As part of Illuminations multi-event series. Explorations in music, film and arts.
Zola Jesus is the project of Nika Roza Danilova, who crafts dark music dominated by her operatic vocals and keyboards. For her 5th studio album, TAIGA (Named after the Russian word for "forest”), Nika relocated from central Los Angeles to Vashon Island in the Puget Sound, in effort to immerse herself in the natural world. Vashon is a densely-wooded enclave with no bridges connecting it to the mainland.
The Fuck Buttons musician has been making music under the Blanck Mass moniker since 2010. His self-titled debut was released on Mogwai’s rock action in 2011. In 2012, ‘Sundowner’ – the second track from the album – soundtracked the London Olympics opening ceremony. The song was chosen by Underworld’s Rick Smith and performed by London’s Symphony Orchestra to 900 million people worldwide. His new album "Dumb Flesh" has been lauded by critics and fans alike as a fantastic step forwards and a strikingly original work.
