TOP 10: Boniface

18 Dec 2019

Boniface's Micah Visser has compiled their top 10 record of 2019 for us

This Christmas we're asking some of our favourite bands and artists to select their favourite records of the year. Next up in the series, we hear from the wonderful Micah from Boniface.

We <3 Boniface. Keeping Up is such a great track and has made us even more excited to hear more from the band in 2020. They're playing live at Omeara in Spring and we CAN NOT WAIT.

Check out the list of albums below and let us know what you think of the choices...

Top 10 of 2019 (in no particular order)

Lana Del Rey - Normal Fucking Rockwell
Have loved Lana Del Rey from the first singles and it’s so inspiring to hear her perfecting what she does like this. NFR is witty and beautiful and heartbreaking and has been constantly on repeat for me.

Blaenavon - Everything That Makes You Happy
I am biased for this one obviously but damn this record is good. I listened to it for the first time on a long drive late at night and it just about broke my heart. “I Want You” is one of the most beautiful album openers I’ve ever heard. I also love a good chorus and there are many to be found here.

White Lies - FIVE V2
Again, biased since White Lies has been so kind to me and given us the chance to play for literally tens of thousands of people, but the record is seriously brilliant. Pop music with intimacy - a good dose of 80s homage but some ruthlessly energetic rock stuff as well. I love it.

Chromatics - Closer to Grey
Chromatics. I love that shit. Chromatics is the reason I got into synthesizers. I’ve been waiting for a new record for years and this didn’t let me down.

Solange - When I Get Home
This is one of those records that literally expands my brain. Everything I think I know about songwriting just goes out the window and I realize how truly creative you can get while still making something fun to listen to. Big fan.

Begonia - Fear
I have loved Begonia since hearing her first single “Juniper” at a little festival in rural Manitoba and I have been so thrilled to hear her music evolve since then. “Fear” is brilliant and fun and I’m so happy it exists.

Tunic - Complexion
Aggressive and spiteful and scary and emotional. I listen to this when I need to walk somewhere quickly. Just an amazing hardcore band from Winnipeg that is fucking it up and touring relentlessly. I love it.

FKA Twigs - Magdalene
At time of writing this, Magdalene just came out so I still need time to process but goddamn. This record is so incredible. Original and intimate and absolutely beautiful. So inspiring to listen to.

Billie Eilish - When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
One of the biggest records of the year but come on… It’s undeniably great. I absolutely love Billie’s approach to songwriting, love the songs, the production, the visuals. So self assured and fresh. Very nice.

Foals - Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost Part 2
After seeing Foals at the Banquet Records release show I knew this would be going on my top 10. Foals are such an amazing live band and the songs work just as well on an LP. An absurdly energetic live show and a beautiful record.
