The fact that 'New York City Cops' is available on millions of CD's around
the world, is already very well known and is currently in many
homes - makes me perfectly satisfied to replace it on the American release of 'Is This It' to
be in sympathy for the loss and efforts over here.
I think the song is a magical example of certain moments captured on the recording which are urgent and primal, reminding me of what I've loved about Iggy Pop's
'Search and Destroy'. If, indeed, the song were not easily available to those
who like The Strokes music, I would be absolutely crushed that such a gem
would go unheard!
I do like the new song, 'When It Started'; it seems like
a perfect song that the second Strokes album would include. It fits into the
first album well, but indicates a new upbeat songwriting style, in keeping
with the band's energy these days.
I really enjoyed working on it because it
was the happiest, smoothest experience we ever had in the studio together,
and everyone involved noticed that... Like a good team getting back together,
knowing its roles and game-plans more thoroughly, for having the time to put
things in perspective.
