Week Commencing: 13/12/04

Drats,
So The Magic Numbers sadly can no longer co-curate / perform at our Xmas Party this coming Friday; only the second time ever in three years a band has regretfully been forced to postpone a performance with us - apologies to those that purchased tickets: refunds available at the Barfly on the night. The reason for the no-show? They've got a debut album to record, and we weren't going to hold them back; selfishly, we want them to record the most amazing, drop-dead album of 2005 just so we can prove our constant jabbering was worth it. We'll have a rescheduled date for you soon.
Yet, if you're still seeking live thrills, rockfeedback and pre-Xmas stylee, this week - then come along and sample live-sets from hotly reckoned, new types Editors (just played with The Bravery, and amassing a healthy interest) - who we tipped you off on some weeks back - or Oxford's The Young Knives, plus a special guest headliner to be announced shortly via the site. Stay tuned. It'll still be the jubilant knees-up we promised. And rockfeedback / special guest DJs are also scheduled. Keep ordering spots - here. The venue and date are still the same - Camden's Barfly, on Friday 17th December. It'll be salacious.
Otherwise, this week spans your last chance to gig it; here's the choice shows to indulge within (and there's a lot:
Gigs this week, London: The Basement Club's regular venue the Buffalo Bar, Highbury, N1 promises a stupidly special guest (we can't believe who it is...); turn up early and somehow get in... we'll have a full report the following day... that's on Wednesday (15th; £5:00 on the door); A Silver Mount Zion follow up their beautiful ATP set at Camden's Electric Ballroom tonight (Mon 13th; pay on door); Babyshambles continue their reign at the Forum and Astoria - two venues that once saw classic Libertines performances - (Mon 13th; sold out; and Sat 18th; sold out); Bloc Party and Kano camp it up in Heaven (Tues 14th; sold out); Blink 182 do a 'low-key' one at Brixton's Academy the same night (14th; sold out); Aqualung opt for a quiet Xmas at the Queen Elizabeth Hall (Fri 17th; £15:00); metal types Arch Enemy fill the Forum in Kentish Town (Fri 17th; £15:00); The Bluetones keep on marchin' at Islington's Academy (Sat 18th; £14:00); The Buzzcocks and The Rakes hit the Forum as well (Weds 15th; pay on the door); Doves head west to Hammersmith's Palais for a sell-out return (Weds 15th; sold out); The Charlatans go sarf to Brixton's Academy (Thurs 16th; sold out); De La Soul join the Academy masses in Islington (Sun 19th; sold out); Do Me Bad Things play the Must Destroy Xmas shindig on Wednesday (15th; 93 Feet East; sold out).
Plus: Gene's last ever gig is due at the Astoria on Thursday (16th; sold out); Kings Of Leon do another Brixton gig, 'cuz they can (Mon 13th; sold out); scary bastards Laibach try out the Electric Ballroom on Thursday (16th; pay on door); Kasabian groove their arses off in a cavernous Brixton Academy (Weds 15th; sold out); miserabilist Lou Barlow of Sebadoh and The Folk Implosion is at the Borderline for a low-key one-off this Friday (17th; £11:00); Morrissey performs his most prestigious, headline UK show of the year at Earl's Court (Sat 18th; £32:50 - ouch); Muse play the first of two shows with The Zutons in support at Earl's Court, too - but they're sold out (Sun 19th); stoner-rockers Orange Goblin are at the Camden Underworld (Sun 19th; £8:50); The Chalets perform at Metro (Thurs 16th; £5:00); The Departure play their biggest show to date - and after just releasing two singles - at Highbury's Garage (£8:50; Tues 14th); and Bernard Matthews, erm, I mean, Butler's new group with Brett Anderson The Tears debut their live-show with The Subways in support at Heaven (Thursday 16th; sold out).
UK Chart-action, this week: Brian Wilson's 'Good Vibrations' is number 30, Ash with 'Renegade Cavalcade are 33, Beastie Boys' 'An Open Letter to NYC' is 38, Art Brut are just shy of the top-40 once more with second single, 'Modern Art' / 'My Little Brother', and Ludes' 'Radio' is 68. There are no new LP-entries to speak of.
The current rockfeedback playlist: both of Bright Eyes' new albums, due in Jan '05; 'Worlds Apart' by ... Trail Of Dead; and the sumptuous Bloc Party's 'Silent Alarm': LP of 2005 already. No contest.
We'll see you Friday.
