RFBX: ‘It’s Genius, I Swear’ Special – Calories on Pavement's 'Brighten The Corners'

By: Tom Calories

A groundbreaker for me would be Pavement’s Brighten The Corners.  Arguably not their greatest album, but it holds a certain bond with me. I was 16 years old, and I had never travelled by plane on my own before. The thing that scares me about planes is not really the crashing and terrorist threat, more the fact of how high they tend to fly. I would pay more money to fly if the plane flew lower to the ground.  I'll be honest with you .... I don't like heights.  I'm 6'4 myself... Anyway, the worst thing about this whole flight was I had these 2 obese people sitting next to me, and I couldn't get up to go to the toilet for 12 hours!! I was flying to Malaysia to stay with my father who worked over there. So during the flight I listened to Pavement’s Brighten The Corners on my cassette walkman... mmmm the hisssss of cassette walkmans... You don't get that kind of hiss you used to get out of cassette tapes anymore do you??

Highlights:
1,STEREO
2,SHADY LANE.
4,DATE WITH IKEA
6,TYPE SLOWLY
7,EMBASSY ROW
8,BLUE HAWAIIN
9,WE ARE UNDERUSED
11,STARLINGS OF THE SLIPSTREAM

All the songs are good. More importantly, it flows as an album . The production isn't too bad either. I saw them play when they reformed... a lot better than I expected.

  • Calories release their debut LP Basic Nature today via Tough Love Records on a combined CD/Vinyl set, and download.
