Fruit Bats European Tour Diary Pt.2 Bologna
By: Eric D. Johnson
Bologna
So after four days or so in Italy, I finally drank some wine. A couple of plastic cups of Chardonnay, to be specific. In this country, even the cheap wine bought at the corner store tastes like magic. I held back the urge to polish off the whole bottle. I wanted to bring my lucid A-game to the gig. The crowd was pretty sparse and rather subdued but friendly and receptive and all smiles. After we finished they clapped for a few seconds and then got completely silent, watching us as we broke down our gear on stage. To compound the semi-awkwardness of the moment, there wasn’t any house music on. For a few weird seconds, it was just a barely whispering crowd, all eyes on us, in a very quiet, very dark room quietly watching us on a fully lit stage as we wound cables and turned off amps and cleared our throats. It was like a particularly sweet slice of performance art. Bologna is another pretty Italian city - a leafy place with a university town feel. We didn’t have any time here but I tried to soak up as much as I could. Being on tour is like getting the sampler platter of the world. You get a little taste of everything but don’t get to dig into anything much. Bologna was just a nibble. I’ll be back. Oh, and jet lag is still happening. Its 5AM while I write this. I probably shouldn’t be talking about it so much. Seems like a jinx, right?
