With his 2010 debut album Learning, Mike Hadreas, aka Perfume Genius claimed the tortured bedroom musician crown as his own, only to have it  taken from him this year by Youth Lagoon. Hadreas’ riposte has been swift, readying new album Put Your Back N 2 It for release early next year.

Gone are the plinky-plonky piano lines from his debut, replaced with a lush synth backing that frames Hadreas’ slowly delivered vocals, with lyrics detailing his inner unease with showing affection to his boyfriend in public. Despite the genuinely affecting nature of the song, it feels like an unfinished product, either missing a second half, or missing a few more layers of synth. While most of the songs on his debut failed to explore past the three minute mark, ‘All Waters’’ two minutes feels particularly meagre, and perhaps isn’t the best track to preview his new album with. Expect better things from Mr Hadreas in the future.
