What The Hell Is Going On? #59: Toro Y Moi, Ingrid Olava & Lawrence Arabia

Hey mate.
Fittingly given that he headlines a Rockfeedback show at London’s Cargo for us this very evening (a few tickets remain on the door), we leave it up to Toro Y Moi to kick off this week on Rockfeedback TV. In amongst footage taken from last show he performed for us (at CAMP Basement in the East of the capital back in July), frontman Chaz Bundwick (pictured) rides chillwaves with our own Mike Harounoff, and indeed discusses whether ‘chillwave’ is a thing at all, or just something Hipster Runoff made up.
On Wednesday, we head to the Oya Festival in Norway with the charming Ingrid Olava. Rising through the ranks of Oslo’s surprisingly active network of indie clubs and rock bands (including one called ‘Shit City’), Ingrid Olaval Brænd Eriksen, to use her full name, earned a nomination for the 2008 Spellemannprisen – the equivalent of the Mercury Prize – for her debut LP Juliet’s Wishes, and here showcases classy, Leonard Cohen-esque songs from its forthcoming follow up, The Guest.
Come Friday’s dawn, we’ve another of our beloved Rockfeedback Sessions, this time showcasing the self deprecating wit and melodic prowess of Bella Union Records ‘ own Lawrence Arabia. All round Rockfeedback favourite Lawro touches on topics such as the self hatred of your average Kiwi and performs stripped back acoustic arrangements of songs from his excellent Chant Darling LP. If you’re a person of taste, you might want to catch him at this his forthcoming Rockfeedback Live appearance at the London Borderline on October 29th.
Elsewhere on the site, we pass comments of varying enthusiasm on records from Deerhunter, DD/MM/YYYY, Manic Street Preachers, Peter Broderick and Avey Tare, gigs from Abe Vigoda, Everything Everything, Blonde Redhead and Grinderman, and take great pleasure in introducing our artist of the week, Glasser, to you by way of an in depth biographical trawl and competition to win some of her music.
