What The Hell Is Going On? #45: Bella Union Week

By: Thomas Hannan

Hey mate.

It’s not often that we come out so publicly in favour of everything a single record label does, but it’s not often that a record label so consistently refuses to put a foot wrong as Bella Union.  We’re dedicating the entire week on Rockfeedback .TV to artists on its roster, starting today (Monday) with a particularly special piece shot on location at The London Eye.  Four of the label’s finest – Ohbijou (pictured), My Latest Novel, The Acorn and the world conquering Low Anthem – join us for exclusive acoustic sessions and interviews in the pods of one of the capital’s most famous landmarks in a piece that’s frankly both visually and sonically pretty stunning.  Tuesday’s Bella Union action comes courtesy of a set from Lawrence Arabia filmed at the Bush Hall in Shepherds Bush earlier in the year, the New Zealander revealing to us how ridiculous he finds his adopted stage name and kicking out tunes from his Chant Darling LP.  On Wednesday, new label mate Lone Wolf treats us to a characteristically intense Rockfeedback Session, filmed in the Lexington venue beneath our office.  We end on Friday on a Rockfeedback TV classic – the ever popular J. Tillman session making another appearance on our hallowed front page.

Elsewhere, our Artist of the Week this week is a pioneer of squelchy, sunny yet serious pop music known as Toro Y Moi, a man we admire so much that we’ve even got him playing the next Club Rockfeedback night at CAMP Basement in East London on Monday.  A few moments browsing Rockfeedback’s corridors will also allow you to win tickets to the Field Day festival, rare seven inches from the Young and Lost Club label, and feel dead jealous that you in all likelihood probably weren’t at this teeny, tiny Janelle Monae gig.  Luckily, we braved the sweat-fest so you didn’t have to.
