Fruit Bats European Tour Diary Pt.22 Aberdeen

Aberdeen
Damn, Scotland is gorgeous. The scale got bigger as we got further north, heaps of sheep, big hills, lots of grays and greens - even a rainbow or two. Winter in the far northern hemisphere has cursed us on this tour with little daylight. Still we were able to make it into Aberdeen in the waning dusk, which made the gray sparkly granite buildings mysterious as night fell. We were told we were to go to Mackay’s outdoor apparel store, where we would find a wealth of incredible untouched clothing from the 1970’s that would make us look like old Scotsmen on walkabout. We found the store, and with two elderly shopkeepers eyeing us warily, we rooted around piles of woolen trousers, Vietnam-era denim, and Sherlock Holmes getups. Unfortunately, the joint was closing moments after our arrival and all of us (but Ron, who scored himself a pipe-smoking/lumberjack cap) walked out empty handed. The show in Aberdeen was superb, save for some technical difficulties. I wasn’t too sure what to expect from our first visit to the far north on a Tuesday evening, but I was incredibly and pleasantly surprised by how many people showed up, sang along, bought stuff. All in all one of the finer nights of this tour. The next day, after a long and fruitless morning search for food along the motorway (we didn’t have time to venture into Edinburgh or Glasgow to eat) we broke down and ate at Burger King. Why do you make us do this? We were primed to eat some crazy Scottish delicacies - I was fully prepared for a haggis lunch - but instead we had to chow down on American cheeseburgers, mayonnaise slathered chicken sandwiches, and French fries. Gnarly! Time now to head to a day of Fruit Bats: Live at Leeds!
