London-based alternative trio White Kite have just unveiled their second single 'Past Life’, released via Kobalt Music.
Combining elements of psych-rock with soulful vocals and a four-on-the-floor groove, the track harks back to 70s disco numbers, with contemporary twists present in its wash of synthesizers and electronic textures. The song’s infectious, looping chorus melody is the heartbeat of the track, providing stark contrast to the blues-tinged, guitar-led verses.
The track was written and produced by frontman Louis Shadwick, who explains how the song explores his coming to terms with his sexuality:
“Past Life is about my experience of growing up having to hide what I was, and how that makes you feel like you have to lead a double life,” he says. “You constantly have to reconcile a sense of shame and abnormality with the excitement and liberation of finding places and people with who you can express yourself and not be judged”.
