Fruit Bats – European Tour Diary Pt.11 – Lisbon

By: Eric D. Johnson

My mind is absolutely blown by Lisbon. One of the most beautiful cities I’ve seen. After coming down from the high and cold plain, we got out of the van and were hit with a cool wet blast of Atlantic air. Very nice. Played at a wondrous venue called Gallery ZDB; located in an ancient house in the Bairro Alto - “The High Town.” Couldn’t be much more instantly enchanted by a place than I am here. Andy from Vetiver and I went on a brief adventure through the neighborhood, racing against time to get to a soon-to-close wine store in order to procure some Vinho Verde - the green wine of Portugal and one of both of our personal fave beverages. For 8 Euros we got not one but two bottles of the tangy stuff. Then off to dinner for fish, steaks and vinho tinto. I had to order two espressos in order to not be completely hammered for the show, which was sold out. We were all so high on being in love with Lisbon that we gave it our all. Vetiver’s van broke down so we’re taking all of their gear up to Porto, the family unit is always made stronger through this kind of thing. Utterly sad to leave Lisbon. We’ve gotta try for a residency next time. In more general tour news, I am absolutely in dire need of a laundromat. For much of the day I couldn’t tell if I was smelling pungent Portuguese street smells or my own ripe self. On to the north, to the wine town of Porto.
