What The Hell Is Going On? #50: Singing and Songwriting Week

By: Thomas Hannan

Hey mate.

Dig, if you will, the ‘singer songwriter’.  Anyone who uses that term to describe their craft is usually awful, right?  That’s why we’re christening this week ‘Singing and Songwriting’ week instead, as the three solo artist featured on Rockfeedback TV these next few days might indeed write and sing songs with little in the way of permanent band as accompaniment, but we’d assert they’ve a little bit more about themselves, a little something that a term such as that much derided one we’re not mentioning would struggle to sum up.  We started on Monday with a set from The Boy Who Trapped The Sun filmed at one of our irregular but regularly brilliant, folk-tinged ‘Over The Green Hills’ nights at London’s Old Blue Last earlier in the year.  As a nice little tie in, Colin Macleod (the man behind The Boy) has made us this Spotify playlist of awesome tunes as a way to get to know him a little better.  Friendly chap.  Wednesday brought with it the bat shit crazy but also kinda brilliant Beth Jeans Houghton (pictured) with a performance shot at the 2009 End of the Road Festival in Dorset, whilst tomorrow (Friday’s) action comes in the form of an exclusive Rockfeedback Session with the irrepressible dry wit of ex Beta Bandster Steve Mason.

Less than a month now ‘til Rockfeedback X: Ten Years of Rockfeedback, our right knees-up of a tenth birthday party featuring British Sea Power, Future of the Left, Anna Calvi, Three Trapped Tigers and DJ sets from the likes of Bloc Party, The Maccabees the good dudes of Rough Trade and more.  Tickets are selling fast for this as you can imagine, so I’d recommend getting one, or if you want to bring a friend, certainly getting two.

As a side, I prefer to refer to think of that ‘X’ as a kiss at the end of the word Rockfeedback rather than a Roman numeral denoting the number 10.  ‘Rockfeedback Mwah!’, I call it.  You can call it that too, if you like.  I’m not precious about it.  It’s fun being me.
