“At times it’s screaming out for a big chorus so much it hurts…”; release – 2012
Beach Fossils are currently working on their second album, but before that they‘ve got a 7“ single ‘Shallow‘ on the way, backed up by b-side ‘Lessons‘. The track isn’t going to throw off any comparisons the band attracted to fellow New Yorkers Real Estate with their previous work – it could easily be mistaken for a Real Estate tune, and even on repeat listens it’s impossible to throw off the shadow of the comparison.
Where Real Estate succeeded on their second album was their mastering of a big melody, something that ‘Lessons’ fails to do, at times screaming out for a big chorus so much it hurts. The track is eclipsed by a-side ‘Shallow’, which is superior in most ways, but I guess that’s why it’s the b-side…? We shouldn’t be too picky, but I can be, and I will be. Sorry.
