Be Your Own PetIf you're having a pensive moment, don't put Get Awkward on. This is an album which is unashamedly loud, fast, upbeat and shouty. Subsequently, it's not a collection of songs likely to attract any middle grounders. Dependent on your particular musical preferences, Be Your Own Pet are either going to be responsible for creating the soundtrack to your life, or feel akin to drilling through your own eardrums.

However, this being said, even detractors must admit that BYOP are good at what they know. Each riff is simple but catchy, and as a punk frontwoman Jemina Pearl sounds the perfect mixture of equal parts cute and terrifying. Neither do the band fall foul of the most common and lazy insult thrown at others in their field- as such each track is melodic and individual.

With track names including 'Bitches Leave', 'Food Fight' and 'Heart Throb' it doesn't feel wrong to suggest that the lyrical inspiration comes from the more trying elements of youth culture. However- and perhaps as a result- this is not a polished album spanning a diverse range of influences and sounds.

But as ever with youth punk, that doesn't appear to be the point. For that reason fans will probably be able to nominate themselves without hearing a single track- if shouty, loud, fast and upbeat music is your thing, Get Awkward should be just what you're looking for.
