Why is this worthy of my time and money?: For people like us, the idea of an avant-rock festival that costs this little money that takes place in one venue (and a good one at that) in the very coolest part of town - meaning no traipsing about everywhere, likely in the rain - is pretty irresistible. Not just the ease of location, but the line up too; the inaugural Hokaben Festival have gone out of their way to produce one of the most chin scratchingly brilliant collections of bands you'll find outside of an ATP Festival line up all year. Everyone from pioneering newcomers like Fucked Up and DJ Scotch Egg to the rightly legendary likes of Don Caballero and Acid Mothers Temple, this is one to get completely lost in alright. Perhaps the highlight will be a rare appearance on the Sunday from the Sun Ra Arkestra. Obviously without their inimitable leader (pictured above, mid trance, one assumes), the remaining members of the ensemble promise to channel Sun Ra's spirit in to some kind of alterna-jazz masterpiece the likes of which nobody else is capable of. Get yourself down to the 'build and oscillator workshop' as well, and make the world a better place.
