Fact x Importance = News #4: New Moon Soundtrack, Death Cab For Cutie, Piracy, Chas & Dave

By: Matt Tomiak

The debate over online filesharing reached a surreal apex this week with The Times printing a letter from a Mr James Blunt of SW10 in favour of a clampdown on internet music piracy, but the stern disapproval of the man formerly known as Officer J. Hillier Blount wasn’t a patch on the seething apoplexy in some corners of cyberspace that greeted the unveiling of the soundtrack to forthcoming cinematic adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s novel New Moon, sequel to 2008’s all-conquering Twilight.

Some silly people, it transpires, aren’t very happy about the sacred cows of indiedom being served up to the movie’s core demographic of vampire-admiring teenage girls. Tsk. The record features a new Death Cab for Cutie track, ‘Meet Me on the Equinox’ (whose singer Ben Gibbard was married to actress Zooey Deschanel last week) in addition to contributions from Thom Yorke, Bon Iver & St. Vincent, Grizzly Bear and, er, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club,  and thus offering a reasonable claim to replace this here as the most Tomiaktastic compilation album ever.

Chas & Dave (pictured) have called it a day after 35 years making music together, a decision made in the light of the death of bassist/vocalist Dave Peackock’s wife. The London duo were often dismissed as a knockabout cockneree novelty act, but if there exists a most profoundly pithy insight into the male ego and emotional reticence than that contained within the lads’ 1982 track ‘I Wish I Could Write A Love Song’ (“Is it that I feel silly, when I let my feelings show? Or am I afraid to give too much, in case one day you go?”) then I’d like to hear it.
