Win: Flaming Lips, Dinosaur Jr & Deerhoof Tickets for 1st July Alexandra Palace Gig

By: Thomas Hannan

If some dude was playing The Soft Bulletin, Bug and Milk Man from a set of big speakers on a hill in North London on a July evening and I could turn up with my mates and drink beer and spin them around to ‘Race For The Prize’, I’d totally do it.  The fact that on Friday July 1st, the geniuses at All Tomorrow’s Parties have convinced the acts who made those records – namely The Flaming Lips, Dinosaur Jr and Deerhoof, dummy! – to recreate their masterpieces live, in the flesh, by using their hands to make sounds come out of actual instruments, all at the gorgeous Alexandra Palace, is pretty much too exciting to contemplate.  Really.  I might have to have a cry.

Think about it a little.  The Soft Bulletin is by far and away the greatest Flaming Lips record, and one of only a handful of albums that came out of the 1990s that could truly be considered a classic.  And if anyone tells you that You’re Living All Over Me is a better Dinosaur Jr. record than Bug, tell them their ‘indier than thou’ attitude has no place in your moshpit, and blast ‘Freak Scene’ at them.  Milk Man, too, is probably the best album from one of the most underrated bands of our times, the frightfully excellent Deerhoof, and having all three played live in their entirety (do ATP have the copyright on the phrase ‘in their entirety’ yet?) means that this will be a night on which NOT ONE SINGLE BAD SONG is played.  Christ.  You don’t even get that when you go and watch Springsteen.

Through some stroke of fortune, we’ve got a pair of tickets to what will surely go down as the gig of the year to give away to one lucky reader.  To stand a chance of winning them, all you’ve got to do is head to our Facebook page, and dutifully follow the really easy instructions.

Don’t want to risk it?  The few remaining tickets for the gig are available here.  For travel info and up to the date details on stage times etc., head to ATP.
