What The Hell Is Going On? #46: Secret Garden Party Week

By: Thomas Hannan

Hey mate.

Each time we’ve sent folk to review the Secret Garden Party previously, our reporters have come back as decidedly different people.  Scribes tend to return a funny colour, grinning, telling tales of how the weekend is just like a normal festival but on acid, perhaps because everyone actually is on acid, or perhaps because it’s legendarily good vibes and idyllic location lend each attendee a feeling of oneness with everything that’s good in the world.  We’re on a mission to find out what’s so ‘secret’ about everything, and on Thursday will head festival-wards with the Rockfeedback TV crew to film a documentary on this year’s event (taking place across this weekend).  The line up is expertly previewed here by Frederick Mikardo-Greaves, whilst on the Rockfeedback Telly player this week we take time to look a little more in depth at some of the artists appearing there this year.  We start today (Monday) with the first of three songs performed at a recent Rockfeedback club night by the startlingly talented Anna Calvi (pictured), who’ll also be delivering tunes on Wednesday and Friday.  Breaking up Calvi’s dominance of Rockfeedback TV on Tuesday is pop princess I Blame Coco performing and chatting with our own Daniel Monsell at Hoxton Bar and Kitchen, whilst on Thursday it’s the turn of the resurgent Fionn Regan to remind us of his arresting way with a tune as he treats us to an exclusive acoustic rendition of ‘Violent Demeanour’ on location at the 2008 Field Day Festival.

Speaking of our Head of Live Dan Monsell, he’s on holiday swanning about in New York at the moment, so Rockfeedback Live returns to the temporary ownership of Rockfeedback overlord Toby L and myself for the week.  We’re determined to make the pair of shows we’ve got stewardship of so brilliant that even a trip to NYC seems like a mistake, starting tonight with an all but (but not quite) sold out show from Toro Y Moi, Fergus & Geronimo and Porcelain Raft at London’s CAMP Basement, and following tomorrow with a move just down the road to The Old Blue Last for Kid Adrift, Ghost Poet and Psychologist (tickets for that one here).  Come party with us, Basement Club (RIP) style.
