Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis
In high school, a drummer I used to play with said he and his father always listened to this for Christmas. After that I just really loved this song and I always put it on for Christmas myself.
Mitt hjerte alltid vanker
A classic christmas album from one of the best jazz pianists in Norway. He recorded this album in 1997, and to a lot of Norwegians, this is what Christmas sounds like. He plays this record every year some time before Christmas and it’s a really nice and warm tradition. This particular song is one the most beautiful folk psalms we have in Norway. My heart always wanders.
One of the most famous hymns there is I guess. Intepreted in Sufjan Stevens quirky and melancholic way. Beautiful!
We’re Goin’ to the Country!
A warm, familial folk Christmas song from Sufjan Stevens. A simple song revolving around a simple event and all the love and care that goes into these types of traditions.
Es ist ein Ros entsprungen
Another traditional hymn from Bugge. Beautiful melody, played in a beautiful way. He recorded this album to find peace and quiet during Christmas and get away from stress, the pressure of gifts and the fact that we always have to be so happy all the time, especially during Christmas. When he worked at the emergency room in a psychiatric hospital, he realized that Christmas is also high season for depression, loneliness, and domestic violence. This is his gift to all those people. Recorded in Rainbow Studios with Jan Erik Kongshaug behind the desk.
O helga natt
Norwegian performance artist Nils Bech did a beautiful version of 'O Holy Night' a couple of years ago. He premiered it on well known TV-series 'Skam'.
Å kom nå med frihet
This is a song from a record the Crown Princess of Norway financed. It’s a handful of different Norwegian artists doing their own versions of Christmas songs. Ingrid Olavas version of 'O Come , All Ye Faithful' is quite breath taking.
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
You all know this song. It’s a classic. And no one sings it as lovely as Judy Garland.
At the Christmas Ball
Let’s get into party mode with one of the most celebrated of all blues singers! Bessie Smith and Fred Longshaw brings us a great piece of art.
Harde tider (Rough times)
This song is recorded in Botsen prison. Christmas can be a hard time of the year for some people. It’s very moving to hear these men sing 'Rough times, don’t show up again'.
