Get to know Transgressive Records new signing Julien Chang
Our buddies at Transgressive have just released the ace debut album from Julien Chang. The writer, singer and musician is in London very soon to play his first live shows with his band so we sent him our favourite questions to get to know him a little better...
What three words best describe your music for someone who's never heard it?
"I couldn't possibly..."
What's the best gig you've ever been to?
"I went to see Jacob Collier and the Robert Glasper Experience at the Washington DC Jazz festival in summer 2017. Very moving. Either that or it was a Pink Floyd cover band that I saw in spring 2018. Yes, I'm serious. They were called Brit Floyd, and they played at the Lyric Opera House in Baltimore. I went with friends, don't worry."
What was the last book you read that you'd recommend?
"Last week I read two Checkhov plays. Cherry Orchard and The Seagull. Checkhov really hits that Russian wave of being terribly miserable and equally prophetic about some revolutionary utopia. Very cool."
What does music mean to you?
"If god exists, good music—and art in general—is probably as close as we can get.
Vinyl, CD or digital?
"In the wise words of Zizek, 'I have ethical principles. I will not watch a movie if it has not been pirated.'"
If you could be another person for one day, who would you be and why?
"Neo from the Matrix but only if we were going to upload skills and stuff that day."
Who is the best artist in the world?
"Which one? Martian art is due for a good renaissance pretty soon."
What can we expect from your live show?
"I play live with four close friends from school. They're all really killing and inspiring musicians. Every rehearsal is a truly humbling experience. Expect to see the result of a lot of hard work!"
