This sees us take on an alt-country / folk feedback special event called "OVER THE GREEN HILLS"- featuring four of our hot tips in this vein descending on a cold but warming up Thursday eve at Hoxton Bar and Kitchen at the end of February.

KASSIDY

Fast-rising Scottish alt-country / folk quartet Kassidy embrace the classic Americana stylings of the likes of Crosby Stills and Nash, The Band and new British folk heroes like Mumford and Sons to offer a fresh sound to the new wave of perfectly executed four-part harmonies contained within timeless, all-embracing song-craft.

ANDREW DAVIE - In what was a great year for folk-tinged music in the UK, Cherbourg looked set to follow their close associates Mumford and Sons into the spotlight of breakthrough acts in 2009. However towards the end of the year, the band split, with frontman and songwriter Andrew Davie choosing to go it alone and search out his own more personal musical direction. A break to record in Scotland now under the belt, exciting material that’s surfaced in “Lost without you” sees a more mature, fuller sound emerge. Whilst still assembling a traditional UK folk sound with Davie’s warm resonant voice, there also seems more of a place for the more sombre sounds of Bonnie Prince Billy or Midlake. Davie is clearly moving into new and interesting paths of his own, and this sees an airing of new material that will surely see him cherished once more by both the burgeoning folk community, and beyond.

ANNA CALVI

Anna Calvi has both a touch of the new British folk explosion and slightly more haunting PJ Harvey, even Jeff Buckley-isms to make her an artist worth keeping some eyes squarely on. She's already causing quite a stir, and 2010 looks set to be a deservedly great time for her. Her recent tour with Johnny Flynn saw her make an army of new fans set to grow in spades in the coming year.

LULU AND THE LAMPSHADES - Lulu and The Lampshades are an exciting new quartet of three girls and chap from London by way of Bristol, and make jaunty, playful and emotionally bare nu-folk songs. Featuring lyrics about the everyday things like Cherry Cola and riding bikes in Paris on New Years Eve, they call to mind the likes Peggy Sue, Kimya Dawson, and the mild eccentricity of The Regina Spektor They've been causing a mild panic of late, with the video for recent single "You're Gonna Miss Me", featuring two members in a kitchen, wearing pyjamas, showing their penchant for playing "found" instruments of cutlery yoghurt pots and a typewriter, amassing over 200,000 views. Youtube clips aside, the likes of ukelele, suitcase drums, violins and a whole manner more feature here for this fun new group, including of course, occasional lampshades on stage.
