No More Shouts, No More Calls - Electrelane Split

By: Thomas Hannan

Electrelane R.I.P.

After nine years and four studio albums together - not to mention a host of singles, EPs and influential live performances - Brighton's Electrelane have called it a day. Well, they've announced and 'indefinite hiatus', and we all know what that means, don't we?

They broke the news to the world in the early hours of the morning thusly:

"We have decided that the upcoming gigs will be our last for the foreseeable future. After ten years of much fun and hard work, we have realised that we all need a break and time to do other things. This was a tough decision for us to make, but ultimately a positive one.

A big thank you to everyone who has come to our shows, put on our shows, and bought our records over the years. It means a lot to us. We're really grateful to have had the opportunity to play gigs all over the world and to meet so many lovely people. This last year has been especially enjoyable and we feel happy about moving on with all these good memories to look back on. At the moment we haven't made any band plans for the future, but we're going to have a break and see what happens.

Love, Electrelane."

There is however a little bit of Electrelane action left, as the first sentence of their suicide note suggests. They tour the UK this month, culminating in a hometown show on December 1st. On November 26th, they release 'In Berlin' from No Shouts No Calls, the same day that their keyboard player Verity Susman releases her solo single 'Red Dream / A Mouthful of Pebbles' on the Too Pure Singles Club.

Rockfeedback writers were just last night chatting amongst themselves about great albums to have been released by British bands this year, and other than Electrelane's No Shouts No Calls, we were depressingly able to name very few. It's for that reason, and many others (we once raved to embarrassing lengths about how perfect their second LP, The Power Out, is), that we hope they take the same attitude to the idea of an 'idefinite hiatus' as Les Savy Fav did, rather than go down the Pavement / At The Drive-In route.

Don't leave it too long, girls - British music really needs you right now.
