Listen To: James Blake & Drake - 'James Drake'

By: Mike Harounoff

The 'mash up' is to many the lowest common denominator of music, a genre exisiting due to a house party of drunks in which one half of the room were playing one song and the other half of the room playing another, to which somebody said 'this is pretty good bro dude man' and then somebody probably got very rich. Whilst on the whole this is definitely true, there have been moments of 'mash up' clarity. And when I say 'moments' what I really mean is that it has happened twice in 'mash up' history. The first came when somebody put Dizzee Rascal and The Strokes together and the second was 'The Grey Album', a record which saw Dangermouse take Jay Z's 'Black Album' in one hand, The Beatles 'White Album' in the other and then rub them together for 5 minutes until something new was created. It then all went quiet for the 'mashup'... that is, until yesterday when Philly based DJ Bombe took the work of James Blake and mixed it together seamlessly with Drake to create a mixtape that he has decided to call 'James Drake' - it's name does it no justice.
