Fruit Bats European Tour Diary Pt.13 Pontevedra
By: Eric D. Johnson
We climbed and weaved our way out of Portugal into the Northwest of Spain, and the landscape began to turn into lush cool temperate jungles of eucalyptus and pine, with little patches of subsistence farms in between; farms planted with date palms and oranges, but also kale and taters and greens. Definitely a little earthly paradise here in this remote corner of Europe. Just when we though it couldn’t get any more beautiful, we hit the inlets of the Atlantic and saw aquaculture beds and barges cutting swaths and hills hitting the sea. They call Galicia “Irish Spain,” as its pretty well right below the Emerald Isle and was visited by the Celts constantly. Brian Carroll, our intrepid Irish tour manager was feeling back at home in the crazy gray greenness of it all. We played at a cultural center this night, and the stage was massive and we felt a bit out of our usual club gig element. This was a stage reserved more for touring ballet companies or lecturing novelists. Once again the crowd was out there somewhere in a big sea of blackness. Still a pretty decent gig - I drank an extra fill of wine and was feeling poetic and loosey goosey. Slept great, heading East again tomorrow.
