Liverpool's Strawberry Guy talks performing live and his musical heroes
Strawberry Guy is Liverpool local Alex Stephens who you may recognise as The Orielles keyboard player. His lush dream-pop tunes have picked up millions of listeners on YouTube and we're thrilled to be welcoming him to London for his first headline show in the city in January next year. Ahead of that, Alex kindly answered our questions! Have a read and get tickets to The Islington now:
What three words best describe your music for someone who's never heard it?
Romantic, melancholic but uplifting?
What's the best gig you've ever been to?
Honestly, I went to go and watch Sigur Rós in Bristol about four years ago and it was the most beautiful thing. The sun was setting while they played just off the dock, it was so good I actually shed a few tears.. haha.
What was the last book you read that you'd recommend?
I read Atonement over the summer and I thought it was brilliant, great romance story with a truly intriguing storyline. Would recommend to anyone.
What does music mean to you?
Hard question, music should make you feel a certain emotion very strongly, it can be any emotion I guess. If you don’t feel anything very strongly, then it’s probably not very good music haha.
Vinyl, CD or digital?
Vinyl, there’s nothing like holding a record that you own and being able to physically play a song that's engraved into wax.
If you could be another person for one day, who would you be and why?
Valentina Tereshkova, she was the first woman to go into space. Firstly, because it would be amazing to go into space and not feel any gravity, and secondly because it’d be interesting to experience living as the opposite gender for a day.
Who is the best artist in the world?
I couldn’t possibly say, every artist brings something totally different, I couldn’t compare my favourites! But honestly some of the best have to be Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Nina Simone, Brian Wilson, Claude Debussy, Henry Mancini, Ella Fitzgerald, David Byrne, Carole King, ABBA, Erykah Badu.. the list could go on and on!
What can we expect from your live show?
A full five piece band, a mix of piano, synths, violins and guitar. A mix of both up-beat and slow songs that make your heart throb but also lift you up too. The songs have been reworked slightly for live purposes too.. Also, don’t expect me to be too serious on stage when I talk in between songs, the music is and I’m not, which is an odd contradiction haha. It’s tender music but also fun, coming to a strawberry guy show might be a good date idea??! haha
