New Idea #75: Phlo Finister

Female singers are currently everwhere. Since the world decided it was going to invest all its hopes in the vocal chords of either a council estate charmer or a Brit School belle back in 2008, the strong emphasis on women in pop has been inescapable. Of course, this isn't to say that a similar thing hasn't happened with male songwriters, it's just that the female singer has now become a genre has opposed to a gender. And just like with any other genre of music, there are flag flyers for each of its sub sections - we've got Nicki Minaj for hip hop the crossover fans, Cheryl Cole for people that watch a lot of television, Adele for the whole entire world, Lana Del Rey for those who like to unfairly ridicule and even Azealia Banks for those who like prefer their spice to sugar. Now we've also got Phlo Finster, a 19 year old singer from Los Angeles who is giving contemporary music something to think about with her soulful, smouldering and very cool new EP 'Crown Gold'. Wearing her influences on her sleeve, tracks sample the likes of Dr.Dre, The Doors, Nancy Sinatra and Mobb Deep. It all makes for a brilliant and exciting listen for one of the future stars of the genre that will become known as 'Woman'.
