Voxtrot - Voxtrot (Playlouder)

3/5

By: Jo-Rosie Haffenden

Voxtrot - VoxtrotThe first time I heard Voxtrot, I was anxious. They've supported many of my personal 'greats' (The Shins, Tapes n Tapes, Beirut, iLIKETRAINS, White Rose Movement and The Spinto Band but to name a few) and I was apprehensive as to whether they would meet the high standard of charm usually found in the music they've associated themselves with.

The second time I listened - always the killer - I actually really quite liked it. Voxtrot are a 5 piece and considering this their sound is unusually over simplistic, understated and in no way self indulgent (like so many other bloated line ups).

The romantic, folksy lyrics ('you love me just like a stranger, you love me just like myself') are driven by a slightly pushy, decidedly insistent set of rhythms. The shaky vocals don't carry much weight and at times may be considered slightly empty; however the uplifting, soothing piano counteracts that masterfully. It's an album with eleven simple, hopeful, gentle tunes that don't grab your attention, but repeatedly nag you to listen to them, and eventually succeed.

Like a light-hearted romantic comedy, the eponymous LP is irritatingly enjoyable, heartfelt, at times lonely, but never truly desperate. It is an optimistic, soulful and honest bouncy album, but though it's one you learn to lust after, it's also one you could never truly love.
