VISIONS SPOTLIGHT #5: Mykki Blanco
01 Aug 2016
With Visions festival fast approaching, we turn the spotlight on some of the acts gracing its stages
There's less than a week to go until Visions Festival 2016 takes a hold of Hackney and fills it to the brim with a gloriously diverse platter of live music for your delectation.
To get you in the mood, we're turning the spotlight on one artist a day until we open up the gates - and don't forget to get your advance tickets from visionsfestival.com. See you on Saturday August 6th!
WHO: Mykki Blanco - boundary-pushing Orange County rapper and former industrial punk upstart.
WHERE: Oval Space, 6.45pm
CREDENTIALS: Championed by riot grrl lynchpin Kathleen Hanna, Mykki's fans aren't just musicians, they're pioneers. She's also worked with Cakes Da Killa and Basement Jaxx, just to add a little more sonic diversity to the mix.
WHAT THEY SAY: "Who gives a fuck [about being mainstream]? I'm not trying to be in the 40/40 Club popping bottles while rappers throw hundred-dollar bills on strippers. I'm just out to make my audience happy, fulfill my creative vision, and be successful on my own terms." (Interview Magazine, 2012)
WHY PICK THEM? Since her emergence in 2012, Mykki has stood alone in the rap game. As much an activist and writer as she is a rapper, Blanco is an artist in as real a sense as they come - someone committed to fully embodying their vision, unafraid to put themselves out there in the pursuit of personal and creative fulfillment.
FOR FANS OF: Bikini Kill, Zebra Katz
TRY THIS: Breakthrough hit 'Wavvy' still remains one of her biggest crowd-pleasers.
