What The Hell Is Going On? #40: SXSW 2010 Week Pt. 3

By: Thomas Hannan

Hey mate.

So, despite the fact that it took me about an hour to get home through the crowds (even though it took place at the end of my road), Rage Against The Machine’s victory party in Finsbury Park yesterday afternoon will live long in the memory as one of the finest and concurrently most ridiculous gigs of this or any other year.  We’ve a full report to follow, which will be very complimentary about the entire event, other than when referring to Tom Morello’s infuriating guitar solos – really, has ever a sound dated quite so quickly?  Otherwise though, shouting “they say jump you say HOW HIGH?” like a fourteen year old version of myself in the Art room on a rainy lunch break was pretty great fun.

The handsome editing team at Rockfeedback TV have been continuing to plough through the reams of footage we shot at the SXSW music conference in Austin, Texas earlier this year.  This week, we thusly dedicate the telly player to the sights and sounds of a state that proudly declares itself to be “bigger than France” through the medium of t-shirts worn by fat people on the corner of places called things like ‘Sixth and Congress’.  We start today with a session performed in the tea rooms at our favourite B&B, The Austin Folk House, from one time Guillemot now residing in the upper reaches of the charts trading under his own name – Fyfe Dangerfield (pictured above – view HERE).  Tuesday comes and brings with it an interview with none other than Motown legend (to use the term appropriately) Smokey Robinson, who twinkles his truly remarkable eyes and treats us to a set of classics at the Austin Music Hall.  We’re back to the Folk House on Wednesday, this time sitting on the porch for an acoustic session with the charming Freelance Whales, before we head indoors to a stranger’s house party on a tip that Beach Fossils were setting up on in the lounge only to find that, lo and behold, they  actually were.  The filthiest interviewee of SXSW 2010 award goes to Tigs from Chew Lips, who end our week on Friday with a characteristically stylish little show.

So yeah, that should help kill a bit of time before the World Cup starts.  Tick.  Tock.  Tick...
