HAPPY BIRTHDAY

"Happy Birthday. Take your mother’s hand as she leads you to the table of your friends. You are about to eat musical cake and ice cream and see colors that you’ll dream about in future nights’ sleeps. They are pink and lime green and they are glowing electric and you will soon be happily floating in a pleasure-filled pit of rock and roll."

“Everybody’s on the same frequency,” The Happy Birthday kids sing. HB care about making good music, and are proof that you don't have to be born in California to have a knack for writing sunny pop songs and catchy punk hooks. Made up of Kyle Thomas (aka King Tuff), Chris Weisman, and Ruth Garbus, the band formed in November 2008 to play one show at the punk-space "Tinderbox"(RIP), in their hometown Brattleboro, Vermont and were signed to Sub Pop after only their fifth show. The band mash 60's harmonies, 70's attitude, 80's brashness and 90's angst into scuzzy little pop songs. The band are touring in support of their self-titled LP, a free mp3 of which is available here.

“…excellent new Sub Pop signings, whose self-titled debut is blowing the minds of the slacker nation now.” NME

“There’s so much tunefully wild enjoyment on offer it’s hard to pick highlights.” UNCUT

Spectrals

Lo-fi one man bands are the new grunge, Mike Sniper's (Blank Dogs) Captured Tracks 'Record Label' is the new Sub Pop, thus Spectrals is the new Nirvana.  We were first introduced to the dreamy Phil Spector styled classic pop stylinging of Louis Jones and band when he supported Summer Camp back in April. Since then releases on Moshi Moshi have given way to bags of attention off underground music aficionado's, independent press, and a 7" and LP coming out on aforementioned Captured Tracks! , Nineteen year old Leeds has a touch of a realized but youthful Daniel Johnston mixed with some of the new wave of US beach pop. What perhaps seperates him out is that he posseses an ambition to bring his initial bedroom songs of love and northern soul heart to a more hi-fi level and it seems only a matter of time before he leaps even higher into the hearts of minds of many.

Fanzine:
Oh what glorious days the mid 90s and mid 80s for guitar bands were, and for London four piece Fanzine this is something known well. An exciting prospect, their jangy guitars and impassioned lyrics are a fresh patchwork of Graham Coxon's solo work, The Lemonheads and Pavement. The band have already played with the likes of Yuck, Cymbals Eat Guitars and Fergus and Geronimo and are fast becoming one of the most exciting prospect to leap out of london's now bulging lo-fi guitar scene.

The event is to take place at the Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen and the doors will be open from 7:30. We recommend jumping on this one early, as it promises to be one of the best gigs of the coming season.
