Francois Virot - It’s Genius, I Swear

I pick Starters Alternators by The Ex. The whole band is special to me because they changed my life, and this record is their best shot. I first saw them when I was twelve years old in a squat in Dijon, France (Les Tanneries), when I was otherwise only listening to straight up punk rock.
The lyrics are great, the music is great, the whole intention is great... and intention is one of the most important things in music, not only because of the political purpose, but also 'cause it makes the music sounds different. True. It's like they know why they're playing, they know what music is, as a social celebration. But I'm not sure people need to hear it - music isn't that important. It's just music. Haha!
I listened to it just today. The most amazing ting about it is that my thoughts about it now don't differ that much from the first time I heard it. Its purpose is totally up to date. The Ex were influenced a lot by African music - they're friends of Konono. It sounds as if they've been influenced by them when they were on tour together in Africa. I also think Konono have been influenced by The Ex in some way.
I've met so many people who hate it because of the voice, straight. They say there are no melodies. But in my opinion, I still hear melodies. I wouldn't change a thing about it. But then again, I wouldn't change a thing about anyone's record. Hehe.
