where Wildness Grows sees songwriter Felix Bushe tapping into personal pain but coming out fighting. “I was picturing myself as Odysseus in this captive journey where I was just trying to get back to where I wanted to be in life,” he explains. After the release of the band’s second album things weren’t easy. Not only did he have to face the sudden passing of his mother, but then the woman who had become his rock returned home to Australia as her visa had run out. “My girlfriend had stopped me from going completely off the rails – then I suddenly found myself basically just on my own.” It was hard going, but Felix channelled his pain into more than 60 new songs. Yet at this stage he wasn’t sure where, what or even who this material was for. “I wrote a lot of that stuff thinking it would be a solo album,” reveals Felix, who, alongside bandmates John Victor, Hugh Schulte and Danny Ward, had no idea if Gengahr were going to get back in the studio. “I didn’t know what the other guys would want to do because the experience of the last album was quite rocky and turbulent.”

Of course it was impossible for any of them to say no to the prospect of doing it all again and while collaborating on the new tracks decided they were down to try something a bit different... Recorded without a label or management and with Gengahr paying for the sessions out of their own pocket, Sanctuary recaptures the magic that the four guys felt back when they were making their debut. It’s vibrant, intoxicating, intimate and alive; the product of friends having a good time and seizing control of their own destiny. As such, it’s also way more banging than anything that has gone before.

Across the previous Slaughter Beach, Dog albums, Jake Ewald has crafted a specific sound. It’s one that incorporates pop music, indie-rock, folk, and just the faintest dash of punk in order to create something that’s accessible but still artistically rich. With Safe And Also No Fear, the band’s third album, Ewald has abandoned his usual practices in service of creating something that, try as one might, isn’t so easy to describe.

In the wake of 2017’s Birdie, an album awash in warm tones and bubbly pop hooks, Safe And Also No Fear can’t help but feel like a turn toward darkness. It’s not one that’s instigated by the outside world—as inescapable as it may be—but instead the dramatic shifts of a person’s interior life. Where Ewald once offered tightly woven vignettes about characters that mirrored the people in his life, Safe And Also No Fear finds him naked at the album’s center, questioning everything he knows about himself. Around him, bassist Ian Farmer, guitarist Nick Harris, and drummer Zack Robbins spin out songs that are dense, swirling amalgams of difficult questions and hard-earned realizations—the kind that can’t be expressed through the accepted structures of pop music.

This isn’t to say there aren’t hooks, as songs like “Good Ones” and “One Day” have effervescent melodies anchoring them, but Safe And Also No Fear generally avoids taking the clear-cut path. As Ewald tells it, that’s a horrifying thing to put out into the world. After putting the finishing touches on the album, he sat down and listened back to the demos he’d first made, then the album itself, and realized it sounded unlike anything he’d ever done before. His creative impulses had changed over the years, and the result was a record that maybe his followers wouldn’t actually like.

Crumb is the collaboration of Brooklyn-based musicians Lila Ramani (guitar, vocals), Brian Aronow (synth, keys, sax), Jesse Brotter (bass), and Jonathan Gilad (drums). The friends came together in 2016 with the goal of developing and recording a collection of songs Ramani had written in high school and college, the work ultimately resulting in the band’s first two EPs, 2016’s “Crumb” and 2017’s “Locket.” Encouraged by the warm reception online and at shows, the band evolved into a full time touring and recording project.In June 2019, Crumb will release Jinx, their first full-length album and best distillation to date of their singular blend of psych-rock and jazz. On Jinx, Ramani continues to helm the songwriting, with Aronow, Brotter, and Gilad each bringing distinctive ideas to match her ethereal, intimate vocals and luminous guitar lines. Informed by two years of nearly non-stop touring, the songs sweep and swell to capture the beguiling live spirit of Crumb shows, while taking listeners one step furtherdown the band’s dizzying, hypnotic path.

Emmanuel Jal: Juno nominated Musician, Actor, and Campaigner releases his 6th studio album ‘NAATH’; a stunning joint collaboration with his hugely talented sister, Nyaruach.

NAATH  is a vivacious, Afrobeat infused album with Emmanuel and Nyaruach drawing strongly on the unique sounds of their country; interweaving traditional folklore and love songs - alongside infectious dance tunes. NAATH is the ancient word for the land and language surrounding the glorious Kingdom of Kush. Carefully choosing this theme - Jal and Nyaruach's music is often at odds with the image of war and poverty that has blighted South Sudan. Instead, both artists choose to reflect upon the resilience and rich culture of their identity through their vibrant tones and messaging. 

From his start in life as a child soldier in the war-torn region of Southern Sudan in the early 1980s, Emmanuel Jal has come through huge personal struggles to become asuccessful and acclaimed recording artist and peace ambassador now living in Toronto, Canada.

Emmanuel's sister Nyaruach was also born in South Sudan at a similar time and was separated from the rest of her immediate family, including Jal, at the age of 4. As years went on, the war intensified, she witnessed her family members killed and was raped by government officials. It wasn't until 2004 that she was finally reunited with Jal in Nairobi. Unfortunately due to renewed violence in South Sudan and threats upon her life, Nyaruach has been forced to live in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya where she has an uncertain future.

Emmanuel and Nyaruach have recorded together on Emmanuel's break out single Gua, which stands for “peace” in their native Nuer tongue which was broadcast by the BBC across Africa and became a hit in Kenya in 2005. The two have since performed together in Kenya for Oxfam and South Sudan for the first of its kind peace concert with Daryl 'DMC' McDaniels organised by Emmanuel's non-profit organisation 'We Want Peace.'

Starcrawler are a truly original young band from the city of Los Angeles. Led by their nineteen year old frontwoman Arrow de Wilde, their take on dark and heavy rock & roll both recorded and through their chaotic live shows, brings such music into the 21st century as an almost transgressive form of pop.

Starcrawler are all LA natives and met in high school. Their self-titled LP was released one year ago in January by Rough Trade Records to rave reviews. Since then, they’ve toured non-stop all over the world, including triumphant sets at Primavera, Rock Am Ring, Download Festival, Voodoo Festival, Fuji Rock, Reading, Leeds and more. In March, they won the 2018 SXSW Grulke prize for best US act after blowing minds at each of their nine shows. They were VEVO DSCVR artists with video testimonial from Shirley Manson who said “I feel like Starcrawler, and in particular Arrow, are really challenging the norms in which women are seen in music.” The amount of support they have received from their fellow artists has been overwhelming. They opened shows for the Foo Fighters at Olympic Park in London, and toured with The Distillers and MC5.

GLOSSII

Glossii, hailed by DIY Magazine as “full of raw, gritty, punk-infused indie-rock" which "barely lets up in energy”, is a four-piece post-punk band created around South London in early 2017 by Charlie Lock and Guitarist Lewis Smith, along with vocalist Sofia Zanghirella and drummer Reuben Rost.

Glossii's hard-hitting riffs and bursts of aggression create the ubiquitous back-beat for Sofia’s femme-fatale lyrical insight- reminiscent of other bands such as Wolf Alice and Garbage with a detection and a nod to the original allure of Blondie.

2018 has been an impressive debut year for the band, performing at Camden Rocks Festival on the Doc Martens stage, supporting HMLTD in Guildford and releasing their debut single: Headache, which has received significant support from Diva Magazine & Amazing Radio.

So far in 2019, Glossii played alongside L.A. Punk bands such as STARCRAWLER and FEELS, as well as supporting, alt-pop duo APRE and LION for NME’s Girls To The Front Gig.

They’ve been recognized by media heavy hitters such as Paper Magazine, Rolling Stone, The FADER, Viceland, Huffington Post, NPR, Essence, and Vogue (just to name a few). They've also performed throughout the U.S. and Brazil all while remaining full-time college students at NYU. It’s been a wonderful journey and now that these young goddesses have graduated college and live on their own, they are transitioning into the next phase of manifesting their purpose. OSHUN is preparing for additional releases of their album series “bittersweet”, complete with captivating visuals, worldwide tour of the US, Canada, Europe, Brazil, and a deeper look into their ever-evolving selves.

Catherine Saint Jude Pretorius was born in Cape Town South Africa. She studied Politics at the University of Cape Town. In 2011 she started South Africa's first documented drag king troupe, performing as Saint Dude.
In 2013, having learnt about performance through drag, she left the group to learn sound production and begin a career as ​Dope Saint Jude​.

In the span of less than 2 years, Saint Jude has rapidly gained international popularity for her ability to speak to various audiences through the Medium of hip-hop. ​Drag King, producer, rapper, hard to put Dope Saint Jude in a genre. With "​Resilient"​ , the native of Cape Town and spokesperson of the queer movement offers us a raw rap and a prod bass music with grunge influences which she has the secret to. ​She ​looks to artists like ​Tupac and ​Riot Grrrl ​for inspiration, but also lists disparate influences — such as ​Queen a​ nd ​Tracy Chapman​— as being foundational to her music education. The young artist has long imagined an alternative music that would represent the marginalized groups in South Africa. Concert after concert, the inexhaustible ​Dope Saint Jude​ ignites audiences with her troupe.

HARVEY CAUSON

Calm and understated, Bristol’s Harvey Causon is turning heads with his deft take on contemporary R&B, percussive electronica and powerful, brooding vocal that sounds far more world wearied than his 20 years. Harvey writes and produces his own tracks, as well as collaborating with producer and flatmate, Gabriel Gifford.

His most recent collaborative releases 'Worn You' and 'Branches' have been playlisted by Radio 1 as the BBC Introducing Track of the Week, played on Radio 1 Prague and added to the Burberry and Radio 1 Spotify playlists. With nods to other contemporary artists James Blake and Jamie Isaac, the ambient piano ballad has a nervous energy but it’s dub tinged rhythm, clever lyrical content and fragile yet soothing vocal set it apart. The pair are set to release the full EP 'Murphy's Hand' at the end of July.

After moving to Bristol last year, Harvey quickly released his ‘Introspect EP’, a collection of songs that he had been sitting on for a while. Eclectic, but polished, the stand out song from the release, ‘Systems’ was given a remix from rising hip hop duo Cabrakid. This earned Harvey an appearance at 'Cabra’s' support slot with Loyle Carner after the rapper heard the track.

In October, Harvey released his single 'Frisson' with local Bristol label Leisure Records. Not only did it gain attention from indieshuffle and Bristol Live but it was described 'an impressively diverse three minutes' for DIY's NEU Pick of the day. It has since hit 250k streams, earned spots on NME and Spotify's 'Office' and 'Left Of Centre' playlists.

Hailing from South London, Nigerian-born singer-songwriter and producer,
Tracy Sada is  making waves of her own, having performed at the likes of Jazz Cafe, o2 Academy Islington and Bush theatre . Her sound is distinct for her soulful voice with an interplay between electronic nuances and live jazz instrumentation. After four years of working as a fashion stylist, she chose to pursue her real dream of making music. She is heavily influenced by various genres and artists including  Erykah Badu (who she penned an ode to on her bandcamp ), Radiohead and afro-fusion/jazz legend, Lagbaja. Her latest single,  Shake It Up, is a soul infused and electronic  track, co produced by Junior XL that will have you giggling on the dance floor.  She is currently working on  her debut EP,  writing  songs about love, childhood  and growing up as an immigrant in her now gentrified city.

On November 8th the Bristolian duo of Robin Stewart and Harry Wright AKA Giant Swan will release their highly anticipated debut album, on their own freshly-minted label, Keck.
In support of the LP release, they have curated a string of gigs and club nights that will give them a chance to present some of their closest allies formed on the road. For their first headline shows in the UK, they will be bringing along friends and fellow audio playmakers Dis Fig, Ossia and Rian Treanor, as well as working with crews in each city to cram these nights with local pedigree.

An uncompromising statement of intent, ‘55 Year Old Daughter’ sets the tone: metallic KO drums and an earworm hook constructed from a scissored vocal sample, the album lurches into life with perhaps the closest the band have come so far to an out-and-out banger. A track that’s simultaneously deconstructed avant-noise and devastating DJ weapon.

Having built a formidable reputation for their hi-octane improvised performances, relentless international touring and a succession of acclaimed EPs on respected imprints such as Whities, Timedance and Mannequin, 'Giant Swan' sees the pair stepping things up significantly, with a full-length musical statement that bristles with the galvanising energy for which they're known while introducing a fresh depth, range and sonic nuance to the equation.

At the same time, they’ve been subverting expectations on the international techno circuit, they’ve also had one foot in a more experimental camp, equally at home playing alongside Moor Mother (for whom they’ve produced a track on the forthcoming Analog Fluids of Sonic Black Holes album) at leftfield arts festivals as they are sending it in at legendary clubs like Berghain and Tresor.

For producer and DJ Felicia Chen (aka Dis Fig), risk-taking and provocation is an integral part of the creative process.

“My aim is to grab my listeners emotionally--pour my soul down their throat and shake every thread of their being,” the Berlin via New York artist says. Among her most iconoclastic productions includes the score to “An Atypical Brain Damage,” an experimental 90-minute pop opera and performance piece by Chinese contemporary artist Tianzhuo Chen, which was subsequently released on the New York collective and experimental label PTP. The work embodies Dis Fig’s musical signatures: murky ambience-meets-horror film soundscapes, derivatives of industrial four-on-the-floor rhythms, and psychologically turbulent themes.

Minneapolis native Your Smith (aka Caroline Smith), relocated to Los Angeles after signing to Pulse Recording (DRAM, Miike Snow, Gallant, et. al). Inspired by the history of Laurel Canyon and moving through a city that’s been immortalized in music throughout the ages, Smith concocted her own sound, bringing together the funk / R&B “Minneapolis Sound” of her roots and the classic songwriting of the LA folk heroes.

Your Smith released her debut EP Bad Habit, in August 2018 on Neon Gold Records (HAIM, Christine & The Queens, et. al) and concluded a US headline tour in September followed by international dates supporting RHYE in winter 2018.

She has resumed collaborating with producer Tommy English (BØRNS, Kacey Musgraves) as well as Alex and Alex, Captain Cuts, and Ethan Gruska (Phoebe Bridgers) to create her sophomore EP, a collection of five songs embodying the essence of a past era, but capturing the perspective of the moment and this current climate of the world.

The upcoming EP, “Wild Wild Woman”, will debut on September 13, released on Neon Gold Records and Liberator (AUS/NZ). “This is an anthem for the wild woman that lives inside us all, begging to be let out...”

Yung Sham is the performance moniker of 19-year-old Philadelphia based songwriter Elijah Sheppard. The project began as a solo recording effort in Sheppard’s early high school years. Inspired by everything from 60s rock and folk stars to cult figures from the 90s to today, Sheppard’s music employs strong melodies and distinct chord structures and deals with themes ranging from loneliness and rejection to love and growth. Sheppard formed the band in 2015 and began performing at independent venues in the Philadelphia DIY community, gaining experience in a music scene that has featured many now prominent acts. In 2016 he self-released his short album “The Passion”, created in collaboration with engineer, song-writer and multi-instrumentalist Scotty Leitch. This year he self-released his debut full-length “World of Color”, created in collaboration with engineer and multi-instrumentalist Josh Lesser and friends.

ALGIERS have released collaborative audiovisual piece, “Can the Sub_Bass Speak?”, a new work from the band and production duo Randall Dunn and Ben Greenberg (Jóhann Jóhannsson's Mandy Soundtrack, Sunn O))), Uniform). The new piece pits charged language and free jazz collage by ALGIERS multi-instrumentalist Franklin James Fisher, saxophonics pioneer Skerik and drummer D’Vonne Lewis against a maelstrom of visuals by award-winning filmmaker Sam Campbell and typographer Farbod Kokabi.

Inspired by a chance encounter with artists Moor Mother and Harrga at Wysing Polyphonic in 2018, “Can the Sub_Bass Speak?” contorts ALGIERS’ post-punk deconstruction of racial and class sonic politics into new collaborative directions. “Can The Sub_Bass Speak?” is the centerpiece of a larger web installation thereisnoyear.com.

The film recalls the ‘visual abstraction’ and political radicalism of Lis Rhodes and John Akomfrah, situating Fisher’s lyrical examination of structural racism within the disorienting resurgence of fascism across Europe and the United States.

Fisher says:
Who has the cultural authority to designate origin and authenticity? “Can the Sub_Bass Speak? “is a frustrated regurgitation; a re-contextualization; a re-appropriation; a shield and a mirror that projects back onto the world a lifetime of interpellating language rooted in weaponized ignorance and supremacist privilege. The improvised punctuation is provided by Skerik on the tenor saxophone and D’Vonne Lewis on drums and percussion. The underlying cacophony traces the evolution of African-American music, experience and identity. This is not for the mercenary architects: the Jacks and Queens of simulated experience. This is for anyone who has found themselves on the sharp end of insidious, rhetorical prying: “Where are you from?” “What are you?” This is for anyone who has had their identity assigned and determined by the agents of patriarchy. This is for the Subaltern.

Alongside, ALGIERS have announced UK & European headline tour dates for 2020, perhaps pointing to more new music to follow soon. Kicking off in Brighton on February 3rd, the band headline London’s Village Underground on February 5th, before continuing to further stops in the UK and Europe.

“hand solo,” “blow,” “conventional ride”—these are just a few of the cheeky offerings off Any Human Friend, the new album from rock provocateur Marika Hackman. “This whole record is me diving into myself and peeling back the skin further and further, exposing myself in quite a big way. It can be quite sexual,” Hackman says. “It’s blunt, but not offensive. It’s mischievous.” There’s also depth to her carnal knowledge: Any Human Friend (out via AMF Records and Sub Pop Records in North and South America) is ultimately about how, as she puts it, “We all have this lightness and darkness in us.”

Hackman lifted the album’s title from a documentary about four-year-olds interacting with dementia patients in senior homes. At one point, two little girls confer about their experience there, with one musing on how it’s great to make “any human friend,” whether old or young. “When she said that it really touched a nerve in me,” says the London-based musician. “It’s that childlike view where we really accept people, are comfortable with their differences.”

Such introspection has earned Hackman her name. Her 2015 debut, We Slept at Last, was heralded for being nuanced and atmospheric. She really found her footing with her last release, I’m Not Your Man—which earned raves from The Guardian, Stereogum, and Pitchfork—and its sybaritic, swaggering hit “Boyfriend,” which boasts of seducing away a straight guy’s girlfriend. “Her tactile lyrics keep the songs melodically strong and full of surprises,” remarked Pitchfork. We’ll say!

“I’m a hopeless romantic,” she explains. “I search for love and sexual experience, but also I’m terrified by it.” Hackman is a Rid of Me-era PJ Harvey for the inclusive generation: unbounded by musical genre, a preternatural lyricist and tunesmith who isn’t afraid to go there. (Even her cover art, which finds Hackman nearly nude while cradling a baby pig, is a nod to Dutch photographer Rineke Dijkstra’s unfiltered photos of mothers just after they gave birth.) To that end, “hand solo” extorts the virtues of masturbation and  features Hackman’s favorite line, “Under patriarchal law, I’m going to die a virgin.” The song “blow” paints a picture of social excess. And “conventional ride” thumbs its nose at heterosexual sex through “the trope a lot of gay women experience: sleeping with someone, then it becomes apparent you’re kind of an experiment.”

The diverse work of legendary singer, composer and transgender activist Beverly Glenn-Copeland has been gathering momentum in recent years thanks to a reissue of the extraordinary folk-jazz explorations of his debut self-titled album (1970) and the widespread discovery of his acclaimed masterpiece Keyboard Fantasies (1986); an ahead-of-it’s-time synth exploration which somehow combines the essence of new-age minimalism, early Detroit techno and the warmth of traditional songwriting.

Throughout a fifty year recording career, Beverly Glenn-Copeland's music has defied categorisation and genre, its only consistency being the extraordinary fusion of vision, technology, spirituality and place.

VELVET NEGRONI

On Neon Brown (out summer 2019 on 4AD), Velvet Negroni is a griot relaying the life and times of his own island—it’s a singular place, with the squeak and thrum of guitar strings looped over drum machine beats accented by steely marimbas, all creating a pocket for one of the most authentic and original artistic voices ever committed to tape.

You follow his voice as it rhymes in double time, or hiccups and la-las through a break, or croons from a room down the hall, as it unfolds into another story of lost love, or another joke about lost drugs, as he tries to make sense of a life spent in the (sometimes harrowing) pursuit of communion.

Turns out what sounds like a lonely island is in fact the city of Minneapolis. Velvet Negroni grew up in an outer suburb of the Twin Cities as Jeremy Nutzman, a black kid adopted into a white evangelical Christian family. His fundamentalist missionary of a mother drove him to virtuosity, both as a classically trained concert pianist and a competitive figure skater, but he had to climb out his bedroom window to play guitar in his first band.

Tony Njoku is a British-Nigerian electronic music producer and songwriter from London. His self-penned and produced songs have been described as ‘strikingly evocative soundscapes, managing to make even the shortest pop songs sound like epic adventures.’

Battles return this autumn with their fourth album Juice B Crypts on Warp Records to follow their complex, mind-bending predecessors Mirrored, Gloss Drop, Dross Glop and La Di Da Di. Their latest album is a sensory overload of information that throws everything you thought you knew about Battles into flux once again.

Battles redefined line-up puts Ian Williams (Keys, Guitar, Electronics) and John Stanier (Drums) at the core of the covertly named Juice B Crypts, which was produced and mixed by Chris Tabron (Trash Talk, Beyonce, Mobb Deep, Ratking). Marrying synthesizer loops, cut-throat drum patterns and cyclical riffs, the album flirts with new technology, questions of authenticity and the technicalities of reinventing the wheel at the eleventh hour.

In true Battles form, the pair have encrypted the album with hidden codes and secret languages that only they know. What does the composer of "Taxi", a semi-modular analog subtractive audio synthesizer, a two cycle gasoline tie drilling machine and a 70's band with fifteen studio and six live albums have to do with Juice B Crypts? One answer Ian points you to is the concept of ‘medium specificity’ coined by New York art critic Clement Greenberg, which valued artists’ abilities to manipulate mediums based on their materiality. Like painters on the vanguard of modernism, Battles apply their medium of choice: intricate arpegios sequenced on an Elektron Octatrack, mind-altering pitch-shifted chord progressions, sixteen-measure time signatures and twisted clues to do the talking. All to be somewhat expected from the band responsible for boundary-defying songs such as “The Yabba”, “Atlas” and “Ice Cream”.

Space Rock Psych Warriors Black Mountain announce their forthcoming album, Destroyer, out May 24 via Jagjaguwar. They also share their blistering lead single, “Future Shade,” which has a riff that “travelled around the world then hit the bong with a chorus a year and a half later,” says Stephen McBean. “A last attempt at double frosting produced a chorus on chorus death match.  Anxiety is the new heavy metal.”

Black Mountain’s Stephen McBean turned 16 after Woodstock but before Varg started burning down Norwegian churches. And yet, until just two short years ago, McBean had lived his entire adolescence and adult life without a proper driver’s license, that first and most coveted ticket to personal independence. Black Mountain’s new album, Destroyer, is imbued with all that wild-ass freedom and newfound agency (and anxiety and fear) that comes with one's first time behind the wheel.

In October 2018, London band Mass Datura were deep in the French countryside, holed up at Capitola Analogue, studio of French producer and drummer Nico Brusq. There they recorded 11 tracks straight to tape, capturing band leader Thomas’ Rowe’s songs with an immediate energy and analogue warmth. The resulting album, Wish Untitled, is a personal, but willingly shared, journey through the emotional upheavals we’re all familiar with; fractured companionships, the perils of damaging dependency and crumbling under the weight of a world that doesn’t care.

Broen is the name of an Oslo, Mykonos-based quintet who specialize in vibrantly experimental groove-conscious pop. In the band’s native language, Norwegian, Broen means bridge. When the band started in 2011, its moniker was just a name that sounded cool to its founders. However, as the distinct artistic personalities in the collective began pooling their influences, they found it was an apt descriptive term for their bold musical adventures into unchartered artistic territories.

“The name has become a metaphor for us in terms of creating bridges between sounds and musical landscapes that would conventionally maybe not meet,” says vocalist Marianna S. A. Røe. Adds tuba player Heida Karine Johannesdottir Mobeck: “Each time we play, we take the risk to walk together over the bridge that can lead us band members to musical places we didn’t know existed.”

Arm in arm for those fearless sonic odysseys are Anja Lauvdal synths, Lars Ove Fossheim guitar, Hans Hulbækmo drums, Heida Karine Johannesdottir Mobeck tuba, and Marianna S. A. Røe vocals. The five-piece band pens emotive and artfully-abstract poetic lyrics, and composes wildly imaginative pop informed by jazz, funk, psychedelia, electronics hip-hop, and whatever genre members are feeling on any given day. To date, Broen have internationally released 2017’s I Love Art (Bella Union), and 2019’s Do You See the Falling Leaves?( Bella Union).

Tucked away in his home studio in East London, Dominic Wolf has spent the past year building a collection of organic sounds and samples he uses throughout his live set and upcoming releases. Pillow Queens formed in Winter 2016 with the immediate release of their demo EP Calm Girls, which sparked a successful string of UK & Irish dates & festival appearances.

Their second EP State of the State made its way onto BBC 6 Music’s playlists, with Steve Lamacq calling them “deceptively infectious, with sharp hooks and sharp nails”. The lead single Favourite picked up lots of great support on the UK’s national airwaves, including plays on BBC RADIO 1, BBC Introducing, RADIO X & Amazing Radio. After two more UK tours, and two sellout hometown gigs, the band soon found themselves more and more comfortable on bigger stages, opening for the likes of American Football and Pussy Riot, capping off Summer 2018 with a stadium performance opening for Idles & Future Islands.

This quick momentum led to the band working with Mercury Prize nominated producer Tommy McLaughlin for their next single Gay Girls – which received a nomination for the RTE Choice Music Prize song of the year, as well as International airplay on NPR’s World Cafe & KEXP.

In January 2019, Heavy Heart released Bed Bug, the first of three tracks mixed and co-produced by Grammy Award-winning Gabe Wax (The War On Drugs, Palehound, Soccer Mommy).  Following this with Dowsabel in March and Cry Ice in June, these new singles have seen support from the likes of Clash, The Line Of Best Fit, PopMatters, The Wild Honey Pie, Little Indie Blogs, NME and Earmilk.

Rewind to January 2016, to a tiny flat above the main road in New Cross, south east London, and Heavy Heart were starting work on a project which would see them write, record and release a new song each month of that year. Channelling a sound which The Line of Best Fit praised as “lush alt-rock with tremendous promise”, and with lyrics exploring themes of melancholia, depression, female objectification, mass media, obsessive love, and casual witchcraft, the resulting twelve singles formed a kind of collage, a year in the life of a band, pieced together in real time, as it happened.

With the project gaining momentum, Heavy Heart collaborated with vinyl-only label I Can & I Will, who in March 2017 released all twelve tracks as a limited-edition LP collection entitled Keepsake. Lead single Fruitfly went on to pick up UK airplay on 6 Music from Steve Lamacq, on Radio X from John Kennedy, and from Phil Taggart on Radio 1, and also appeared on Killing Moon’s New Moons Vol. IX compilation in 2018.

The band have recently supported Another Sky, Big Spring, MarthaGunn, and Desert Mountain Tribe, played two packed shows at The Great Escape in May, and headlined their own show at Sebright Arms for Communion Music in June.

Elena Setién is an artist defined by her vivid songwriting and nuanced compositions. The multi-instrumentalist’s music exudes the bold individualism and sense of empathy associated with her homeland of Spain’s Basque region. Setién’s declarative gestures both musically and lyrically breathe life into her expressive allegories. Her careful arrangements are direct and affecting and give her room for forays into experimentation. While Elena’s recordings are decidedly pop, she has considerable experience as an improviser. Another Kind Of Revolution, Elena Setién’s Thrill Jockey debut, is a work of entrancing, effortless beauty.

Setién grew up during a period of political upheaval in Spain, in the Basque region. The turmoil of the post-dictatorship period of the 1980s and the intensive civic actions left her with a sense of duty to fight for progress. A brief encounter with Laurie Anderson more recently also profoundly affected Setién. Specifically, Anderson’s parting thoughts on being an artist today: “You just have to make something beautiful and free.” Revolution is, for Setién, going back to simple truths and manifesting the beautiful in people. Her lyrics throughout Another Kind Of Revolution describe the beauty of everyday life, nature, and promote the forces of change not as a burden, but as the very source of hope to draw from.

spiritcake’s work drifts beautifully between personal conflicts and the natural world; every piercing rumination on his own emotive state met by a crackle of nightly noise in the far-off distance, a wash of ambience approaching. 

Led by a voice that is immediately striking, spiritcake’s music is at once raw and rigid, and then untethered and vulnerable.

Colossal Squid, is a new project from producer/drummer Adam Betts (Three Trapped Tigers). Enlisting some of his favourite singers to vocal the tracks including Saint Saviour of Groove Armada, Ak Patterson, Kushal of Melt Yourself down and more  music is entirely composed and performed live by Adam, purely from a drum kit... connected to a load of electronics.

After drumming on tour for Goldie, Jarvis Cocker, Squarepusher and Pete Tong, Adam has signed this new project to Square Leg records. Forging ever bolder and emotive paths through electronic music, Plaid are set to release their 10th studio album ‘Polymer’ on June 7th via Warp Records. The album’s 13 tracks cover energetic bangers, bright melodic visceral rhythms and hypnotic wombic textures to create perhaps their most cohesive, direct album to date.

The innovative duo Ed Handley and Andy Turner have been expanding the realm of electronic music as Plaid since they diverged from trio The Black Dog in the early 90s. In 2019, Plaid stand alongside the likes of Aphex Twin, Autechre and Nightmares on Wax as mainstays of the Warp label as it reaches its 30th anniversary, celebrating achievements in music like few others.

DANA GAVANSKI

Dana Gavanski is a singer/songwriter currently residing in Toronto. She released her first EP, Spring Demos, in the fall of 2017 via Fox Food Records, a collection of delicate folk songs that she wrote the year before while living in Montreal. Once moving to Toronto, Dana met and began collaborating with some local musicians and is currently working on her first LP to be released later this year with the UK label Full Time Hobby. While still rooted in the intimacy of folk songwriting, Dana’s new album explores a different sonic texture with the addition of a full band.

Born in Vancouver to a Serbian family, but relocating to Montreal to attend university, Dana originally planned to pursue a career in film. However, she shifted her attention back to music when her then ex-partner left her his guitar before moving to NYC. Having known only how to play ‘Diamonds and Rust’ by Joan Baez, Dana picked up a Travis Picking technique book and started re-learning how to play. When in the Summer of 2016, she took a job with her father as a producer’s assistant on a horror film in the Laurentians, she made enough to focus solely on developing her music for a year. With that came her first EP, Spring Demos. In April 2019, Dana released her debut 7” single “One by One” b/w “Do You?” on Full Time Hobby.

Dana’s debut LP is due in early 2020.

JOHN MYRTLE

John Myrtle writes songs about love, slugs, drunk policemen and whatever else might be on his mind. Having just released his bedroom recorded EP with Sheffield-based Bingo Records and London’s Sad Club Records and finished his first UK tour, John’s music has been here there and everywhere. With Alex Kapranos, Edgar Jones and Marc Riley declaring themselves as fans, Marc invited the band onto his 6 music show earlier in the year, John is continuing to build his reputation as a songwriter and singer.

New York-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Beshken is self-releasing his album ​Aisle of Palm, d​ ue June 17th. Arriving on the heels of two 2018 singles, “Victim”, “The Medicine” and the 2017 EP, ​For Time Is the Longest Distance Between Two People, t​ his latest record coalesces elements of indie, experimental dance, ambient, psychedelia and dream-pop. It’s a highly personal testament to Beshken’s chameleonic dance between genres. Exploring the point where acoustic recording and digital rendering meet, ​Aisle of Palm​ is an effective lesson in how field recordings, synthesizers, and introspective lyrics can fuse into a challenging, yet accessible format.

Beshken wrote the LP in late 2017 while living in Berlin, influenced by an existential chapter adapting to a foreign place and ruminating on sleepless nights. These periods of transition from place to place or wakefulness to sleep can be vulnerable and isolating--​the first step in letting one’s unconscious have agency. Beshken is content at this hypnagogic junction, seeing it as ​fertile ground for meditation and new beginnings,​ ​“The record is brooding and tempestuous--but I was also aiming to explore the levity in disorienting moments”.

Synth and bass sounds in the single “Cursed” are actually noises from the echochamber-like geodesic domes of Teufelsberg, a Cold War-era listening station just outside the German capital. “Focus On” is a mantra to living life in the present, the lyrics repetitive and reassuring. In “Golden Sun”, a haunting Moog Mother-32 modular synthesizer complements a garage​-​inspired groove. Beshken’s falsetto evokes emotion on “Gray Ghost”, while the song outro elicits videogame-like circuitry.

ELSA HEWITT

Elsa Hewitt is a prolific producer and songwriter, known for making avant-garde electronic music. Mesmerising and deceptively experimental, her music merges currents of lo-fi house, future garage, dub-techno, experimental-techno and hip-hop, with hazy textural ambience, well honed songwriting and spoken word. It is a distinctive yet unpredictable sound that continues to evolve with every release. In 2016, following over twelve years developing her songwriting and aptitude for creating albums, the talented artist won the PRS Foundation's Lynsey de Paul Prize and was shortly after selected for Brownswood’s Future Bubblers Year 2 collective. Consequently in 2017 there came the release of three albums; 'Cameras From Mars', 'Dum Spiro Spero' and 'Peng Variations', which are now collectively entitled 'Becoming Real Trilogy'. In 2018 Hewitt produced 'Quilt Jams', consisting of 13 improvised, minimal and ambient compositions, 'Given' for 'Future Bubbers 2.0’, progressive pop single 'Invisible Threads', the 'Becoming Real - Trilogy Compilation' vinyl, and created and performed work for the Open Music Archive and The Jazz Cafe. Elsa Hewitt’s newest album 'Citrus Paradisi' is released on 1st March 2019, making it her fifth album release in two years.

“When I was writing these songs, every day I would walk on the beach and I was completely alone and overwhelmed by fear…but then I realized how there really aren’t any rules for who you are, who you’ll become, or who you think you need to be. Eraserland is just that. It’s death to ego, and rebirth to anything or anyone you want to be.”

In December 2017, Tim Showalter was uncertain about his next record and the shape it would eventually take. With no new songs written and lacking any clear vision, he was unprepared for the message he would receive from his friend Carl Broemel, the conversation that would follow, and the album that would become Eraserland. Leading off with standout track “Weird Ways” and his powerful declaration of “I don’t feel it anymore,” Eraserland traces Showalter’s evolution from apprehension to creative awakening, carving out a new and compelling future for Strand of Oaks.

“This project seemed to just fall together naturally,” said Broemel, guitarist for My Morning Jacket. “I felt drawn to Tim’s positive energy and his albums…I threw it out there that I’d be happy to help in any way I could with the record.” Broemel quickly reignited Showalter’s interest in what would become Strand of Oaks’ sixth full-length studio release, and within 24 hours, My Morning Jacket members Patrick Hallahan (drums), Bo Koster (keys), and Tom Blankenship (bass) were also on board.

JACKIE MENDOZA

Born and raised in the border city of Chula Vista, California, Jackie Mendoza blends the cultural influences of her hometown and her motherland of Tijuana, Mexico, creating eccentric electronic pop, Latin-driven dance beats and vibrant soundscapes. Latin-pop, indie pop and electronic music have all had strong but equal impacts on Jackie’s musical path at different times in her life. Mendoza has been experimenting with electronic ukulele-based pop, expanding the instrument’s sound to its maximum potential by layering it with beats while singing in both English and Spanish. Her debut EP, LuvHz (Love Hurts), out later this year on Luminelle Recordings, was mostly written during a precarious time in Mendoza’s life, and is a six-track exploration of love and relationships.

Bianca scout is a musician and a dancer although, upon exposure to her craft, it is apparent that the two stem from an inseparable core of her being. 

Her interstellar chords and still-lake skimming vocals invoke a collage of worlds that leave ripples in the recipient’s emotional pool.

KYANOS

KYANOS is a 4-piece originally from the heart of Suffolk, fusing together psychedelia, hypnogogic pop, jazz and alternative rock to create their own unique sound.

The group’s growing popularity has led to support slots with Kevin Krauter, Boy Azooga and Oh Pep!

In September 2017 the group released their debut EP, the experimental, iPhone recorded project Elevator to Japan, which received critical acclaim from NME and BBC 6 Music.

Singles So High and Lost in Blue from 2019s Lost in Blue EP saw KYANOS’ sound pushed out much further than rural Suffolk, receiving praise and support from all around the world.

The group’s latest single Egypt was met with acclaim from BBC 6 Music’s Tom Robinson, calling it ‘a gorgeous track… keeps the surprises coming, justifying every second’.

The arrangements twist and turn, toying with expectation and reveling in the freedom and discovery of youth. At the same time, Chang’s subtle, restrained vocal delivery suggests a deep thoughtfulness, one that belies his youth as he grapples with love and friendship, growth and change, memory and regret. MAX BLOOM

Things change: relationships, musical tastes, the ways we create. Max Bloom knows that. After eight years as part of Yuck, touring with the likes of Tame Impala, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Alvvays, and playing festivals like Coachella and Glastonbury – things changed. Bloom’s own taste was moving away from the ‘90s indie rock that had informed his songwriting with Yuck, and the breakdown of an eight-year-long relationship was the catalyst for him to start making his own music in 2017. Facing severe depression, the end of a long-term relationship and a migration back to his family home, Bloom started crafting solo material as a way to process those changes. Writing without the pressure of an established audience or a predefined sound allowed him to explore different ways of creating. Taking cues from classic songwriters like George Harrison, Elliot Smith and Harry Nilsson, Bloom began experimenting with more expansive instrumentation, rather than focusing on the distorted guitar sounds that characterised his work with Yuck. Writing with the kind of new perspective that only emotional upheaval can bring, Bloom’s lyrics are open, honest and conversational, resulting in a new sound that’s full of intimacy and truth. Sometimes change can be good.

HONEY MOONCIE

17-year-old Honey Mooncie began writing songs at just 11-years-old, influenced by jazz greats such as Nina Simone, Amy Winehouse, Etta James and Chet Baker.

Her modern jazz sound draws from a wide range of contemporary artists including Bruno Major, Lianne La Havas, Joy Crookes & Poppy Ajudha. And her beautiful, light vocal has been likened to Billie Holiday and Minnie Riperton to name a few. She played an outstanding first live performance at The Troubadour in Jan-19 and has since received glowing reviews for shows at The Bedford, Hampstead Jazz Club, Clutch Chicken and w12 Studios.

French producer/vocalist/DJ COUCOU CHLOE – a resident of both London and NTS Radio – released her debut EP Halo (on Creamcake) only in autumn of 2016, but much has happened since then. With her track “Doom” appearing as part of the soundtrack for Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma show at New York Fashion Week in September 2017, the scene was set for her Erika Jane EP – this time on nascent record label NUXXE, which she co-runs alongside Sega Bodega and Shygirl.

With a thoroughly modern sound that has gestated online but lives primarily in the club, her beats range from sensuous and slow hip-hop bangers – complete with her modulated vocal raps – to  nervously energetic, four to the floor with a twist. Playfully experimental but always with an ear tuned to pop, Erika Jane was the best realization of COUCOU CHLOE yet… until 2019’s Naughty Dog EP. With sumptuous trap-adjacent production and a no fucks attitude, Naughty Dog is another reflection of COUCOU CHLOE’s blasé charisma.

WHY?

Yoni Wolf has spent the last two decades traveling the remote sonic terrain where underground hip hop, avant-pop, and psych-rock meet. In that time he’s cultivated a unique sound, and a unique position as one of contemporary music’s most distinctive voices. Some of Yoni’s most compelling and critically-praised musical experiments have been issued under the moniker WHY? and his latest entry is no exception. On AOKOHIO Yoni condenses the essential elements of WHY? into a stunningly potent musical vision. 

Co-produced by Yoni and his brother Josiah, AOKOHIO presents a rich palette of musical voices that emerge and disappear into a constantly shifting kaleidoscope of sound. “I wanted a wide variety of sounds. I didn't want this album to sit in one sonic zone. I've always felt like too jagged of a person to be smooth in that way,” Yoni says. While the album features many notable guest contributors, from Lala Lala’s Lillie West, to Nick Sanborn and Amelia Meath of Sylvan Esso, the listener’s attention remains squarely directed on Yoni’s voice and vision.

AOKOHIO finds Yoni rethinking fundamental aspects of his approach to creating and delivering his music. The album is presented as six movements comprised of two to four songs each, with some segments appearing as brief fragments that dissolve within seconds.

“When I started this project, I decided I needed to try a new approach in creating music and how I work,” Yoni reflects. “I wasn't feeling the idea of going back in and making another ten or twelve song album. It felt arduous. It felt like too much. So I wanted to pare the process down and make it manageable. I thought, 'Why don't I make small five or six minute movements and finish up each movement before I move on to the next.' That's how I started approaching it. The whole process took over five years, I'd start working on something and set it aside for awhile. The earliest songs on this album started in 2013.“

As Yoni reimagined his approach to creating music, he also began thinking of new ways to share the music with his audience. “I initially wanted to release the music as I progressed through the project,” Yoni says. “When I finished a movement I wanted to put it up digitally on Bandcamp or Soundcloud. I just wanted to make little pieces of music and put them out there. But I had a call with my manager and the label and they said, 'We can release stuff through time like that, but we want to do it properly.' So the idea of the project changed after that, but it retained the integrity of working in movements. It's definitely a very different way of working for me. I think it has yielded some interesting results.”

The concept of sharing AOKOHIO in segments over time has been preserved with the release of an accompanying visual album. “I think it's a very artful way of putting the music out there,” Yoni explains. “It's like a television series, it's revealing itself slowly over time. I think it's cool that the audience gets to hear it one piece at a time, and has to wait and digest each piece before they get the next one.”

BABii produces incredibly forward-thinking electro tinged pop/R&B which features skittering beats and incredibly thick, layered synths with heavy bass with a semi industrial feel to them. The lyrics are dark, yet the vocals are sweet and despite its incredible pop hooks the whole LP drips with a sentiment of loss and abandonment. BABii wowed SXSW this year playing 7 shows in 5 days and being compared to everyone from Grimes to FKA Twigs and while those comparisons give you a jumping off point, they also feel lazy as BABii definitely inhabits her own unique world.

KISHI BASHI

Kishi Bashi is the pseudonym of singer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter Kaoru Ishibashi. Born in Seattle, Washington, Ishibashi grew up in Norfolk, Virginia where both of his parents were professors at Old Dominion University. As a 1994 graduate of Matthew Fontaine Maury High School, he went on to study film scoring at Berklee College of Music before becoming a renowned violinist. Ishibashi has recorded and toured internationally as a violinist with diverse artists such as Regina Spektor, Sondre Lerche, and most recently, the Athens, Georgia-based indie rock band, of Montreal. He remains based in Athens.

Kishi Bashi is also the singer and founding member of the New York electronic rock outfit, Jupiter One. In 2011, he started to record and perform as a solo artist, opening for Sondre Lerche, Alexi Murdoch, and of Montreal. He supported of Montreal on their spring 2012 tour.

HOT FLASH HEAT WAVE

San Francisco band Hot Flash Heat Wave rose to prominence in the Bay Area music scene in 2015 with the release of their 'Gutter Girl' music video, from their debut album Neapolitan, with its accompanying video eventually trending on Reddit. Their versatile sound, at times reminiscent of psychedelia, dream pop, and post-punk, demonstrates a dynamic range of songwriting prowess centered around consistently infectious, sun-soaked melodies and guitar hooks.

HFHW formed in Davis, California as a noise collaboration between Adam Abildgaard and Nick Duffy in 2010, adding Ted Davis in the following years amidst a series of lineup changes. Renouncing the traditional front-manned format of most contemporary bands, the members instead each contribute songs and share the lead.

MUNYA

“I don't really understand how I make music," says Josie Boivin, who records and performs as Munya. "I feel like it's coming from another world." Otherworldly is an apt descriptor for Munya's music. The songs are at turns playful and melancholy, as catchy as they are strange, light and airy but full of powerful emotion.

Born in the small town of Saguenay in Quebec, Josie Boivin is the youngest of nine children. Classically trained as a pianist, Boivin discovered she could sing opera in high school, when she was overheard by a music teacher while jokingly imitating an opera singer. After spending her teens in the highly competitive opera world, she studied jazz at the University of Montreal. Boivin took a year to travel and explore, experiencing life and working odd jobs, trying to find the best outlet for her musical vision. She played keyboards and did backing vocals for local artists in Montreal, honing her skills as a producer, performer, and musician.

It wasn't until September of 2017 that Boivin found her calling, when a friend invited her to play the legendary Pop Montreal festival. At that point, she only had one finished song. "I realized that this was my chance," she says. "If I was ever going to make my own music, it was now. I quit my job and moved in with my sister, just so I could write all day."
