FREE SHOW! Fol Chen, Hind Ear & Plug for Rockfeedback @ The Lexington, 11/6/09
By: Dan Monsell
Three fantastic new bands from California, London and Brighton, one amazing venue, a Thursday night in June. The stars are all aligned perfectly. There'll be DJs, a bar full of drinks and some people making some weird and wonderful noises. And because we understand that some of us just ain't got the dollar coming outt'a our ears right now, we're going to be this one for NADA. Yep BLOODY FREE.
That's NO MONEY. You just turn up, walk upstairs to the venue, and you're in. Once there, you get to listen to some Rockfeedback DJs + see some bands and hang and stuff. How good is that? What a great way to celebrate 6 months of living in the Lexington. It's FREE! Like London Lite, a mother's love, or Nelson Mandela! Here comes the trouble...
FOL CHEN - Fiercely lighting up the blogosphere and stopping in as part of a tour of, well, London, Fol Chen are a mysterious Californian five-piece who burst hard into our ear-line with the sleazy-pop excellence of super single 'Cable TV' early this year. Going over something of a storm at SXSW this year, live they come complete with black strips across their eyes, and clothing from the future. Musically it's a truly joyful and Prince-like dance filled proposition with a subtle, darker edge full of sparkling originality. It's also a bit beat-based; krauty experimental rock too - like Liars for instance, a bloody amazing band with whom they share a guitarist. www.myspace.com/folchen
HIND EAR - Brighton newbies Hind Ear, these technical wizards of a four-piece create a multi-armed, multi-voiced wall of rhythm and melody. Employing loops and layers of guitar, voices, drums, synths and samples, their sound cuts across multiple scales, from headphones to dancefloor. They remind us of the likes of Battles, Cornelius, Don Cabellero and our buddies Three Trapped Tigers. They are well weapon, and they were definitely raised weird, in the best way possible.

PLUG - Yes, we've brought you the excellent Plugs, but this here is PLUG, a very different (yet equally exciting) proposition altogether. This is a London based femme-duo who play minimalist post-punk with a nod to the likes of Delta 5, The Slits and other great underground titans of the late 70s/early 80s. Like them they possess a penchant for stripped-down punked-up sneaker-moving tunes. But of course this is the big '09, and PLUG very much put their own up-to-date DIY spin on things - specifically how one of them plays keyboard with her toes while playing bass, and the other one plays drums. That there is progress. It's also very hard to Google them, so don't even bother - instead, check out the good stuff right here - www.myspace.com/plugddd
That's all on Thursday 11th June, at the Lexington, 96-98 Pentonville Road. (Kings X, Angel tube)
Here's where we'd put a ticket link but we can't because it's FREE. F*CKING FREE. Madness.
