The Procession - Musique Magnifique (Nude)

2/5

By: Jo-Rosie Haffenden

The Procession - Musique MagnifiqueThe American contingent of The Procession is J. Paul Zawacki and John Schreffler. Born and raised in Michigan, the two first met in an eighth grade where I believe they returned, mentally if not physically, to write 'Musique Magnifique'. The intensely theatrical litter of ten bouncy pop tunes is good-looking, clean cut, but a little dim-witted.

Overtly influenced by The Beetles and The Beach Boys this over simplistic, bubbly music is actually quite infectious. Despite the diluted indie-ness and annoying histrionic marching drums, it's harmless and, if you're a young'un, actually likeable.

'Don't you wish there was a multi-purpose drug you could take to cure your problems then you could do the things you want to do so you could leave the bottom...la la la la la la la la la la...'... that's about as deep as The Procession go, though I think a more pressing problem is that there's another band, namely The Format, who are already an updated, smarter, younger and better looking take on the same blueprint.

The Procession have with 'Musique Magnifique' created the soundtrack to a circus of jocks and cheerleaders, where excitable and playful harmonies join cutesy lyrics and basic chord structures. It's over the top, amusing, and I hope, but unfortunately doubt, satirical. But it's certainly likeable, definitely cheeky, though sadly both musically obtuse, and a little obvious.
