Fruit Bats European Tour Diary Pt.4 Ferrara
By: Eric D. Johnson
Every single thing finally clicked on this day. It was such a short drive day we had even planned out a day trip to Venice. As it always goes with wrangling two bands, our Venetian excursion was not to be. No matter. We got to Ferrara, a town I was completely unfamiliar with, only to find that it was gorgeous, filled with humbling Renaissance architecture and lined with winding, narrow cobblestone streets. We went into an ancient Catholic church and it made a lot of sense to me why that religion worked so well then and now. The central message seemed to be “God is HUGE and he is beautiful and he will either save or smite you.” I was pretty moved. There was also a McDonalds across the piazza from that church just in case you wanted a Quarter Pounder with Cheese and french fries after confession. The show was at a great little art space/cafe/restaurant called Zuni. It was packed, people sang along to our songs, bought a bunch of merch, and generally spread cheer around. We played our best show yet, partly as we were settled in to the tour and had had such a great day, but chiefly as a result of the killer vibe and crowded room. That always helps. The club put us up in a hotel that was probably around 600 years old and we slept with Italian ghosts, dreaming of Rome. Slept well but still short on hours. The next morning we went to the van only to find a public market had been constructed around it. It was a comedy of errors trying to get out of there, cops were involved, it was pretty embarrassing. But pretty funny. Heading to the Eternal City.
