Week Commencing: 8/9/05

imageIt's,

A lucky job. Next week, myself and Tim Dellow jet off to New York City in order to liaise with characters at the CMJ conference, and generally provoke mischief. We'll be looking most forward to Test-Icicles, who're doing three sets in the Big Apple, not to mention our Transgressive Records signing, Regina Spektor. Report on that excitable few days in this column on our return.

Had a weird weekend/start to the week - culminating on Tuesday night in a rabid White Heat club-evening in London's Madame Jo Jo's, where reggae/pop-themed solo wordsmith Jamie T startled us so much we had to book him for our next Basement Club - full details here; reserve entry and attend - and our new Transgressive signings The Young Knives performed a blinder. Shame they didn't rate our DJ-ing (decide for yourself when I DJ again at Goldierocks, Elbow Rooms, Islington tonight - Thursday 8th Sept). Badly-suited narks. The weekend before heralded a video-shoot from another Tranny artist, Jeremy Warmsley, meanwhile, sorting his debut promo for ace tune, '5 Verses' - thanks to rockfeedback reader Sarah McCafferty, you can view behind-the-scenes rehearsal-footage of that day here.

Extended Gigs this week, London: New Rough Trade types Dr Dog do an early gig at the Barfly, Thurs 8th (£6:00); Ex-Models and Test-Icicles co-headline the Highbury Garage on Mon 12th (£7:00), complete with support from Black Wire; Belgian oddball poppers dEUS sell out the ICA (Tues 13th); rejuvenated electroclash flops Fischerspooner attempt the Astoria (Weds 14th; £15:00); NZ heroes Goldenhorse parade their craft at Barfly (Fri 9th; £5:00); much-talked-about, unsigned lot Guillemots slay the Spitz (Weds 14th; £6:00); cult cover-version reworkers Hayseed Dixie fill the Forum (Weds 14th; £14:00); Holly Golightly does the 100 Club (Thurs 15th; £8:00); The Lovegods reach the Borderline on Fri (9th; £6:00); JJ72 grace the Islington Academy (Thurs 15th; sold out); Millionaire ply their equally-as-Belgian-as-dEUS obscure popera at Barfly (Mon 12th; £6:00); Mystery Jets and Larrikin Love do the art t'ing at ICA (9th; sold out); Opeth embark upon Mean Fiddler on Thurs (8th; £15:00); this month's Basement-ers Redjetson do a pre-club headline at the Bar Academy, Islington (Fri 9th; £5:00); Richard Hawley has a stab at the Scala (Thurs 8th; £10:00); The Rifles return to their spiritual home at the Metro (Weds 14th; £5:00); and, cool as 'eck, The Lemonheads perform two reunion shows as part of the 'Don't Look Back' series of shows, at Shepherd's Bush Empire, proffering live-sets inclusive of a full run-through of classic LP, 'It's A Shame About Ray' and assorted classics (Weds-Thurs 14th/15th; sold out).
