Why is this worthy of my time and money?: Whoever she's with (backing bands have been called everything from The Pirates to Les Triplettes, the name seemingly changeable at will), Peggy Sue is one of the most engaging new singer songwriters in the country. Taking her cues from everyone from Kurt Cobain to Regina Spektor, the gal's songs have an almost grunge-like sensibility instilled with the edge and good humour of NYC anti-folk. Except it's from Brighton. Basically, it's inventive without disappearing in to its own lonely yet futuristic world, and it's tuneful without seeming at all frivolous or under thought. Rather, there are moments when even whilst being particularly obtuse lyrically, Peggy Sue and the whatevers perform with an authority so engaging that it can seem like they're delivering home truths aimed specifically at each individual in their rapidly growing audience.
